UNIVERSITY OF MEMPHIS
FIRST WIN OVER RANKED OPPONENT Memphis brings a two-game winning streak in to Saturday’s match-up with Houston after upsetting No. 23 Rutgers, 74-73, in overtime in the Fieldhouse on Tuesday night. That win was the first over a ranked team for Memphis since a 64-58 win over No. 20 DePaul on Jan. 26, 2003 (also a conference game). The win improved Memphis to 2-0 all-time against teams ranked No. 23 in the country and was the program’s 19th win over a ranked opponent in 93 tries. Memphis is looking for a third conference win with a road trip looming next week at No. 1 Connecticut and at No. 5 Louisville. OVERTIME? SURE, WHY NOT? The Tigers have played 17 games this year, but have played almost 18 games worth of minutes. Memphis has played five overtime games already this season, including two double-overtime games. The Tigers are 1-1 in double overtime (both road games) and are 2-1 in overtime games with just one extra session (2-0 at home and 0-1 on the road). Memphis is now 13-12 in overtime games in school history and is 7-3 in overtime under Melissa McFerrin. ANOTHER FIRST FOR THE SEASON Tuesday’s win over Rutgers was the first time this season the Tigers trailed at the half and came back for the victory. At one point, Memphis trailed by 11 points in the first half. That’s the biggest margin of deficit erased by Memphis this season. The previous best was 10 in the first game of the season against East Tennessee State. Memphis is 1-6 when trailing at the half this season. ABOUT HOUSTON Houston has been a difficult opponent for the Tigers as of late. This is the 25th meeting between the two teams and the overall series is tied at 12, but the Cougars have won nine of the last 10 meetings between the two teams. Houston won the meeting against the Tigers last year in Houston, 77-74. Then-freshman Ariel Hearn launched a three with five seconds left in the game, but it bounced off the iron and the Tigers were not able to get a second shot off in time before the Cougars got the win. Houston is also dangerous as the team is trying to get interim head coach Wade Scott his first NCAA Division I coaching victory. Scott was elevated from the associate head coach spot to the interim head coach spot when former coach Todd Buchanan resigned followed the non-conference schedule. Scott was the head coach at two different junior colleges (Grayson and Clarndon) and also served as a men’s head coach at Western Oklahoma State College. Houston is also searching for a point guard to replace the program’s all-time assist leader, as Porsche Landry graduated following last season. Transfer guard Demetria Foreman may be the answer for the Cougars, as she leads the team with 39 assists on the season. ANOTHER DOUBLE DIGIT DAY FOR HEARN Ariel Hearn finished the Rutgers game with 18 points, her 15th double-digit scoring outing of the 17 game season. In her 49 game old Memphis career, Hearn has scored double digits 39 times. Hearn has posted 20+ point games eight times already this season and now has 12 20+ point games for her young Tiger career. REWARD FOR TAKING CARE OF THE BALL In games where Memphis scores more points off turnovers than the opponents, they are now 7-3. In games where the opponents take more Tiger turnovers the other way for buckets, Memphis is 2-5. Against Rutgers, Memphis had just nine turnovers, while forcing 24 Scarlet Knights turnovers. That was the second time this season that Memphis has had
single-digit turnovers in a game. FUQUA-BEY HITS GAME-WINNING FREETHROWS VS RUTGERS Asia Fuqua-Bey was 0-for-2 from the free-throw line against Rutgers when she was sent to the line in overtime with a pair of free-throws in the double bonus. Her first make tied the game at 73 and her second gave Memphis the one point advantage that held up as the clock wound down. The two makes as the game wound down got Fuqua-Bey to 10 points, giving her double-digit points for the first time in six games for the Tigers. She finished with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. HEARN EYING CAREER RECORD BOOK Ariel Hearn is 10 three-point field goals shy of breaking in to the single season top 10 in three-point field goals made with 42 made triples this season. She needs 52 to catch Jessica Hall’s mark from the 2007-08 season. For her career, Hearn is 31 threes shy of 100 as a Tiger. In school history, only eight other players have knocked down 100 or more threes in a career. ROWSER LOOKING FOR 200TH POINT Redshirt freshman guard Mooriah Rowser is 18 points shy of her 200th career point. Rowser is working her way back from a knee injury that cost her all but two games last season. Ten minutes in to Memphis’ third game of the year last season, Rowser suffered a knee injury in a road win at Illinois State in the WNIT. She underwent surgery and has worked her way back to the lineup for Memphis and is looking to regain her mid-range game that helped her score 24 points in her first college game last year. Fellow freshman Taylor Williams is just 15 points shy of her 100th career point heading in to her 18th collegiate game. HOPE PUTS UP DOUBLE DIGITS FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT NIGHT Senior post Pa’Sonna Hope had a tough shooting night from the field in the opening half of the Rutgers game, but stayed strong at the free-throw line, hitting 6-for-8 and finishing with 16 points for her fourth straight double-digit socring night of the season. Hope has scored double-digits in all four conference games this season and it is the first time in her Tiger career that she has scored double digit points in four straight games. The Cleveland native now has nine double-digit scoring games this season after hitting 10 or more points just five times last year. TWO POST DOUBLE-DOUBLE IN WIN OVER RUTGERS Memphis had two players put up a double-double in the win over No. 23 Rutgers Tuesday night. Pa’Sonna Hope had 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Fuqua-Bey finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds. That was the fifth double-double of the season and the sixth of her career for Hope. It was the second of the season and the third of her career for Fuqua-Bey. FIRST CONFERENCE WIN The Tigers got their first-ever American Athletic Conference win last Saturday at UCF. Memphis had four players in double digits in the win, led by 24 points from sophomore guard Ariel Hearn. Freshman Breigha Wilder-Cochran was knocking on the door of a triple double, finishing with 16 points, eight rebounds and nine assists, all career-highs. WILDER-COCHRAN LOOKING FOR HEARN’S FRESHMAN ASSIST MARK Through the first 17 games of the season, freshman point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran leads Memphis with 82 assists. Wilder-Cochran averages 4.8 assists per game. She needs 18 more assists to become just the third freshman in school history to dish out 100 or more assists. The first Memphis freshman to reach that feat was

