GEEWHIZ Griptape Art

Photo: Riwaz Kazi & Jess Ticchio Interview: Tim Mayo

Geewhiz Griptape is a collaborative project by Riwaz Kazi and Jess Ticchio that uses their collective skills to create tangilble art for your skateboard. Contact Riwaz or Jess for more information about Geewhiz Griptape.

Riwazhere Jessticchio

JESS: Like Riwaz said, I draw everything up by hand. I’ll usually begin with a quick pencil sketch on paper, then once I have a general image in my head, I’ll just draw straight onto the grip. The great thing about paint markers like Boardstix is you can so easily hide any fuck ups - which gives me a lot more confidence and freedom while drawing. In terms of content, I’m always finding myself taking sneaky photos of cool colour combos, patterns or weird shapes I see around - most recently was this funky eyeball-print material I saw on a chair in the council clean up! Then I’ll play around with a bunch of ideas inspired by what I’ve seen - e.g. inspiration from the eyeball chair can be clearly seen in the semiilluminati themed eye series of grips we’ve just brought out. The rest of the time, I’ll draw images straight from my brain or from dreams I’ve had and have been lucky enough to remember.

WHAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND GEEWHIZ? RIWAZ: I have always thought Jess’s art was rad, so one day I asked her to do a piece on my grip. It turned out sick and from there we just kept getting ideas. A lot of people showed interest so we thought we’d try make something out of it. JESS: And I had so much fun designing and drawing up Riwaz’s Griptape art, I was 100% open to doing some more pieces for whoever was interested. HOW DO YOU MAKE GEEWHIZ GRIPTAPE? RIWAZ: It’s all hand done by Jess. I’m not that great of an artist haha so for now I just help with designs, getting all the resources together and the business side of it I guess. She’s really creative so sometimes i’ll have an idea and she’ll come back within hours with something sick drawn up.

Skate | George Kousoulis

GEORGE KOUSOULIS Photo: Schooner Portrait: Tim Mayo Interview: Jackson O’Grady George Kousoulis, all round nice guy with an eye for the unconventional approach sits down to talk to us about the state of the Sutherland Shire skate scene, what it’s like to work at Lodown and the question we all wanted to know about two of the younger Lodown riders.

WHAT STARTED YOUR LOVE OF SKATING? The thing that made me start skating was the street my grandparent’s live on. It was a great hill to smash it down in the billy cart on as a kid, so when I started high school and got a xmas complete from my uncle, the hill was there and it all began. WHAT WAS IT LIKE GROWING UP SKATING IN THE SHIRE? It was fun. Always a dope crew to skate with, some decent spots came and went. The Bell Park era was really sick. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE UP AND COMING SKATE SCENE IN THE SHIRE? The scene in the Shire is pretty cool, older crew, teen crew and grommies who all just love skating. There’s not many spots now so everyone has to travel every day to skate but

it’s always worth it. For one of the few areas in Sydney with no skatepark its crazy to think how many amazing skaters have come from the area and how it keeps producing young rippers. HOW DID YOU END UP WORKING AT LODOWN? It was after getting back from Europe a few years ago. I left my previous job before my trip and was pretty over travelling so far for work. When I got back Gav hooked it up. I was super happy, not like the time I asked for a job there when I was 16 and got a straight up no. A job only a couple mins away from home was a good change and a real treat. WHAT’S IT LIKE HAVING GAV AS A BOSS? It’s awesome, doesn’t even feel like a boss. Gav is a good friend and I am very happy to be running the store while he’s 6

THOUGHTS ON CRONULLA SKATE PARK? I’m sick of hearing ‘done before next xmas’ by The council for the last 10 years. Fingers crossed but Sutherland Shire Council has to be the worst?! Completely blowing it. WHO WATCHES MORE PORN? SQUISH OR NIK? If you are skating with Nik he won’t reply to texts between 9:15am and 10am and if he miraculously does he has interrupted his daily love making session with his Mother’s iPad which he takes into his bathroom before every morning shower. As for Squish, he has the key to life. A free account login for brazzers. I’ll let you decide but I’m saying its a tie.

sending golf balls down the fairway and crushing some cans. AS SOMEONE WHO WAS OFTEN ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LENS, HOW DID YOU GET INTO FILMING? Skating with James Hadenham all the time who had a vx and we would always take turns using it. I always liked seeing one of the homies behind the lens getting raw. After a bizarre knee injury which kept me off the board for 6 months a few years ago. I borrowed the camera to help film for Dean’s (Palmer) Death video part and during that time heaps of the homies started stacking clips as well. The idea of a video came up and we began bringing the vx all the time. From that time I bought my own camera setup and always chuck the camera bag in the car and the rest just happens.

