On Deck The Tigers close a 10-game homestand when Arkansas State visits FedExPark on Tuesday for a 6:30 p.m. matchup. The U of M will travel to Arkansas State on Wednesday before traveling to UAB for a road series with UAB next weekend. Alumni Weekend Tiger Baseball welcomes all former alumni to FedExPark for Alumni Weekend. It will be a busy weekend at FedExPark as the University of Memphis baseball program will retire two jerseys this weekend with Phil Clark’s jersey being retired on Saturday and the late Al Brown having a jersey placed on the right field wall on Sunday. Tom III, the official U of M mascot, will be at Friday’s game. Saturday will be Clark retirement and the 2011 squad will be signing autographs at the end of the game. Sunday is Stan Bronson day at the ballpark. As the “most durable bat boy in baseball” normally does, Bronson will stand before the crowd in the eighth inning. Sunday will also be the retirement of Brown’s jersey and the 2011 squad will host a postgame clinic.

The Series With Southern Miss Memphis trails the all-time series 41-52 after the Golden Eagles took three of the four games played in 2010. Southern Miss capped off the 2010 regular season for the Tigers, taking two of three at Pete Taylor Park. The two clubs faced off on the first day of play at the Conference USA Tournament last season with Southern Miss winning that game 8-2. In the last series here in the Bluff City, Memphis took two of three from the Golden Eagles at USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn. That series victory was Memphis’s lone C-USA win of the year and set Southern Miss off on a College World Series run. The Tigers have won three of the last five series against USM. The Tigers’ 40 wins against the Golden Eagles are the most against a C-USA opponent. Zurcher Leads Nation In Hitting With his .521 batting average, shortstop Chad Zurcher leads the nation. When the NCAA released the updated stats on March 29, Zurcher was hitting .480 on the season. With the pressure of being the nation’s leading hitter, Zurcher is 11-for-18 (.611) with two doubles, four RBI and eight runs scored. Zurcher has been walked twice and hit by a pitch four times in that same span. Zurcher had a 15-game hit streak ended on April 2, but Zurcher reached base three times in that game and scored all three times. Zurcher has two or more hits in 18 of the 27 games he has played in and has posted four or more hits in a game twice this season. Of his 50 hits, 12 are extra-base hits (10 2B, 2 3B). As a freshman, Zurcher hit .267 and had 51 hits in 53 games played. Last season, Zurcher hit .400 and collected 93 hits.

On-Base Machine As the nation’s leading hitter with a .505 batting average, you would expect that Chad Zurcher would be on base a lot. With 16 walks, Zurcher not only hits to find his way on base, but he also leads the nation in on-base percentage. Zurcher sports a .624 on-base percentage. When the NCAA released the national leaders on March 29, Zurcher had a .588 on-base percentage. Zurcher has reached base two or more times in 24 of the 27 games he has played in. Zurcher has been hit by a pitch 12 times this season. If Zurcher doesn’t get on base, he will put the ball in play as he sports a .667 slugging percentage, third in C-USA. Zurcher has struck out just three times this season, the sixth-toughest batter to strike out in the nation. A Closer Look At Southern Miss Southern Miss travels to FedExPark on a bit of a hot streak. The Golden Eagles have climbed as high as 14th in the national polls and No. 2 in the RPI. Although the Golden Eagles dropped their last matchup, 5-4 vs. Mississippi State, they have won seven of their last nine games to improve to 22-6 on the season. USM is 7-3 away from Pete Taylor Park and sports a perfect 3-0 record in Conference USA road games after a sweep at UCF last weekend. At the plate, Mark Bourgeois leads the club with a .398 average. Bourgeois is second in C-USA in hitting behind Chad Zurcher (.521). B.A. Vollmuth leads the Golden Eagles with nine home runs on the year and his 29 RBI also leads the club. Tyler Koeling, who hits .385, is first in C-USA with just two strikeouts this season. Overall, seven players are hitting over .300 and as a team, the Golden Eagles hit .313. On the mound, starter Todd McInnis (2.70), Geoffrey Thomas (1.48) and Jonathan Thompson (5.23) lead the USM pitching staff to a team ERA of 3.27. McInnis leads the team with 43 strikeouts. Closer Collin Cargill has a 1.61 ERA in 22.1 innings pitched and has recorded four saves on the year. On The Clock With the new bats this year in college baseball, one trend to follow this season is length of game. Memphis averages a game duration of 2:35 this season. Game times averaged 3:01 at this point last season. Memphis has played five games lasting over three hours and the shortest nine-inning game has been played in 2:06 at East Carolina on March 25. The longest game was played on March 23 against Arkansas in 3:25. Seven of the Tigers last 10 games have been played in 2:30 or less. Please note that FedExPark is to be written as one word. FedExPark is not FedEx Park, Fed Ex Park, Fedexpark, Fed ex park or any other combination