HEAD COACH MELISSA McFERRIN
Melissa McFerrin 6th Season at Memphis At Memphis: 104-76 (.578) Career: 154-146 (.513)
McFERRIN’S RECORD BY OPPONENT
Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basketball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s modern history. McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors. Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minnesota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player
Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten championship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationallyranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.

Ruth Ann-Forsythe, who finished with 101 assists in the 1983-84 season. The second was Ariel Hearn, last season. Hearn finished with a freshman single season record 109 assists in her first collegiate season. One of the best free-throw shooters on the team, Wilder-Cochran has gone 17-for-20 from the freethrow line in the last two games, both Tiger victories. SWAIN BRINGING SPARK OFF BENCH Jasbrielle Swain came to the Tigers as a walk-on after moving home to Memphis after three seasons at Binghamton University, where she was named to the All-Defensive team. Against Rutgers, Swain was 2-for-2 from the field and 1-for-2 from the free-throw line. She also made initial contact on the ball as Rutgers was driving down the lane down one with the clock winding down. The ball eventually squirted loose to Asia Fuqua-Bey, who pushed it to Ariel Hearn, who had possession of it when the clock wound down on Memphis’ win over No. 23 Rutgers.

WILDER-COCHRAN POSTS CAREER NIGHT AT UCF Freshman point guard Breigha Wilder-Cochran had a career-night in the win at UCF Saturday. The freshman almost put a triple-double in the books, finishing with career highs in points (16), rebounds (8) and assists (9). In conference contests, Wilder-Cochran leads the league with 5.3 assists a game and ranks fifth with 2.5 steals a night. She has also moved in to the top 25 in scoring with 9.8 ppg and her 73.3 percent free-throw stroke ranks 10th in conference games. The freshman has also found some comfort in shooting from beyond the arc, knocking down four three-point field goals in the last three games and shooting 4-for-7 from beyond the arc in the last three games.

Powell also added five rebounds and a steal in a career-high 22 minutes. Powell also saw a bunch of playing time at UCF, finishing 2-for-3 from the field and grabbing seven rebounds. WINNING CLOSE GAMES Head Coach Melissa McFerrin has been telling her young team that Memphis wins close games. Already this season, Memphis has played five overtime games (with a 3-2 record) and has played three one-point decisions (with a 2-1 mark). In Coach McFerrin’s six seasons at Memphis, the Tigers are 34-13 in games decided by five or fewer points. TIGER BENCH GETS INTO ACTION With a short roster of just 11 players, foul trouble or injuries mean that the coaching staff has to do some lineup juggling. Against UCF, the Tigers had three players with two fouls at the end of the first half and had to again adjust the lineup to cover foul trouble. But by the end of the game, all 11 players had gotten in on the game action, including freshman post Brandi Goodman, who is battling a back injury that cost her the entire preseason, and sophomore guard Jaymie Jackson, who returned to the Tiger lineup after missing games for a violation of team rules.
WALK-ON AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP Senior Jasbrielle Swain joined the Tigers as a walkon after school began. She spent the last three seasons at Binghamton University, earning America East All-Defensive Team honors after starting in 29 of 30 games as a junior. Swain was granted a waiver by the NCAA to play for the Tigers right before the team’s game against Wright State. She made a bang in her debut, pulling down 16 rebounds in the win at Wright State. The Tigers then surprised Swain before the game at UALR, putting her on scholarship for her final collegiate season.
HEARN LOOKING FOR CAREER POINT 800 Through 49 career games, sophomore guard Ariel Hearn has been a consistent scorer. She is averaging 15.6 ppg for her career (18.9 ppg this year). She comes in to the Houston game with 763 career points, 37 shy of the 800-point mark and 237 shy of the 1,000 point mark. With 13 regular season conference games left and at least one guaranteed conference tournament game, Hearn would need to average 16.9 ppg over the rest of the season to hit the 1,000 point mark this year. That would make her the first Tiger to hit the 1,000 point mark in two seasons since Brittany Carter did it after transferring to Memphis from Georgia in her 60th career game.
ROWSER NAMED AMERICAN’S ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Redshirt freshman guard Mooriah Rowser was named the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday after hitting the game-winning layup in the 78-76 double overtime road win at Tennessee Tech. That was Rowser’s second league Rookie of the Week honor. She earned the league’s first-ever Rookie of the Week award in the Tigers’ regular-season overtime win against East Tennessee State in week one.