“Corey Young is a menace. When he isn’t busy watching 90’s sitcoms you’ll find him terrorising the Sydney streets on his skateboard, popping grates and twisting his body into the latest fancy ledge trick he’s come up with. He’ll happily steal your lunch if you aren’t careful, but he’ll also steal your heart with his charming looks and style on the board. Lock up your daughters when Corey’s in town.” Riely Walker

Corey Young skateboard wizard from the Inner West of Sydney supported by U.P.S skate shop, GMTA skateboards and Nike sb recently went jetsetting around the US of A with some friends. Corey recounts his 2 month trip from San Francisco to New York City.

a st year I went on a two-month trip to America with my buddies Riely, Milan, Jamey, Brendan and guest appearance by Nelson who only joined us in NYC. I saved up every cent I had over the space of a year. Basically I worked odd jobs and did things I’m not proud of. The States is a pretty rad place if you’re skating. We started off in Santa Monica for a few days then we made our way to San Francisco aka the best place on earth. Our SF to NYC journey began. Our journey started with a giant green bus and that was about to go through 29 states on a ridiculous travel/ camping tour, basically you get on this bus that’s run by this hostel/ adventure travel company called the green tortoise. The bus has a bunch of chairs and tables that you fold out into beds somehow, it’s to complicated to get into but it’s hilarious. On this bus we made stops to the Grand Canyon, New Orleans, Smoky Mountains, White sands New Mexico and a whole bunch of other National Parks.

coreyyoung

The bus ended in New York City and we stayed there for two weeks and it was amazing! 99 cents slice pizza, skating around all night and

day, eating lunch at Monk’s coffee shop from Seinfeld, riding the subway to Coney Island. We even rode the greyhound to Philly to skate Love Park. I can’t really put into words how much fun I had skating there and skating all the spots you watch in videos growing up. It’s a dream.

makes you want to live there for the rest of your life. After SF we made our made our way to Hollywood so the dudes and myself could pursue our acting careers. Sad to say it didn’t work out. After all the skating we had done, after all the disgusting food we had eaten. After all the Skate Lab/Berrics kooks we had met it was time to go home.

After New York we got on a 19-hour train ride to Chicago, which we skated for a couple days. Then another 19 train from Chicago to Portland where we stayed for another couple of days and skated Burnside aka the worst place of Earth. The park is run by a bunch of old homeless wizards who skate harder then you and me could imagine. If you go there don’t push in the bowl or you will be stabbed.

The last day of America we went to Disney Land and it was the most magical experience of our lives. Jamey had 0 dollars to his name so we all pitched in and purchased and kilo turkey leg for him where he nibbled on for the whole day giving him the fuel he needed to go on and indulge in rides. He loved that Turkey leg, we all did. I miss you Turks.

After Portland we made our way back to SF on a 48-hour train ride that made Brendan literally cry. We skated SF for another week, which is right where I wanted to be. SF is beautiful. The hills, the vibe, the people and 3rd and army

In the next two weeks myself, Riely, Milan and new boy Michael are going to china for a month trip to skate and do whatever the hell there is to do over there.

Music | Jaguar Club

JAGUAR CLUB Jaguar Club a 4 piece psych band from the Sutherland Shire in Sydney. The band consists of Zac McCall, Liam Roffe, Jack Scott and Max Brown. Photo: Tim Mayo Interview: Tim Mayo

clubjaguarclub www.soundcloud.com/jaguarclub

HOW DID JAGUAR CLUB COME ABOUT? Well me and Roffe have been in each others bands since primary school doing Blink 182 and Ramones covers but it wasn’t until year 10 I think when we were all in the same music class full of the usual trumpet and clarinet players and we would just sit around together. Jack and Max had had a couple of jams and they asked me to come along, and then we asked Roffe to come along soon after.

YOU ARE A BAND YOU NEED TO SEE LIVE IS PERFORMING LIVE SOMETHING YOU HAVE ALWAYS ENJOYED? Definitely, we like to run around on stage and swap instruments during our shows because we have no set roles really. You’re always gonna get a better experience seeing a band live because you’re seeing it how it was meant to be heard, not just listening to how a bands managed to throw a song together for an iPod.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR INSPIRATION? Musically, Jack and Max could name every Beatles song ever released, so they are massive for them. And you know, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Hendrix, Sabbath influenced us all differently as cliché as it sounds. Can’t go past the current psych bands though that really inspired us to be a band, Tame, POND, Dungen, Deerhunter which we really frothed on in the early days.

