FAMILY FERN Urban Center 3015 Comprehensive Design Studio | 2015 Fall | 6 weeks

Introduction The project is an exploration on the future city in 3015. The project focus on the public and private space and the role of the individual and family in the creation of a dynamic and adaptive vertical community.


Observation and Problem Increasingly numbers of families are moving to big cities, living in tiny apartments in order to save the transportation time between work and home so that they can be with their families. The movement makes the city center so crowded, that the living condition becomes not so pleasant. The main goal of this project is to find ways for families to live together in a pleasant environment in a high density urban fabric.

Design Solution The main body of the building consists of two main structures that are alive and can grow with the population growth. One main structure carries all the families and provides the supporting utilities. The other one is a park system. The whole structures are self-sufficient. More than 600 acres of food production area are spread out in different levels on the main stem, providing 16 million pounds of food for up to 8000 residents within easy access.


Residential Structure The house is alive and can grow a new room when there is a baby born in the family. Family members can move out to the same branch when they want to get more personal spaces but still close to the rest of the family. The family events happen in the family living room, outdoor shared space .

Each Generation:

- single bedrooms with restroom (225 square foot per person) - shared outdoor space (320 square foot per person) - family livingrooms (400 square foot)

Social Structure The family events happen in the family living room and outdoor shared space . Communications between families happen in the parks.

Introduction This project consist of the site planning and design for the 50 residents and the public in the Oakwood Center. The project includes design and plan for integrated water, wasteater, energy, building, landscape, education systems.

Introduction This project focus on increase access of people in need to healthy food and activities by identify safe route between people and place, and by design spaces that can be used for food production and park.


Issues - Food Deserts: much of Marion County, IN lies in a pedestrian food desert, meaning the majority of its residents do not live within a 3-5 minute walk of a food access point (grocery stores, food marts, pantries, markets, or farmer’s markets). - “Green Deserts”: Similarly, many of its residents do not live within a 3-5 walk of a park or public green space.

Fountain Square | Pleasent Run Greenway The Pleasent Run Greenway currently transects the southern Fountain Square Neighborhood boundary. Designing the large, undeveloped, surrounding park space with programming for the large numbers of children in the neighborhood may better activate the space as well as help develop a southern neighborhood identity.
