PERSONAL STATEMENT I was captivated by the Avonlea Village and Barry’s Pond depicted in Anne of Green Gables. The vivid expressions allowed me to visualize them as actual scenes. Interested in architecture, I have always paid attention to the description of environments in literature. Returning to real life, I sometimes feel regret for the fast-paced modern life that makes people forget previous experiences. Nevertheless, architecture has been silently recording what happened in the past, witnessing our beautiful lives. Aspiring to construct a fulfilling life, I am determined to study architecture. Advancements in artificial intelligence and novel innovations have deeply influenced how we shape architectural environments. Thus, I desire to conduct more experimental attempts to address potential problems through postgraduate study. I have formed my own design style to prioritize the target users, their needs, and the experience they require. I once conducted a collaborative project researching learning spaces suitable for hybrid teaching during the pandemic. Starting with qualitative interviews and focus groups, we applied NVivo to code the data and then used quantitative surveys. The results reveal the crucial role of the accessibility of a place and the comfort of the environment. Additionally, students’ needs mainly lie in the guarantee of attention. When encountering problems, I cooperated to identify key conflicts and gradually deepened our understanding through “questioning”. This experience paves the way for my future collaboration. Admiring architects Herzog and de Meuron, I desire to focus on users’ previous living spaces to extract relevant architectural elements. While designing the two buildings in Kaifeng, I drew inspiration from Along the River During the Qingming Festival. In the first project, based on the existing Kaifeng Zhou Bridge ruins, I designed an underground structure to revitalise the site and let visitors experience the previous prosperity. The most innovative attempt was the plants I integrated into the walls with the method of 3D printing. The second project was funded by the government to design a core building in a newly planned industry park in Kaifeng. Kaifeng used to be the starting point of the Silk Road, playing an important role in overseas trade during the Song dynasty. Therefore, I selected weather-resistant steel plates as the façade material, which can create different shades simulating the flowing colours of silk. In this way, I added to the historical meaning of the architecture and related it to the historical heritage of this ancient city.

On the horizon, I long to continue my exploration of cutting-edge design approaches and philosophies at The Bartlett School of Architecture, mastering parametric software and advanced equipment in the studio through the Architectural Design MArch. By pursuing this programme, I plan to become an interdisciplinary architect to incorporate intelligent technologies into architectural creation with an emphasis on the ecosystem of the urban environment, contributing myself to establish a fresh and sustainable living environment.

Soil erosion is an important global environmental issue that severely affects regional ecological environment and socio-economic development. I conducted research on the local soil and mineral conditions in Kaifeng and proposed three solutions based on the situation of soil erosion.

It captures the daily life of people and the landscape of the capital, Bianjing (present-day Kaifeng) during Four Types of Landforms in Kaifeng

the Northern Song. The theme is often said to celebrate the festive spirit and worldly commotion at the Qingming Festival, rather than the holiday's ceremonial aspects, such as tomb sweeping and prayers. Ink and Wash Experiment

Ink Texture Extraction for Basic Plans Taking a building in the drawing as an example, multiple points are set on the architectural plan's outline, with varying degrees of ink diffusion emanating from each point, resulting in the formation of new architectural boundaries. The characteristics of ink are soft and light, so the architectural points are transformed into pixel blocks. By adjusting the opacity, the architectural boundary with the strongest integrity is determined

Replicate Crowds' Paths with Ink

Ink Diffusion Technique to Redefine Architectural Boundaries

Starting from the foundation of traditional ink painting, we extract lines to form the basic contours of flat wall surfaces. This artistic approach not only pays homage to the delicate aesthetics of ink wash but also serves as a methodical step towards delineating functional spaces within the architectural design. The process involves a thoughtful translation of the fluid and organic quality of ink lines into the more rigid and structured world of architectural planning. By breaking down the ink drawing into its essential lines and shapes, we can define clear boundaries and partitions that contribute to the practical layout of interior spaces. This technique allows us to integrate the elegance and simplicity of ink art into the functional necessities of architectural design, creating spaces that are both visually appealing and pragmatically sound.

Designing Plantable Walls Based on preliminary research, the conclusion was drawn to utilize plants for soil erosion control. Therefore, employing curved ink patterns to design walls conducive to plant growth. In specific architectural spaces, one can observe the graceful curve of walls encircling a central area, giving rise to an array of intimate spaces destined for commercial, creative, and exhibition purposes. Small shops, workshops, and galleries nestle within these curved partitions, each benefiting from the organic flow and connectivity that the design promotes. The curvature of the walls not only contributes to the visual appeal of the space but also enhances its functionality, guiding visitors through a seamless journey from one area to the next.At strategic turning points, the design cleverly incorporates enclosed areas where trees are planted, bringing a touch of nature into the built environment. These green pockets serve as tranquil retreats within the bustling context of commercial and social activities, offering a moment of respite for visitors and occupants alike. Furthermore, the foliage adds an element of softness, contrasting with the harder surfaces of the built form and contributing to the overall aesthetic.

Enrich Underground Spaces with Plant Landscapes

Integrated Underground Space for Land and Plants The space is characterized by an abundance of free-form walls, giving rise to randomly generated small, cave-like alcoves that are conducive to plant growth. These organic nooks provide an ideal environment for a variety of plant species, fostering a natural and inviting atmosphere. Additionally, visitors are invited to explore and discover numerous captivating corners, where they can take pleasure in admiring the diverse plant life and immerse themselves in the unique and immersive experience of the subterranean environment. This design not only provides a sanctuary for flora but also offers a tranquil and stimulating setting for individuals to engage with nature and find moments of peaceful respite within the subterranean space.

The design employs a combination of building blocks to create a rich and varied architectural image, making the building an important landmark in this new development area. In terms of functional organization, the design is partitioned reasonably, separating office and exhibition spaces in the upper and lower levels, with distinct circulation routes. In terms of spatial shaping, the design delineates the entrance courtyard space with two volume elements, creating a semi-enclosed courtyard, and divides the building into clear functional blocks.
