DESK RESEARCH We started by literature review related to the elder’s living. We cared the most about trends and influential factors. The results proved that "senior care + tech" was indeed an opportunity.
TRENDS ON ELDERS LIVING The Decline of Nursing Home Industry The high cost of nursing home and the recent cut of medicare program are likely to cause a decline in the number of people who would like to stay in nursing homes.
Economical Factors According to the same survey by the U.NM 47% of the seniors said they found themselves "always" or "very often" worried about problems with money. While 66 percent wanted to work for money, if only they had the opportunity.
The Rise of Senior Care Technology "Multigenerational housing" is the place that fit their children, family members so that they can take care of each other.
Physical Conditions Driving is an important part of staying independent. In 2009, there were 33 million licensed drivers ages 65 and older. But declining physical abilities cause driving to be a dangerous task for seniors.
Influencial Factors
Cooprerative Living: Senior Co-housing It is the smaller scale of senior community, which has the independent housing. Elders can take care of each other like sharing meals and housekeeping.
Age Discriminations
Neighborhood-Friendly Civic Planning This is the option for senior who want to keep working but are “limited-mobility”. The district is been planned for elderly Aging in Place 90 %of senior adults prefer to age in place. While about 73% of all long term care is provided in the home environment, typically by caregivers who receive no compensation for their labor.
The poll from Marist College ask whether people consider "62" to be old. Only 27% of those surveyed said the 62 is “old",60% said it’s "middle-aged", and 13% called it "young". Additionally, a study by the U.N. shows 67% of the seniors said they believed age discrimination
Mental Conditions Social isolation results in insomnia, depression, a greater likelihood of developing dementia and elevated blood pressure, among other health problems for senior adults.

DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES Defining the project problem and the form of the product is an application.
Emotional granularity is a skill, and people can increase theirs by learning new emotion concepts: new words and their specific meanings. Emotion concepts are tools for living. The bigger people’s tool kit, the more flexibly their brain can anticipate and prescribe actions, and the better they can cope with life.
Help people discriminate between their emotions that all fall within the same level of valence and arousal, labeling their experiences with discrete emotion words Positive exercise to the emotional granularity by encouraging people to identify their emotions by the way of telling the differences among the emotions.

How to set up hyperlinks between columns and columns, between pages and pages, between information and information can realize the efficient use of users, which is the main problem of navigation design thinking.
Information Design It includes information in the form of text, image, animation, video and sound.
Column Design
Screen Space Design The webpage needs to divide the screen space reasonably. There are four basic spaces: the sign image area, the navigation area, the information area and the copyright area. The commercial website also needs to leave the advertisement area and the information interaction area. On the screen space division cross vertical columns, columns, columns, in the same mixed font, font and other basic way, also can use free segmentation.
According to certain logic, the information is classified and organized, which is convenient for users to choose information. Information has many attributes, such as region attribute, time attribute, rank attribute, purpose attribute and so on. In accordance with the specific attributes of the classification organization, according to the site's objectives, user needs, user habits and other comprehensive decisions.
Color Design Color can shape the style of the website, beautify the page, divide the area, clear the information, the color has the expression and symbolic meaning, should first determine the main color of the website, on this basis, choose other auxiliary colors.

I always set myself a rough plan to read a book once a week, but in the first few weeks I was able to enforce it with passion and self-discipline, but later I did once a month, gradually I could not keep on, finally gave it up. Also, sometimes I don’t really know what to read. Choosing a right book for myself is not easy.

KEY FINDING
RESEARCH
Combining interviews and previous analysis, there are some important findings during the process of forming a reading habit for people.
I made an inquiry to a psychologist who works in the field of people’ behaivors in forming habit.
We spend most of leisure time on the Internet, shopping, playing games. Why do people like these entertainment more than reading?
TIME It is so much easier to see a 2 hour movie and get the same essence of the story than to read an entire book, which can take days.
EASE OF ACCESS Books are not that accessible. To see a movie or a TV show you just need to turn on your TV or your laptop whereas for a new book you usually need to buy it from the store or amazon.
Why keeping a reading habit is difficult to do? HIGHER ATTENTION It is far less intellectually challenging to see something in a movie than to understand and imagine what the author meant through words.
“
There is a "feedback mechanism" in our brain affecting our behaviors. Those can immediately get benefits from the behavior will make the brain produce a sense of pleasure as positive feedback to encourage people to go on. For the vast majority of people, they gain "immediate benefits", from entertainment like shopping and playing which needs to pay a very small cost. As for reading, there are not so many benefits in short term but more can be recogised in the long run.
Why these entertainments are so attractive?
“
It is because it aimes at the weakness of human nature. Comfort, enjoyness, and pleasure are at low cost but bring significant benefits. Entertainment behavior can get immediate benefits (or say positive feedback), so it is more favored by the brain.
SOCIAL ASPECT Book reading is essentially a solitary activity. Most people read books alone; Going for movies, watching a TV show with you family are social.
How to improve the enthusiasm of reading?
“
” ”
The most important thing is to establish positive feedbacks. People can try to develop habits in the five steps: setting goals, dividing it into small tasks, taking actions, gaining feedbacks and making adjustment to real situations.

PROTOTYPE Module Testing & Programming
When user is reading, LED can give the response automatically by turning off the LEDs one by one and showing happy face to congratulate user.
LED Pattern Design
Touch Sensor I measured the range of values of pressure in books and found especilly at the binding edge the value can be detected in more accurate levels.
Hardware Combination
LED Matrix
Based on hardware prototyping, I made an acrylic shell collecting electronic devices to test the product in real situation.
I used Potentiometer to light up the LEDs one by one, and changed the color every two lines. Next I read the color value of each LEDs from arrays and made a simple animation.
Ultrasonic Sensor To make sure the distance is suitable to be detected, the ultrasonic is measured in this way.