2011 MEMPHIS BASEBALL

Memphis Southern Miss

000 000 002 - 2 6 0 000 602 00X - 8 8 1

Four Golden Eagle batters hit home runs and starter Scott Copeland struck out five in 8.0 shutout innings as Southern Miss defeated Memphis, 8-2, in game one of the 2010 Conference USA Baseball Championship Wednesday afternoon at the University of Houston’s Cougar Field. Following three scoreless frames, the Golden Eagles hit three homers in part of a six-run fourth and added two more runs in the sixth courtesy of another bomb as seven of USM’s eight runs came via the long ball. With the win, Southern Miss won for the 15th time in its last 19 games to improve to 33-21 on the year. Memphis, meanwhile, fell to 27-29. Centerfielder Dillon Day got things going for Southern Miss in the fourth when he reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced 180 feet via a stolen base and wild pitch, and came around to score on an RBIdouble off the bat of third baseman Joey Archer. From there, Travis Graves hammered a two-run homer to left and right fielder Tyler Koelling sent the very next pitch over the wall just right of center to make it 4-0. Memphis starter Ryan Fraser got a fly ball to right for the second out of the stanza, but USM shortstop B.A. Vollmuth followed with a two-run bomb to cap the six-run stanza. Vollmuth’s round-tripper was his eighth in the last eight games and ended Fraser’s day. Marc Ashley came out of the bullpen to get out of the inning without and further damage done and followed that with a scoreless fifth. An inning later, however, Southern Miss designated hitter Adam Doleac left the ballpark deep to right on a 2-2 offering to plate Mark Ellis to account for the Golden Eagles’ final tally. Memphis avoided the shutout with a pair of runs in the top of the ninth courtesy of an RBI-groundout to second by Adam McClain and a run-scoring single to right by Shawn Ablett off Southern Miss reliever Paxton King. Fraser was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three in 3.2 innings.

Timely Hitting When looking closer at the time of games, Memphis has needed some timely hitting. The Tigers have come through this season with two outs as the offense has produced 82, two-out RBI this season. The U of M had 77, two-out RBI at this point last season and was batting .298 (93-312) with two outs. The Tigers have a .323 (101-313) average with two outs this year. After a 10 game stretch saw the Tigers hit just .250 with 18, twoout RBI, Memphis has gotten back on track hitting .373 (25-67) with two outs and the Tigers have 26 two-out RBI in the last six games. Memphis has 17 home runs this season and nine have come with two outs in an inning. Jacob Wilson leads the Tigers with 13, two-out RBI on the season. Chad Zurcher has 12 two-out RBI and T.J. Rich has 11, two-out RBI. Needing a key hit with runners in scoring position was a struggle for the Tigers over a seven game stretch, including games at East Carolina. In that stretch, the Tigers had just 14 hits in 58 plate appearances (.241) with runners in scoring position. In the last six games, the U of M is 113-of-340 (.332) with runners in scoring position. Off To A Good Start Memphis scored six runs in the second inning against Ole Miss on Tuesday and ended up with a 9-2 victory over the regional rival. Just in the last six games, the Tigers have pounced on opponents early, producing 29 runs in the first three innings. The lone game in the last six that Memphis didn’t score in the first three innings was the 3-2 seven-inning loss to Mississippi Valley State. On the season, Memphis has scored 88 runs in the first three innings and when the Tigers score first, the U of M is 12-4. On the mound, Memphis has limited its opponents to just 26 runs in the first three innings. New Bats Catching Up To Tigers?? Although college baseball switched to the new BBCOR bats, the Memphis offense got off to a hot start at the plate, but the Tiger offense has sense been held in check when compared to last season’s numbers. After averaging more than five hits per game higher, Memphis has 22 (297) fewer hits than it did at this point last season (319). The Tigers are minus five with 17 home runs compared the 2010 squad that had 22 at this point last season. The Tigers have scored double-digit runs in 10 games and pounded out double-digit hits in 16 games. The Tigers have cut down on the strikeouts with 54 fewer strikeouts than a season ago and the U of M has walked 27 more times than the 2010 club after 27 games.

