Fire Prevention
MEASURES
D
id you know that, according to the National Fire Protection Association, most people have a false sense of security regarding house fires, believing that they would have approximately six minutes to evacuate their home in the event of a fire? In reality, smoke and fire spread rapidly and can overcome occupants in less than three minutes. When a fire occurs, there’s no question that time is critical. The good news is there are several important steps you can take to maximize your escape time. With the following measures in place, you’ll create critical protection for what matters most –– your home and family.
1
. Install smoke alarms. You should have one in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. For the best protection, make sure all smoke alarms are interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound.
2
. Inspect and clean smoke alarms monthly. Replace batteries in spring and fall. To clean the alarm, open the cover and gently vacuum the interior.
3
. Prepare and practice a fire escape plan. Draw a floor plan of your home, marking two ways out of every room — especially sleeping areas. Discuss the escape routes with every member of your household, and agree on a meeting place outside your home in case of emergency. Practice your escape plan at least twice a year.
4
. Select building materials that provide passive fire protection. Passive fire protection is part of the core of the building and helps control fire by limiting its spread. One very effective form of passive fire protection is the installation of insulation. When adding or upgrading insulation, look for products made from naturally fire-resistant, inorganic materials. A favorite among builders, contractors and homeowners is a stone wool insulation called Roxul Safe ‘n’ Sound, which offers fire resistance up to 2,150°F. Its melting point is higher than the temperature of a typical house fire, which means it will stay in place longer to provide passive fire protection when every second counts, allowing more time for safe evacuation and for first responders to arrive.

BE THE TALK OF THE BLOCK WITH THESE SPOO IDEAS TO MAKE YOUR HOME THE GHOUL OF
HALLOWEEN IS A GREAT TIME TO EXPLORE YOUR CREATIVE SIDE,
especially when it comes to decorating for trick-or-treaters or planning a party. Many special spooky effects can be used to create the scary, intimidating atmosphere you desire. • DRY ICE: Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide. It is a good coolant because it can reach temperatures below that of ice and it will not leave a puddle or damp residue behind. Dry ice changes from a solid to a gas with no liquid form, through a process of sublimation. Place dry ice in punch bowls or beverage glasses. Or use dry ice in any other liquid to create billowing plumes of vapor that add to the spooky effects. Just be sure to handle dry ice very carefully and make sure it is inaccessible to curious kids. • SMOKE MACHINE: Rent or purchase smoke machines, which can be found at party stores or big box retailers, to add to your eerie atmosphere. Dim the lights and have smoke rolling through the party room or by the front door. CMYK
• LIGHTNING AND THUNDER KITS: These kits combine strobe lights or lighting effects with sound systems to simulate the sounds and sights of a thunderstorm. • FAUX COBWEBS: Purchase spiderweb kits at retailers or make your own with cotton. Pure cotton balls can be pulled apart and stretched over various items in the house to create a spiderweb effect. • ACCENT LIGHTING: Drape a nonflammable piece of fabric over a lampshade to cast different hues around a room. This also dims the brightness in the room, creating shadows here and there.

Throw a HAUNTINGLY good Halloween party
H
alloween is a special day that delights children of all ages and helps adults feel like kids at heart. Few people want the fun to end once trickor-treating is over. By throwing a Halloween party, revelers can continue celebrating well into the evening. When hosting a Halloween party, it helps to determine who will be in attendance before making any plans. Parties that include children should be PG in nature, and hosts should find the right balance between scary and fun. While you want to have a certain measure of the macabre, make sure you don’t send young guests home with nightmares. Reserve gruesome decorations and details for adult-only parties.
OKILY CREATIVE F THE PARTY!
Halloween parties do not necessarily need to be ghoulish to be fun. Try a glittery gala masquerade party or decorate exclusively in orange and black. Classically eerie parties may feature ravens and crows, or they can be subtlely spooky with red candles and heavy curtains.
Many people can’t wait to dress up for a Halloween party, even picking out their costumes months in advance. Still, not everyone feels comfortable donning a costume. To welcome all guests, don’t make costumes mandatory. One way around this is to set up a Halloween Disguise Table full of accessories that anyone can borrow and use to alter their appearance. Goofy glasses, strange hats, adhesive mustaches, or masks can be fun. If someone didn’t feel comfortable dressing in full costume, he or she may be more apt to pop in a set of plastic fangs or put on a spinning bow tie. Food is an integral part of any party and can enhance Halloween soirées. Candy is a pivotal component of Halloween and you can play off that theme at your party. Set up a candy bar full of appropriately hued candies of all shapes and sizes. Put them on display in clear glass or plastic canisters so they add to your Halloween décor. Some people like to get creative with Halloween cuisine, crafting foods into items that may look like parts of the body or other symbols of the holiday. Cookie cutters can turn sandwiches, desserts, biscuits, and many other foods into different shapes. However, foods also can be made a tad more spooky simply by renaming them or presenting them in interesting containers. Why not serve punch out of a fish aquarium? Other beverages can be housed in jugs or old bottles and labeled “potions.” Use laboratory instruments, such as petri dishes, vials and beakers, to serve snacks. A Halloween party makes for a fun night, and there is no limit to what hosts can do when planning their scary soirées. CMYK