ANY NEWS ON A POTENTIAL EP? Just cleared out a room in Jack’s house and set everything up. Roffe has come back broke as fuck from his travels so he’s spending most of his weekends in there working on our new stuff. Fingers crossed though we’ll have an EP out this year finally.

LETTERS TO LIONS Letters to lions a 4 piece band all about good vibes from the southern beaches of Sydney. Formed in 2011, The band consists of Curtis Newbitt-hill, Joel Osborn, Jackson Kent and Adam Newling. Photo: Tim Mayo Interview: Tim Mayo

letterstolions www.letterstolions.bandcamp.com

GOT ANY STORIES FROM YOUR GIGS? Jackson’s first show with the band was at ‘The Lair’ on George St and half an hour prior he and Adam had a scuffle which turned into a brawl, so that was a pretty gnarly night.

HOW DID LETTERS TO LIONS COME ABOUT? There was never really some great pre meditated conception of the band, it was just some dudes brought together to play music. WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR INFLUENCES? We all listen to lots of good music and live pretty fun lives I think that’s inspiration enough, in the beginning we kind of coined ourselves to want to sound like a particular band but things need a starting point and every day we are making our own way with our own sound.

WHATS YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? We are heading into the studio soon to make some bangers and hopefully a tour late in the year.

FREAK STREET Illustrations Interview: Tim Mayo Ben Adams is a 23 year old illustrator based up in Brisbane. His unique style uses social trends and fictional drug fueled stories as inspiration. We spoke with Ben to get an insight into mind behind Freak Street Illustrations.

freakstreeet

Ben Adams Skeleton Holiday 2014 Illustration

HOW DID YOU GET INTO ILLUSTRATING? I’ve really always drawn pictures, even as a little kid. When I finished high school I studied a degree in 2D animation and basically drew consecutively every day for three years. That was when I really got into illustration, and after finishing my degree i’ve just been drawing and drawing. I’m more motivated to draw now than i’ve ever been.

WHO HAVE YOU WORKED WITH? I work with and for Mitch Hughes who owns Slapweh Skate Co. and have done work for his company over the last year and a half, which has been a helluvva lot of fun. Other than that, it’s just been a lot of freelance work here and there for companies and clients, friends, bands, skate shops, tattoos etc. It’s always changing and it’s a lot of fun.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR INSPIRATION? Social trends are always great to make fun of and draw from. Friends, exaggerated and often fictional drug stories. psychedelic art, Robert Crumb and Gilbert Shelton, and a lot of lyrics from music, especially Stephen Malkmus from Pavement. His lyrics are always mind-blowing and give me funny ideas.

WHATS YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? I’m planning on getting my Freak Street Illustrations made into a small business, getting books made, start making zines and shirts printed up, and getting a website underway. I just really wanna get my stuff out there and seen. I’m really psyched on everything at the moment though, really happy with how everything’s turning out. 17

JAKE BEVAN Photos: Justin Bevan Text: Jake Bevan “Jake Bevan, or as most call him Bev. This man is a preacher for positive vibes. If he is not near a beach you’ll find him terrorising dance floors busting out moves worse than your dad. Humble, down to earth and always up for a good time. When this man is at his best, get the cameras ready because some eye balls will be popping and some sprouters will be frothing.”

to get your hands on and completely socially acceptable. Its common place to roll up to the beach and some dude you have never met who may be 70 years old or 15 years old offer to smoke a joint with you before you go surfing together. 3. Before I went I was told that Americans as a whole were rude and obnoxious people. Then I went there and was tripping everyone is so nice wants to help out however they can. You meet people at the beach and they will let you crash at there place, sell you weed give you a cold beer, a hot meal when your starving at the beach and will expect nothing in return.

AUSTRALIA / SHIRE I don’t know what to say about Cronulla and Australia in general, Because a lot of people here are ignorant to everything going on around them. But at the same time I love where I am from and am proud to live in the country that I do. A lot of the best people I have ever met are from here and the best experiences I have ever had have been on Australian road trips or partying with my friends at home. I don’t know it’s just home ya know? and I love it more than anywhere else I have been in the world so far. CALIFORNIA There is a few things about California that make it so epic. 1. The beach culture there is insane. They get to the beach early and they don’t move for the whole day. Breakfast lunch and dinner is all made on the beach. Usually on a BBQ or what they just call a grill. The beers are on ice all day and the vibes are nothing but positive. 2. The herbs there are on another level. Like nothing you have experienced before, it’s easy