2011 BASEBALL GAME NOTES

2011 MEMPHIS BASEBALL BY THE NUMBERS Earned runs allowed by junior pitcher Ben Paullus in 19 2/3 innings pitched on the season.

2 4 12 14 54 82 450

Eli Hynes has hit a home run in four-straight games. Quality starts by the Tiger pitching staff this season. The Tigers have picked off 14 runners this season, first among C-USA clubs. Memphis has scored 54 runs in the last four games The Tigers have 82 two-out RBI this season. Head Coach Daron Schoenrock is coaching his 450th career game as a head coach on Friday. Chad Zurcher leads the nation with a batting average of .521.

.521 1,609 1,755

Memphis Baseball has claimed 1,609 wins all-time. Tiger Baseball raised $1,755 during “Mustache March” All donations were given to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Memphis.

2,834

Since 1913, Memphis has played 2,834 games.

Top-10 Chase Chad Zurcher continues to climb the charts for hits in a career as he moved to sixth with 212 career hits. Zurcher has some work to do to climb to the top five, needing 18 hits to tie for fifth. Drew Martinez, Adam McClain, Jacob Wilson and Chad Zurcher are quickly approaching top10 marks as well. With 195 career hits, Martinez needs just two base hits to tie for eighth.

Home Cookin’ The Tigers continue a 10-game homestand this weekend and the friendly confines of FedExPark have been generous to the Tigers. Memphis has played very well at home this season, sporting a 14-5 record. The U of M is 29-14 at FedExPark and has won 19 of the last 22 games at the renovated ballpark. In head coach Daron Schoenrocks’ tenure, the Tigers are 76-75 at home.

“Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head” As the B.J. Thomas lyric goes, rain drops keep falling on Tiger Baseball. Memphis has already had two rain outs this season. The rain out with Oral Roberts on March 4 will be made up as Arkansas-Pine Bluff will visit FedExPark for a 6:30 p.m. game on May 10. The rained out game with Auburn on March 9 will not be made up, but head coach Daron Schoenrock added a game with Mississippi Valley State on March 30 to make up the rain out. Memphis will now play a doubleheader with MVSU. The Tigers schedule was changed once again with anticipated rainfall in the Greenville, N.C. area as the Tigers played a doubleheader against East Carolina on March 26.

In Like A Lamb, Out Like A Lion As the saying normally states, March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, but for Tiger Baseball it has had the opposite effect. After a 5-2 record in February, the U of M was 8-9 in March. April should be good for the Tigers as they will play 15 of the scheduled 20 games on the monthly calendar in the Bluff City. The Tiger bats were warm in February as the Tigers hit .354 on the month, but the bats cooled off in March with the Tigers carrying a .280 average. So far in April, the Tigers are hitting .390 as a club. Memphis had just three errors in February, but March saw the Tigers defense collect 17 errors. Under head coach Daron Schoenrock, the U of M is 51-63 in the month of April with the best record coming in the 2007 season at 12-5.

