First we wanted to make the project to be in small scale, maybe many small buildings. We also wanted to design it so that you could reach all the common spaces without the need of going outside. Contradictory maybe but we created one large single unit and with some clever design ideas we could break down the scale and create a feeling of many smaller buildings. A third conceptual idea we had in mind was that we wanted to frame Gibraltargatan and make it more of a city-like street. This is the reason behind the long heavy building facing Gibraltargatan. It also functions as a shield for the courtyard making it a quieter place.

[ Site ] The site has ancestry that dates back to the beginning of the 1900s when the first plans to build in this area was made. At our site there is a parking lot right now but before Chalmers needed it as a parking lot it was a football field with running tracks and tennis courts here. The name Gamla Gibraltarvallen reminds us of this heritage in a humorous way. The surrounding buildings that isn’t Chalmers are mostly built around 1940 and are made in a functionalistic style and are made of plaster. The Chalmers buildings are built a little bit later and are made in bricks. There is also a small characteristic building called Gibraltar herrgürd.

The idea of moving to a trygghetsboende is to get the benefits of a community where the architecture makes it easier to socialize with your neighbours. Gamla Gibraltarvallen provides the residents with a lot of possibilities for recreation with the shared dining room, hobby room, organized activities, green houses, rooftop garden, gym and spa.

Ground Floor Plan Scale 1: 500
At the ground floor we have some different levels of privacy like the completely private apartments and common spaces. Then there is a semi-public gym and spa that is open for the residents and pensioners only. This is to improve the everyday life for all the elderly inthis area of Gothenburg. Lastly there are the fully public shops/cafÊs along Gibraltargatan The courtyard is a good place to relax, exercise or if the sun is too hot one can rest under the treetops. Almost half of all the apartments are facing the courtyard which makes the yard feel safe. It’s open to the public but the feeling is a little bit private making it a calm place. The apartments in the ground floor are elevated 1 m to also make them feel more private. The roof on top of the connector is fully accesible for the residents and is their private outdoor garden. It’s a great space for some exercises, allotments, enjoying the sunshine or just have a cup of coffee with your neighbours. We also made some space for green houses and winter gardens in the voids created between the buildings.

[ Street Section ]
By placing a long and heavey building along Gibraltargatan we wanted to frame the street and give it a more city-like feeling. We are planting a new row of trees along the road to shield of the traffic and make the space between the building and the road more pleasant. Closest to the building there will be room for some out door serving (uteserveringar).

Vibrant City
Design Project in Gรถteborg Based on Urban Morphology Type: Urban Design Tutor: Lars Marcus, Meta Berghauser Pont, Henrik Markhede Time: 04.2016 - 05.2016 (1 months) Location: Heden, Gรถteborg, Sverige Category: Academic, Individual work

The design was the final project of Spatial Morphology Studio, and that was a new field to me. Task was to concern a location in Gothenburg that reflects current social and environmental concerns but that also carries international relevance with the intention to involve local authorities as well as the general public. First, relating to how location is created through spatial configuration and accessibility. Second, how such location may be the foundation for different building typologies, constituted by fundamental measures of density.
[ Concept ]
[ Connection—More People Come Here ]
Vibrant city could be described as a place where more people come there, more people live or work there, and more people spend time there. First, more people come here means the area should have a good connection with other places in the city. Second, more people live or work here is that the area has a proper density. Third, more people spend time here means the diversity of land use (offering different opportunities to do something) and built forms (that people would not get bored of). I choose Heden and the surrounding areas as the site of my project. The main reason is that this area located in the central Gothenburg and there are many attractions that you can not find anywhere else, but the area is not as vibrant as it should be. So, I want to do some experiments to test if Heden could be a vibrant area which you can not find in Gothenburg but in other vibrant cities, meanwhile keep some existing qualities (like sports place) and make the most of the attractions.

[ Density—More People Live/Work Here ]
Attractions in and around the site
Central and peripheral part
Two different double-density
I think it is better to have a low density area in the center because that would be more pleasant for people to stay in the public area. So in the central area there would be some low-density public space like commercial area. Along the main streets, it is convenient for citizens get to work, so it is suitable for office buildings. And away from the central area is quite private for residential buildings. If the central area has low density, then the office building and residential building areas could have high density, that is, there need to build some high-rise buildings for both use. In this way, there will be more buildings for residents to live, at the same time, it meets the demand of more and more people move to the city center. Then the second point, more people living and working is satisfied.