BOARD SHAPING I don’t know about board shaping. No one wants to teach you anything about it like they don’t want to tell secrets. But I guess that’s because they don’t want anyone taking there business from there when there isn’t all that much work these days with machine made pop out boards coming in from Thailand or china or where the fuck is cheapest for some dude with a few million to build as many boards as they 20

Those legends being Jordie Brown and Stuart Patterson who are both experts in there respective styles of building boards. And it’s rad because when I was young my parents kinda wanted me to do the real job thing but that’s never been me and they saw that eventually after a bunch of shit marks at school cause I went surfing instead of going to class. And now I do what I love doing and I can surf when the waves are good and work when they aren’t and it’s dope. Maybe i’ll never be a millionaire but at least i’ll be happy not some over worked pencil pusher who hates his job going to work everyday.

MY VAN Hm…. So bummed it died literally two weeks ago. But its was epic I bought it for 500 bucks and I absolutely flogged it for like 5 years. Drove it to Noosa and back like 5 times, to Victoria and back 5 or 6 times plus countless trips to crescent head, byron, or just down south for a weekend away. It was all time I had the best road trips of my life in that van. Waking up and one of my buddies passed out in the front seat and I have fallen asleep in the back with the boot open and its pouring rain. Or just when the roof leaked in general if it was parked up hill. It was killer. When it died the front bumper was barely hanging on anymore, it had a cracked windshield, it leaked oil and coolant, it smelt permanently like beer but it was fucking epic haha.

TCSS Are fucking rad. My buddy Sean hooked me up with them when I was only 17 and they have been helping me out ever since. Now one of my real good mates Kai Flint rides for them to and it’s epic cause we go surf and drink beer at the beach and take some photos or whatever and Critical is stoked on that. They don’t care

SLAPWEH Skate Co.

Photo: Rebekah Schott Text: Tim Mayo Slapweh Skate Co. A company all about good vibes. Run by Mitch Hughes out of southern Sydney Slapweh Skate Co. Provides quality clothing and hardware for all kinds of shred sledding. Their designs are completely original and hand dyed. Mitch sat down to talk what goes into Slapweh Skate Co.

WHAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND SLAPWEH? Skating has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember, I then started thinking about different designs and items I could release that would attract skaters. Once I had an idea of what I wanted, a friend of mine who is an artist drew up a few different designs to go onto each item and then we went from there!

slapwehskateco www.slapwehskateco.com mitch@slapwehskateco.com

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SET YOURSELF APART FROM OTHER LABELS? We hand dye all of our clothing, meaning no item is the same. This allows each customer to own something that is unique, giving them a sense of individuality.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE INSPIRATION BEHIND SLAPWEH? Bakerboys Distribution; which incorporates Deathwish, Baker and Shake Junt, have always been my favourite brands as they represent both hippie and gangster styles. Four Twenty is our sponsor team and currently have Joel Bray on it, he is a huge inspiration for us as his style of skating is unbelievable.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR SLAPWEH? We are aiming to take the company over to USA/Canada as we think our target market will be larger therefore resulting in much more exposure and opportunities, bringing us closer to opening up our very own store.

CHLOE COLES Photo: Vivien’s Models Interview: Tim Mayo

From the small town of Stanwell Park in the northern parts of Wollongong hails Chloe Coles. Chloe sits down to talk with about her recent travels to london.

YOU USED TO DO GYMNASTICS HOW WAS THAT PART OF YOUR LIFE? I did gymnastics for about 10 years competitively. I travelled overseas and around the country and trained 6 days a week. It was my whole life. I didn’t know anything else. It’s funny looking back and thinking that was in this lifetime. Gymnastics is brutal. I was so muscly I used to verse the boys in chin up wars and karate at school. I got accepted into the Australian Institute of Sport and shortly after I quit due to personal reasons. I didn’t know what to do with myself, so on my weekends, my little brother and I would ride up to the shops and buy Portuguese tarts and play with Pokémon cards. I had a life size wooden doll named Missy Moo that I would play with too. She was cool.

WHAT PART HAS YOUR MUM PLAYED IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR? Mum has played a huge part in my (modelling) career. She is the best. I wouldn’t be doing it if it weren’t for her. It’s a lot about self-motivation and I don’t have much of that in this industry. I wouldn’t be here if she didn’t push me. She is always proud of me. Even when I fail miserably. She laughs and tells me to get back up. It’s nice. Even at 20. I keep forgetting I’m 20. YOU JUST WENT OVER TO LONDON, HOW WAS THAT? London was an amazing experience. I went over completely solo and lived there for 2 and a half months. I didn’t know anyone, which made it interesting but kind of cool at the same time. I met some of the strangest people in this world I’m sure. I bought a bike and named it Kvazimodo, but then his wheel fell off. So that was an awkward time of my life.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO MODELLING? I was scouted at a shopping mall in Parramatta with my mum and I was like why the heck not.

