Connections in the City Without Ground

30min

30min

In Hong Kong, the city is connected by MTR system. From urban to suburban or to the airport, only cost less than 30 minute. The connection to the whole region is in a good condition. To this site in West Kowloon, what is main function that this station should have? Except the program of an XRL station, this project wants to find out the role that this station plays within the context of Hong Kong. The connections made by the MTR system are defined as regional connections in this project and the other kind of connection which made by pedestrians defined as local connection. Knowing that Hong Kong already have a good regional connection, the condition of local connection is an important issue that people should discuss.

Not a city for pedestrians The well connection form by the MTR system also to be the murderer of West Kowloon’s local connection. The developers of each MTR line are different. They didn’t communicate to each other and did their project separately. This condition made the whole area’s local connection became very weak.

Elevated walkway and underground path try to make it more convenient for pedestrians, but it still cannot solve the problem. Not useful and not safe in both elevated walkway and underground path let this area cut into pieces by the MTR line’s developments.

Potential linking points There are actually many possible place can be used to connect the whole area. In this project is trying to form the connection by continuing the activity. For it is the scale of pedestrians, the connection is more about how to make people use it and have activity here. The diagram below is showing the potential connecting points around our site.

Layers All this potential connecting points are not in the same layer. This is also the feature of Hong Kong. B4 layer is the platform of West Kowloon XRL station which connected to china. B1 layer has the station program which plays the role to connect to other region. B4 and B1 basically create the regional connection. Above ground layer have many other program which makes it possible to create a well local connection here.

The facade of this design composes by the seeds-bricks. When sea levels get higher every year, the facade also would be eroded by the sea and wind. The whole environment will change from coastal environment to sea environment. This design separates the house into three parts. The upper part of the house will turn into the habitat for coastal vegetation. The basement of the house will become the habitat of seaweeds while the coastline totally retreats to the house’s position.

Business Hotel Design

VALUE

The project is involved a business hotel located in Taipei city, adjacent to the MRT station and closed to both railway station and airport. In such an unusual location, the design of the hotel should stride for its uniqueness. Luxury interior design and conventional program like spa would no longer be enough to those patrons in a bustling city.
