ments. Altrese Hawkins was named to Conference USA’s All-First Team in addition to being a second-team performer in COBRA Magazine’s 2010 postseason awards. Senior Christine Bach accompanied Hawkins on the C-USA All-Academic Team (the second-straight selection for Hawkins and fourth-straight for Bach), while the Tigers earned AVCA’s Academic Team Award for the eighth consecutive season. Bach was also named to ESPN’s All-Academic District IV First Team, while Hawkins earned AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors. Like a Hawk Altrese Hawkins continues to rake in the honors, as the redshirt-junior was named to Conference USA’s All-Preseason team. The selection comes after her selection to C-USA’s All-Conference First Team following the completion of the 2010 season. Hawkins also earned All-Freshman honors after her first season in 2009. Hawkins was selected to COBRA Magazine’s All-Preseason First Team. She earns the award after a stellar sophomore season in which she downed 483 kills and held a team-best hitting percentage of .305. She was one of only two Tigers to compete in all 122 sets during the 2010 campaign, highlighted by a 29-kill performance against Southern Miss on Oct. 29. The 29-kill showing ranks eighth in the Memphis record book for the most kills in a single match. Hawkins lived up to the hype, as she was named the Memphis Invitational’s MVP and also tabbed C-USA’s Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Aug. 29. 800-win Milestone The University of Memphis Volleyball program, entering its 40th year in 2011, collected its 800th program victory with a 3-1 victory over SEMO on August 26. The Tigers currently rank 28th on the all-time NCAA Volleyball wins list, just one game behind George Washington. Fab 50 After starting 2011 with five wins in seven games, head coach April Jauregui is just five victories away from reaching the 50 win plateau. This is Your Captain Speaking Altrese Hawkins and Hajnalka Molnar have been anointed the 2011 captains for Tiger Volleyball. Each returns after standout campaigns in 2011. Hawkins was named a member of the 2011 C-USA All-Preseason Team in addition to being tabbed a First Team performer by COBRA Magazine. The junior downed 483 kills and had a team-best .305 hitting percentage in 2010. Fresh Faces The Tigers welcome Lauren Hawkins (Rowlett, Texas), Alexis Wesley (Silverdale, Wash.) and Veronica Zimmerman (Toledo, Ohio) to the program this season. Juniors Rule With no seniors of the 2011 roster, the Tigers will rely heavily on their talented junior class of Altrese Hawkins, Cassidy Hawkins, Vesna Jelic, Marija Jovanovic, Maja Kostic, and Hajnalka Molnar, which includes five starters from last year’s squad.

Tigers Sweep Providence in Opening Match of USF Powerade/Asics Challenge

Tigers Fall 3-1 to Columbia in USF Asics/Powerade Challenge SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of Memphis volleyball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 3-1 (28-30;25-19;17-25;22-25) to Columbia on day two of the USF Asics/Powerade Challenge.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of Memphis volleyball team defeated Providence in straight sets (25-18;25-19; 25-17) to win its opening match in the USF Asics/Powerade Challenge. Altrese Hawkins and Marija Jovanovic each had 11 kills to lead the Tigers.

Memphis fell behind early in the first set, trailing 12-8 before battling back to take the lead 19-18 on a kill from Altrese Hawkins. Columbia rallied, however, to take a 24-23 lead, but Memphis was able to stave off the set point and force the set to continue. The Lions proved too much however, rallying to win two consecutive points and taking the set 30-28.

In its first match on the road this season, Memphis traded points with Providence in the first set before taking the lead for good when a service ace from Vesna Jelic made it 13-12. The Tigers then pushed the lead to 19-13 behind a flurry of setting errors on the Friars. Kills from A. Hawkins and Jovanovic extended the lead to 23-15 before an attack error by the Friars sealed the first set, 25-8.

The Tigers rebounded in the second set behind the strong play of Hawkins, who finished with a season-high 27 kills. Despite hitting .500 in the second set, Columbia couldn’t handle the Tiger attack as Memphis closed the set out 25-19.

The Tigers jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the second set behind two kills from Jovanovic and Jelic. Memphis extened the lead to 12-6 on a kill from Katie Meyer before two-straight points from the Friars cut it to 12-8. Memphis opened its largest advantage of the set after blocks from A. Hawkins and Jelic made it 18-9. Memphis clinched the set on a kill from Katie Meyer.

The Lions came out firing in the third set, going up 10-5 early and extending the lead to 14-7. Memphis battled back to within five when a service ace from Aleksandra Petronijevic narrowed the deficit to 19-15. Columbia would then call a timeout and regroup, however and finish out the set with a 25-17 win. Columbia started the fourth set hitting a perfect 1.000 for the first 14 points and opened up a 10-4 lead. The Lions then pushed the lead to 17-11 before threestraight kills from A. Hawkins narrowed the gap to 17-14. The Lions then went on a 6-3 run to extend the lead to 23-17, but Memphis refused to go away easily. The Tigers scored four consecutive points before a service error from Vesna Jelic gave the Lions a 24-20 advantage.

A. Hawkins and Jovanovic each started the third set off with two kills to give Memphis an early 5-2 advantage. Memphis extended the lead to 14-7 on back-toback kills from freshman Lauren Hawkins and went up by as many as 10 points (22-12) after a kill from Cassidy Hawkins. Consecutive attack errors and a kill from Jovana Barisic clinched the set and the match for the Tigers.

Hawkins downed two more kills to bring her total to 27 and narrow the gap to 24-22 before Columbia used a final slide attack to seal the set, 25-22 and the match, 3-1.

A. Hawkins and Jovanovic each finished with 11 kills to lead the Tigers, who improve to 5-0 on the season. Freshman Lauren Hawkins and sophomore Katie Meyer each set season-highs in hitting percentage, as the duo combined to hit 10-of-14 and hold a .714 hitting percentage. L. Hawkins had three total blocks to lead Memphis. Hajnalka Molnar, who played every point in the match, recorded 34 assists for the Tigers and also had five digs. Aleksandra Petronijevic anchored the back line for Memphis by recording 11 digs in addition to chipping in four assists. Jelic finished with six kills, eight digs, and two service aces.
