A Word From The Director For our 6th edition, we decided to do something different. As the team came together to brainstorm over the theme of Beirut Design Week 2017, we had a mini existential crisis. We asked ourselves: what makes us different from all other design events? Are we helping in moving design forward in our community? Are we being self-critical as organizers of the largest design event in the country? Are we pushing our limits? With so many questions that begged answers, it seemed inevitable for this year’s theme to be a question in itself: Is Design a Need? In fact, it was the perfect opportunity to start a conversation within our design community in order for us to understand the wide spectrum of how design is perceived, and the value it holds in people’s perceptions. Moreover, we took this theme as an opportunity to engage with new forms of design that are quite untapped in our region: namely speculative and critical design. These new forms of the discipline encourage the use of fiction in order to stimulate thought and ask questions that are critical to human behavior, consumption, technology and politics- whilst not adhering to the classical problem solving definition of design that applies mostly to market needs. I am thrilled at how many designers took on the theme and created critical interactions, which I hope the audience of Beirut Design Week will appreciate. This year, as a continuation of the theme, we also developed more partnership with regional design weeks and collectives, which we find was missing from our international relations. Moreover, we are very excited to have some of the finest critical and speculative designers from around the world, who will be enlightening us with their work at the Criteria Conference taking place in the Sursock Museum. As every year, none of this would be possible without the contributions of our participants, partners and audience, to whom my team and I are eternally grateful. Thank you for believing in Beirut Design Week and letting us explore our creative community together.

Our environments today are a constant flux of information, messaging, noise and distractions. Sound and Images, be it political or commercial are all around us, we consume them without choosing to. Their intensity assaults our senses, influences our behaviour, and sometimes clouds our minds. Silence has become a luxury good only a few can afford. The Silent Room hopes to create some balance in our world, it is a space accessible to all, acoustically isolated from the outside, with just the hum of the city at its quietest hour. It aims to use silence as a form of resistance. We need more silence, to clean our thoughts, and hear ourselves.

Design is all around us, in every man-made object and interaction, yet many people identify design as a luxury commodity. If design was conceived out of a need to refine the quality of our daily lives, why is it often perceived as something for the elite? With this challenge in mind, a group of Lebanese designers decided to change this misunderstanding of design, and curate an exhibition that reveals the design processes that go into the development of products and services which usually go unnoticed by the consumer including street signs, interiors, mobile apps and cooking utensils.