People | Chloe Coles

WHAT DID YOU GET UP TO OVER THERE? WHAT WAS AN AVERAGE DAY LIKE? Hmmmm.. Every day was so different I never had an average day. I guess the only similarity with each day was my porridge with honey in the morning. I was working over there most days, with different clients, in different towns, so I never knew what the day would bring. And on my days off I’d swing onto Kvazimodo and ride around until I was finally lost. And then I’d scrapbook in the parks. I have a scrapbook from London and I think it’s one of my most prized possessions. Do people still scrapbook?

YOU ALSO STUDY GRAPHIC DESIGN, HOW DO YOU FIND THE TIME FOR ALL THIS? I completed one year of my studies at billy blue and then deferred for this year so I could travel and explore this strange place we call planet earth. I was still modelling as well as studying though; I’m still not too sure how I did both. Good question. YOU DABBLE IN ART AND EVEN HAD A SHOW RECENTLY, HOW WAS THAT? Yes I had a solo exhibition at an art gallery called the foxhole earlier this year. It went really well! I sold most of the pieces for some reason and got a really good response, which was nice for my self-esteem I think.

WHO DID YOU GET TO WORK WITH? Vogue UK, Ziad Ghanem, Agent Provocateur and man up girl to name a few!

WHAT’S YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE? I don’t even know what I’m doing in the next 5 minutes so this question is hard to answer. I’m kind of hungry... I might go and eat something. Craving sweet potato. Ummmm but seriously, I think I want to be pursuing a career in art somewhere.

ANY FUNNY STORIES FROM LONDON? I lived with an old woman named Stella in Shoreditch. She was probably about 60 years old. She used to hide the bath plug from me and the salt and pepper. It was so weird. And then one day she kicked me out and told me that she was married to a gay guy named Novos. It was all too much. Moral of the story, Never trust a Stella.

At Last | T$Bu

AT T$BU LAST Jon Karim

soundcloud.com/tsbu thestrangerbetweenus

LAST ALBUM YOU BOUGHT? Haha fuck man, the longer I sit here and think about it the more I feel like a douche. I stopped buying CD’s in like 2004. Lately I’ve been hitting the vinyl. I’d have to say my last purchase was probably Grover Washington Jr ‘Inside Moves’ or Tom Scotts ‘Shadows’.

LAST WEBSITE/BLOG YOU VISITED? For music- Synthtopia and Matrixsynth (reviews of all the new shiet plus Matrixsynth has a classified section a must read for the synthporn enthusiast.) For the lols-Browncardigan and that jedi thread on sk8parx.

LAST TRACK/ALBUM LISTENED TOO? https://soundcloud.com/sangobeats/sangowaldo-crossroads-feat-spzrkt listening to this right now.

LAST MEAL YOU ATE? The lady made dope a Dope Carbonara last night oooooft. LAST BOOK YOU READ? Ernest Hemmingway ‘To Have and Have Not’ mad sea dawg tale.

LAST SHOW YOU ATTENDED? Flylo at the Opera house. Shit was legitimately life changing.

LAST TIME THAT CHANGED YOUR LIFE? Probably singing the accapella version of drop it like it’s hot with Phat-Laced and Sharpy in the Botanical Gardens before the Flylo concert.

LAST MOVIE/ TV SHOW YOU WATCHED? I’ve been bumping Law and order SVU heaps Stabler is my homeboi and I’ve got a weird pre pubescent crush on Olivia. Plus anything that regularly features Ice T is dopeness. I also watched a awesome movie by Director Larry Clark Called ‘Ken Parks’, one of the only movies that made me both laugh and cry. Shit was way too relatable.

LAST WORDS? New shit dropping very soon just sorting out the copyright/bullshit that comes with releasing an album. Shout outs to: 3Che family, Master Jiggy, The Thoughtful Dude, Rabble, Phat-Laced, Mickey Kojack, Cold Castle, All the dis bumping my shit, All the dis not bumping my shit, All the dubstep dis out there,Jjigsaw puzzles, Sadboys, Naruto, timdoggy777, Dave Carter, My Boo, Champion ruby , Gentle records, Tiby Tablet, Carl, Boris

LAST THING YOU LOST? My socks man, all the fucking time. Haven’t seen a matching pair in too long. And those stupid midi to usb cables, the ones for midi controllers/ printers.