Tigers Capture Program Victory No. 1600 With the recent research gathered by Memphis stat historian John Guniozzo, the Tiger baseball program claimed win No. 1600 all-time on March 12 in game two of the doubleheader against Saint Peter’s. After fi elding a team for the fi rst time in 1913, Memphis has a record of 16091210-16 all-time. Caught Napping Senior southpaw Ryan Holland leads Conference USA with seven pick-offs this season. Holland has picked off two base runners in two of his outings (Kennesaw State and Saint Peter’s) and added another against Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Illinois and Alcorn State. As a pitching staff, Memphis leads C-USA with 14 pick offs.

Fantastic Four The U of M pitching staff sports a 3.82 ERA this season and when the Tigers score four or more runs, Memphis is 16-0 and when scoring less than four Memphis is 1-11. The Tigers pitching staff had plenty of run support last weekend as Memphis posted 45 runs in the three-game sweep of Alcorn State. The 45 runs scored by the Tigers in the three-game set were the most since the 1994 squad scored 59 runs against Dayton. Memphis has scored 188 runs this season and 44 percent (83-188) have come in the two series the Tigers scored 35 or more runs (Evansville and Alcorn State).

2011 BASEBALL GAME NOTES

2011 MEMPHIS BASEBALL daron schoenrock Head Coach  7th Year 164-208, 189-260

The 16th baseball coach in school history, Daron Schoenrock enters his seventh season at the controls of the Memphis baseball program armed with his most experienced Tiger club yet. One of the top head coaches in the business, Schoenrock led his 2010 team to the program’s best-ever finish in Conference USA history and is poised to make a run at a second NCAA Tournament appearance in 2011. Evident in his “Total Person” approach to coaching, Schoenrock’s Tigers placed four Tigers on C-USA’s All-Conference squad and a league-best four players on the league’s All-Academic Team. With Schoenrock at the helm of the Memphis program the Tigers were able to end the 13-year postseason hiatus and earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2007. The 2007 squad went 36-27, marking the most wins since 1994. Since coming to Memphis, Schoenrock has brought in three nationally-ranked recruiting classes, while seven Tigers have been drafted in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Eight players have gone on to play professional baseball either through the draft or free agency.

Get The Lead-Off Man On Base Numbers support the notion that getting a leadoff batter on base increases the likelihood of scoring runs in an inning. That has certainly been the case for the Tigers in 2011. Memphis has put its leadoff batter on base 44 percent (103-286) of the time and when the leadoff man reaches base, Memphis has scored 48 runs. In the three game set with Alcorn State, the leadoff man reached 13 times and scored 11 times. Tiger leadoff man Drew Martinez has reached base in 22 of his 45 (.489) plate appearances as a leadoff hitter. Chad Zurcher sports a 17-for-24 (.708) mark as a lead-off man. “Let’s Get Some Runs” As the former Chicago Cubs announcer Harry Caray would say during the seventh inning stretch at Wrigley Field, the Tigers are in need of some runs following the seventh inning stretch. Of the 197 runs scored this season, the U of M has scored 22 after the seventh inning. When leading after seven innings, Memphis is 17-1 and when the game is tied or the Tigers trail, Memphis is 0-9 this season. Getting Off The Schneid When looking closer at Memphis’ recent struggles scoring runs, the lack of hitting when runners are in scoring position is where the struggles begin. In the C-USA opening series at East Carolina, the Tigers were 5-of-24 (.208) with runners in scoring position. On the season, the U of M is hitting .326 (108-331). The Tigers hit .451 (23-51) in the three-game sweep of Alcorn State.

