endocino County is a favorite for Location Scouts, and has been for over one-hundred years! Our relatively close proximity to Hollywood, remote location, and natural beauty make Mendocino uniquely suited to celluloid. Over 50 television series or films have been fully or partially filmed in Mendocino County, including Oscar winners, such as “East of Eden” with James Dean, and “Same Time Next Year” with Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn. Cult classics, such as Stephen King’s “Cujo,” “Overboard” with Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, or “Forever Young” starring Mel Gibson remain celebrated crowd-pleasers; and if you are a noir fan, then you will be delighted to know that Angela Lansbury’s “Murder She Wrote” was filmed on the Mendocino Coast! Her tiny, east-coast village filled with mayhem and ne’re-do-wells was actually Mendocino village.

he gateway to Mendocino County from the Sonoma coast on Highway 1 brings you through a surreal landscape of minimalist modern homes that seem to blend into the surrounding environment. The quiet seems to go on forever, until you arrive at Gualala. A bustling artist’s haven full of colorful buildings and colorful people; Gualala is a festival town. From the Whale & Jazz Festival to the Festival of Trees, you can find yourself immersed in the creative culture of this coastal getaway. Further north on Highway 1, you’ll be treated to continuous views of coastal prairie, uninhabited beaches, and massive crags jutting out of the Pacific. Nestled into the terrain is Point Arena; one of two cities on the Mendocino coast. Head out to the pier for lunch or surfing, take in a movie at one of the oldest theatres in California, visit an African animal preserve, or find a delightful snack along your way. Slightly north, you’ll find a majestic row of ocean Cypress leading to one of the few pacific lighthouses left in existence. This is also the gateway to the newly established Point ArenaStornetta Lands; the only land-based portion of the California Coastal National Monument. If you’re planning on continuing northward, you’re in for more stunning coastal prairie and bowing Cypress. Once the seacliffs become more dramatic and the forest starts to thicken, you’re not far from Elk. One of the more romantic, scenic, and hushed locations for couples, Elk has a unique and proud history of being at once coastal and very much a part of the rolling hills sheltering the west side of Anderson Valley. If you’re not staying overnight, stop here for breakfast or lunch. There are some exceptional eats in this little village.

riving north from Healdsburg on Highway 101 will start to give you a sense that you have escaped urban normalcy in exchange for rolling hills, ancient oaks, and vines as far as the eye can see. You’ll reach Cloverdale, and exit to Highway 128 to Mendocino. This is a uniquely beautiful journey through oak covered hills into the town of Boonville; the heart of Anderson Valley wine country. Boonville is home to “Boontling” a completely singular dialect. Though locals speak English, you can get a taste of Boontling at the local brewery, and several other establishments. uilt almost entirely on ridges overlooking the Pacific, it is as if you can see the curvature of the Earth from Albion. A significant place in history, Albion is the soul of the back-to-land movement championed in the 1960’s. If San Francisco wasn’t counterculture enough for someone in the era of change, peace, and love; they came here. Kayaking, camping, and some of the best fine dining on the coast can be had in Albion.

endocino is unique in both scenery and culture. The impossibly beautiful surf-haloed peninsula on which the village sits is crowned with wildflowers and storm sculpted cypress. Architecturally, the buildings are Americanized Victorians with lush English gardens and a smattering of Craftsman and Cottage structures representative of the millworking era. You’ll notice all the water towers; they made indoor plumbing possible for the village in the 1800’s using gravity to simulate water pressure instead of using ground pumps and wells. Many buildings and businesses active in the village today are Victorian themed, taking you to another place as soon as you pass their thresholds. Others have adopted more recent, but historically significant values from the 1960’s counterculture movement, promoting: community, stewardship of the land, health, and simplicity. Still others echo the opulence of the surrounding, natural beauty. Together, they create a tapestry of seeming opposites, woven to create something singularly wondrous. Such a thing cannot be kept secret, and as Mendocino has slowly evolved into a visitor’s haven. That evolution has brought the increased availability of delectable cuisine; from Pacific Fusion to traditional French dining, talent thrives in our rural kitchens and bakeries. Outside of the village, you will find trails for all sports, scenery, and seasons along with kayaking, surfing, and horseback riding opportunities. aspar, just north of Mendocino, is home to some of the most loved beaches on the coast, ideal for coastal camping, surfing, and a day of rest and warmth. ort Bragg is the largest City on the Mendocino coast with a population of just under 8,000. Once an Army installation toward the end of the American Civil War, Fort Bragg hasn’t been home to an actual “fort” during this century or the last. eggett is the first town in Mendocino County you’ll reach if you’re traveling south on Highway 101. Home to the drive-thru Chandelier Tree, and some of the largest trees in the world including one of the tallest Redwoods: the 1,200 years old, 225 foot Captain Miles Standish tree. You can enjoy a day of hiking, picnicking, and swimming at Standish-Hickey State Reserve. Campsites are available here. To continue to the Mendocino coast, take Highway 1 toward Westport. Westport welcomes you to the Pacific after a winding southwestward drive through Redwoods and Giant Oaks...Highway 1 opens up to a clearing, and then...endless blue: you made it! If quiet, isolated perfection is what you’re after; stop for the night. There are camping, bed & breakfast, and hotel lodging options. Most inns offer dining and/or a hearty breakfast, and there are few places as well suited to quiet contemplation or settling down with a good book and good company.
