Located at the Mendocino Coast Chamber of Commerce office in Fort Bragg, our film commission is proud to serve the film industry, whose tradition in our county extends back more than 100 years. With 3500 acres in the county and 100 miles of rugged coastline, as well as beautiful redwood forests, rolling hills, a working harbor, ranches, farms, vineyards, rivers, two lighthouses and rocky coastal cliffs, our venues can substitute for locations like New Zealand, New England, Ireland and Scotland, to name a few. The film commission provides scouting, permit information, maps, crew resources, and lodging and dining options for film crews. East of Eden, Dying Young, Summer of ’42, Overboard, and Murder, She Wrote are just a few of the notable films and TV shows made in Mendocino County. A full list and location details about films and television made in Mendocino county is available at FilmMendocino.com

Westport
Coming in from Leggett in the north, the tiny village of Westport is the gateway to the Mendocino Coast, with beaches, big cliffs, and state parks both to the north and south, offering 180-degree ocean views. On a clear day you can see the Lost Coast to the north and Fort Bragg headlands to the south. There are charming hotels and B & B’s to stay in, a rustic store and deli with a gas pump, the beautiful Westport Hotel and Old Abalone Pub, and Howard Creek Ranch Inn, a 60-acre ocean front historic farm. Fun activities during the year include the annual Mother’s Day Rubber Ducky Race, and Volunteer Fire Department barbeques. It feels like one of those places you don’t expect to happen upon in this modern day, which is one of the reasons it is such a treasure! To Hwy 101 & Leggett N Old Westport School

Fort Bragg has transformed itself from a logging and fishing village into a thriving tourist destination; a hub for visitors who want to enjoy all of the surrounding natural beauty as well as the town, with friendly, stylish boutiques that make shopping fun. In spring, fall, and summer, the streets are full of tourists enjoying a variety of restaurants, shops, and art galleries in between trips to state parks and reserves—Fort Bragg is the official gateway to the California Coastal National Monument. During the winter, the area is transformed into a magical world—a quiet getaway where you won’t miss the crowds. Enjoy scenic vistas while you contemplate the beauty and peace of the natural environment. The Ka Kahleh Trail Fort Bragg’s Coastal Trail, established in 2015, is one of the most beautiful walks you can imagine –along the headlands, on land that was owned by the lumber mill and not accessible to the public for more than 100 years. Harbor seals, sea lions, and a wide variety of seabirds and animal families enjoy the diversity of habitats provided by the ocean and rocks. One of the most common questions is “How do you get to Glass Beach?”. It’s easy access from Noyo Headlands Park on the trail. Another spectacular stop is Otsuchi Point, named for Fort Bragg’s sister city in Japan. If you drive south to Cypress street you’ll find the south trail, where you can see the Frontier Cemetery, the Noyo Center for Marine Science ‘Crow’s Nest”, and catch a glimpse of the boats in Noyo Harbor. In 2018, the north and south trails were joined together for one of the most spectacular continuous trails on the coast. North of Fort Bragg there’s a trail to the Pudding Creek Trestle and old Haul Road, with ocean vistas all the way through to MacKerricher State Park. Other Fort Bragg attractions include Noyo Harbor, and the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, named one of the top 10 in the nation by USA Today, along with the Skunk Train, and the Guest House Museum. Whale watching, sport fishing, kayaking, bird-watching, horseback riding, hiking, and biking are just a few of the activities to enjoy when visiting Fort Bragg. Photo by : Eric Burch

Mendocino Old Style Victorian Charm by the Sea

Mendocino
Painting by : Erin Dertner
The picturesque village of Mendocino is perched on the cliffs of a peninsula overlooking the sea. The Victorian and salt box architecture, water towers, and abundant wildflowers create a feeling of timeless romance—no wonder the village has been the setting for a variety of films and television programs over the years. “Marry Me in Mendocino” is a popular refrain as weddings and other special occasions are celebrated in style in this captivating coastal location. The Mendocino Art Center, established in the 1950s, brought Bay Area artists and craftspeople to the area, and the center continues to provide the perfect venue for artists, photographers, writers, and artisans of all types. On the same property is the Mendocino Theatre Company, which produces world-class plays throughout the year. The Mendocino 4th of July Parade is a highlight of the summer, when streets are packed with locals and visitors who enjoy the diversity, interesting political themes, and remarkable people and animals who populate this unusual parade. remarkable array of shops, art galleries, and businesses make exploring Mendocino one of the most enjoyable activities on the coast. Pick up a walking guide at the Ford House on Main Street or the Kelley House Museum on Albion Street. North of Mendocino is the Point Cabrillo Light Station, with a fascinating period museum recreating the light keeper’s house in the 1930s, and a marine exhibit. Tours of the 3rd order Fresnel lens are scheduled during the year, and you’ll find a charming gift shop with historical exhibits, as well as restored cottages where you can stay. Jughandle State Natural Reserve offers spectacular ocean views, peaceful forests, and a hike through half a million years of ecological history. The tiny town of Caspar has some wonderful beaches, and the Caspar Community center offers a monthly 4th Sunday organic breakfast, Caspar Pub nights, and pop up dance parties where you can mingle with the locals for an authentic taste of coast culture. Just south of the village, Big River beach is a great venue for outdoor recreation, including kayaking, canoeing, walking, running, and horseback riding. To the east follow Comptche-Ukiah Road to Montgomery Woods State Reserve, home to three of the tallest redwoods on the planet.

E lk / Point Arena / Gualala South of the Navarro River, the coast offers unique views of pasture lands and rugged coastal cliff remeniscent of Ireland. In fact, there’s an Irish Beach just south of the charming little town of Elk, home to an annual summer celebration, “A Great Day in Elk”. Restaurants, a history museum, state park, and sea stacks make this a special stop along the coast. In Point Arena, you’ll find the Point Arena Lighthouse next to the Stornetta Public Lands. Point Arena also has an active fishing fleet, artist community, and beautiful vintage theatre. Gualala borders Sonoma County along the Gualala River. The Gualala Arts Center features art exhibits, festivals, concerts, live theater, and workshops, and the Gualala area offers outdoor activities on Shell Beach, Cooks Beach, Bowling Ball Beach and the Gualala Bluff Trail. Since the fog tends to stay offshore, the area is known locally as “the banana belt.” Just south of Gualala you’ll find the Sea Ranch, with a Scottish style 18-hole golf course that is both challenging and inspiringly beautiful.

ANDERSON VALLEY
Cl over dale / Yo r kvi lle / B oo nvi lle / Ph i l o Driving through the Anderson Valley on 128 is a visual treat, from rolling, oak covered hills near Cloverdale, to charming little pit stops like Yorkville, Boonville, and Philo, you’ll travel through pasture, vineyards, and orchards followed by a quiet drive through majestic redwoods and out to the Pacific Ocean. The vineyards are some of the finest in the world, with tasting rooms dotted along the route and a host of new gourmet restaurants serving locally sourced cuisine and fine wines. The Boonville fairgrounds is the site of the annual Mendocino County Fair and Apple Show every September with music, food, exhibits, and a parade. Nearby, Hendy Woods State Park is the home of two groves of towering redwods with some trees more than 300 feet tall and 1,000 years old. Five miles of trails, rustic cabins and camp sites, canoeing, kayaking, and swimming in summer make Hendy Woods a popular Anderson Valley destination.

Use turnout lanes to allow faster cars to pass so you can enjoy the drive. • Make sure to always pack a sweater or a light jacket for inclement weather.