Milestone Victory Now in his seventh year at the helm of the Memphis baseball program, head coach Daron Schoenrock claimed his milestone 150th win as the Tigers’ skipper on Feb. 20th against Evansville. Schoenrock passed the late Al Brown at No. 3 on Memphis’s all-time coaching wins ledger with his 157th career victory on March 15 against UT Martin. Schoenrock needs only 12 more wins to reach a 200th career victory. Walking In Memphis Memphis has taken 122 walks this season and took the free base 33 times in the first six games. Jacob Wilson and Chad Zurcher have each tied a single-game record with four walks in a game this season. T.J. Rich leads the club with 17 walks and Chad Zurcher is second on the squad with 16. Three other Tigers have taken the free base 10 or more times. Rung Up Tiger hurler Dan Langfield struck out 16 batters at Kennesaw State on Feb. 25. His 16 strikeouts were the second-most in school history and CUSA single-game history. On the season, Langfield leads the Tiger pitching staff with 44 strikeouts which ranks third among C-USA pitchers. Moll-ing Them Down Freshman southpaw Sam Moll has been mowing down opposing hitters in his first season in the Blue and Gray. After four appearances in the bullpen, Moll has made three-straight starts in midweek games for the Tigers. In those starts, Moll has 25 strikeouts in 19.2 innings pitched. Moll posted seven scoreless innings and earned his second victory on the mound in the 9-2 victory over Ole Miss on April 5. On the season, Moll has fanned 34 batters and he sports a 2.25 ERA.

What A Difference A Year Makes Comparing stats from this season to last shows some improvement in some key areas for the Tigers this season. Most notably, the Tigers have a .978 fielding percentage this season compared to .956 this time a year ago. With 23 errors this season, Memphis has improved its error total from 47 a season ago and allowed just 13 unearned runs compared to 43 this time a year ago. On the mound, the U of M has shaved off nearly two runs per game off its ERA with a 3.75 team ERA compared to 5.67 this time last season. After getting off to a hot start at the plate, the Tigers have nearly identical numbers as last season with a .316 batting average. The largest statistical difference with the 2011 club compared to the 2010 squad is the run differential. The 2010 squad was equal at 188 runs after 28 games and this year’s club is plus 83 with 197 runs scored.

Where Is The Production Coming From? When looking closely at game-by-game box scores, Memphis has gotten most of its offensive firepower from the first four batters in the lineup. This season, the first four hitters are batting .330. The first four batters have provided 46 percent (83-181) of the clubs RBI this season and 51 percent (101-197) of the runs scored. When the first four batters in the lineup collect four or more hits, the Tigers are 16-5 this season. Four is the magic number in runs scored as the Tigers are 14-0 when the first four batters account for four or more runs. The Tigers first four batters have hit .250 or better in 21 of the 28 games this season and Memphis is 16-5 in those games. What About The Bottom Of The Order? With the top of the order producing just over half of the runs this season, what is the bottom of the order doing you may ask. The 7-8-9 hitters are batting .288 on the season and 54 RBI. The 7-8-9 hitters have scored 51 runs for the Tiger offense and when those hitters score three or more times, Memphis is 7-0. When the last three batters in the order hit at a .250 clip or higher, Memphis is 16-1 on the season. All In The Family This year’s edition of Tiger baseball showcases a unique twist for head coach Daron Schoenrock. This roster features a second Schoenrock, as Daron’s son Erik is a freshman left-handed pitcher on the 2011 squad. Erik earned a win against Saint Peter’s on March 13 to give his father his 156th win at the U of M. With that win, Daron tied the late Al Brown for third all-time on Memphis’ coaching wins ledger.

1-2 Punch The Tiger duo of Drew Martinez and Chad Zurcher are back in form after leading the Tigers to its first Conference USA Tournament appearance since 2007. Both players were honored as 2011 Preseason All-C-USA performers. The Tigers All-C-USA tandem, which combined for 190 hits, 113 runs, 39 stolen bases and a .388 batting average in 2010, picked up where they left off, batting .412, with 87 hits and 54 runs scored this year. The duo has claimed 23 steals on the base paths and has 21 extra-base hits.

Chap Is Back Senior catcher Phillip Chapman showed no illeffects of the season-ending forearm injury he suffered in the final series of the 2010 regular season. In his first action since the injury, the Clinton, Miss., native led Memphis with three hits and four RBI against Evansville on Feb. 19 and came back for three more hits in game two of the series. Chapman is batting .364 this season to go with 59 total bases. He has 36 hits and 20 RBI.