HEY, MILLENNIALS:
PURSUE A CAREER IN REAL ESTATE!
Millennials, those aged 18 to 34, are looking for a career that allows them to be independent, flexible and entrepreneurial, according to a recent study from Bentley University. A career in real estate meets all of these specifications, and also offers a laundry list of advantages and benefits that make it the perfect occupation for young professionals.
want; it all depends on their aspirations. Realtors® have access to additional education and resources that can help grow their business and increase their income. There is really no limit on how far hardworking, motivated men and women can advance in the field.
“Now that the real estate market is on the upswing, there are huge opportunities for young people to enter the industry, and joining the National Association of Realtors® and the Arkansas Realtors® Association offers millennials even more advantages,” said Maurice Taylor, 2017 Arkansas Realtors® Association President. “With benefits such as a Young Professional Network and award programs like the ’30 Under 30’ awards, there has never been a better time for a young person to become a Realtor®.”
HERE ARE SOME OF THE ADVANTAGES MILLENNIALS CAN EXPECT FROM A CAREER IN REAL ESTATE: BE YOUR OWN BOSS. Millennials are the true entrepreneurial generation, and real estate is the ultimate profession for self-starters. Real estate agents are independent contractors, meaning agents can choose to work as much or as little as they want; it all depends on their aspirations. “The success of your business is entirely in your own hands,” said Taylor. EARN WHAT YOU WANT. A career in real estate offers individuals the flexibility and freedom to set their own pace and income goals. Profits are often directly linked to efforts, so agents can choose to work as much or as little as they

MAKE YOUR OWN SCHEDULE. Real estate has never been a 9-to-5 business, and while Realtors® are often at the mercy of their client’s timetable, they also have a lot of freedom when creating their own schedule. “If you need to arrange a doctor’s appointment or attend a family event, you can organize your schedule around it,” said Taylor. “And you may never have to ask permission to take a vacation!”
BE A PART OF YOUR COMMUNITY. Building relationships and becoming a
presence in the community is an important part of any agent’s business. “Realtors® have unparalleled knowledge of their local neighborhoods and regional market conditions, and to maintain that knowledge, many are active participants in their community,” said Taylor. “Realtors® live in the communities where they work, so helping their neighbors achieve the dream of homeownership and being a good neighbor are important.” For more information about becoming a Realtor®, visit www.arkansasrealtors.com.
REALTORS® WORKING ON MANY FRONTS TO HELP THOSE IN NEED AND MAKE OUR COMMUNITIES STRONG This week’s House to House article was adapted from the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® letter from Bill Brown, 2017 NAR President and Bob Goldberg, 2018 NAR CEO.
S
ince Hurricanes Harvey and Irma made landfall, we have watched thousands of communities ravaged by wind, rain and rising floodwaters. Only 15 percent of homes in Harris County, which includes Houston, and 20 percent of Corpus Christi are covered by flood insurance, CNN reports. In Florida, with 1,350 miles of coastline, the most in the continental United States, just 42 percent of the 2.5 million homes in hazard zones, are covered by flood insurance, according to the Federal Emergency Management Association.

While we may feel helpless to stop acts of nature, we are not powerless to protect these and other homeowners across the country. More than 122,000 REALTORS® responded to the Call for Action earlier this month to urge Congress to reform and extend the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) past the current September 30, 2017 deadline. Congress and the White House responded by extending the program until December 8, 2017. But this is not enough. The REALTOR® Party will continue its efforts to urge Congress to make critical reforms to the programs, as well as reinstate it for years to come, not just months. The recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma are and must be the first priority. Not only are the REALTOR® Family’s thoughts and prayers with these hurricane victims, but REALTORS® also are opening their pocketbooks through the REALTOR® Relief Foundation. Just this week, NAR (NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®) contributed $600,000 to the Foundation in support of the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Over the past two weeks, REALTORS® across the country pledged and donated approximately $1.2 million and counting. All of the funds collected – 100 percent -- go to disaster relief causes. In the meantime, NAR will continue to support comprehensive reform legislation to make critical improvements to the NFIP, including increased funds for mitigation activities, caps on overall premium increases, improved claim and mapping processes, as well as removing hurdles for more private market participation in the flood insurance market. Collectively these improvements will benefit both homeowners and taxpayers. REALTORS® are an integral part of the communities in which we live and work. Hurricanes Harvey and Irma and their aftermath have created an unprecedented disaster, and the REALTOR® Relief Foundation will help families who have endured unimaginable loss. But remember, the REALTOR® Relief Foundation works throughout the year to help families hurt by wild fires, acts of terrorism, tornadoes, floods and more. This foundation, established 16 years ago after the 9/11 attacks, is an expression of our members’ commitment to rebuilding communities. After all, strong communities are what we’re all about.