[ Configuration—More People Live/Work Here ]
Block proposal
Block in the city of London
Test of evenly distribution of size—not good
[ Land Use—More People Spend Time Here ]
[ New Typology—More People Spend Time Here ] In the central area, there are some large blocks with public use. On the contrast with the high-rise buildings of large size, I suppose a totally different low-rise buildings of small size could be attractive when people get tired of the skyscrapers. This idea comes from a super vibrant area called Sanlitun in Beijing, China. Strictly speaking, it is a commercial center made up of lots of small buildings with a variety of functions. Here people can go shopping, see a movie, have lunch or dinner, see an exhibition, sit in an inner square and watch a performance. The differences between this and the traditional commercial center such as Nordstan are, there are many inner streets but still open to the public, and because of this, people will move around in different streets that would increase their time of staying. From economical view, smaller buildings with an open configuration offers more opportunities to show the products or information. Moreover, the mixed-use also provide people with different things to do in one area without moving to another place, and that in some way achieve the goal of making more people stay there.
Low-density Open Commercial Area
SOHO—Small Office Home Office
Short for small office/home office, a term that refers to the small or home office environment and the business culture that surrounds it. A SOHO is often thought of as being the smallest of small businesses. It is a privately owned and operated business or individuals who are self-employed. SOHO is often characterized as being a small in both the size of the office space and number of employees.

With all this steps being done, the final proposal can be described like this. New Heden area is well connected with other parts of the city by some main streets which allow more citizens come here. There are more buildings for people to live or work with both traditional closed residential buildings and new high-rise buildings, which provide different options to choose. But the most attractive part located in the center, where there are many smaller buildings with smaller size and lots of inner streets, which used intensely by both residents and visitors. I did a betweenness analysis to test it, and turned out to be in the radius of 300m, the new central area is red, and in the radius of 3000m, the new main streets are red. So the proposal is correct in connection and centrality. In addition, the density calculation shows the FSI increase from previous 1.35 to 3.09 now, and in some extreme blocks, the FSIs exceed 5 and even arrive at up to almost 9. That is what you can not find in Gothenburg now but can be found in vibrant cities.

This wedding pavilion is for ceremonies only and has a strong sense of memory. The site is located on the western coastline of Gothenburg, calmly standing on the hill and facing the sea. People stepped into this area can be touched deeply by the quiet, peaceful and timeless atmosphere. Therefore, our aim is using our design to strengthen the tranquility and brightness brought by the environment.

To achieve tranquility, we choose simple axisymmetric form without redundant details and decorations. This kind of abstract geometric shape have strong memorial quality and weaken the effect of time to reach a kind of timelessness. When you meet this building, you can focus on your mind, thoughts or memories without any disturbances. To achieve brightness, we use large glass curtain wall to bring the light and view in. In the distance, the great ocean stretches away to meet the sky, and the sky full of light jump down into the ocean.

[ Space & Movements ] The main space, that is the wedding hall, wedding stage and lavatories for guests, is located on the ground floor and fully accessible. These are the most public spaces, then up to the second (a second wedding hall) and the third floor (preparation room with a lavatory), the privacy increased. When analyses the environment, there is an axis connected the city and the sea, which is a critical part of the design. One of the main quality of city is rumbustious, so the sea is serene. Also, we can regard the city as reality then the sea as ideality. In this way, when the bride and the groom walk into this wedding pavilion, they come from the city to the sea, thereupon they put the rumbustious and passionate love down for a moment to embrace the serene love of marriage. Then finally they are announced to be together in front of their families and friends, they face to the reality of life but also keep the ideality of love in their mind.

Janus
Compound Form of A 'Kitschy Stool' Type: Fabrication Tutor: Daniel Norell, Stefan Svedberg Time: 01.2016 - 02.2016 (1 months) Location: Unspecified Category: Academic, Group work (partner: Amanda Elisason, Friederike Von Meissner, Carl Darenlind)

| 24
A compound form is characterised by two or several formal entities that partially but not fully coalesce into a larger whole. It does not attempt to smoothly absorb all differences, nor does it strive for fragmentation. Instead it attempts to create new characters and sensibilities by combining forms and materials into new, ambiguous entities. The task is to first choose some objects to make a compound object which is not figurative by cutting with curves or intersecting with each other. Second, choose another image to add character by giving it texture or colour. Finally, find a world for this compound form by making a collage.
[ Object & Character ] The theme of this project is a stool, but it do not need to be a stool for sitting. The members of our group decided to formulate a sort of kitschy thing by choosing some really figurative objects and combining them with extracted curves and make it abstract in the end. So the objects are robot and cat, which we call it robocat. By intersecting the two objects and cutting it with some piece of curves from the objects, the basic form is generated as a both figurative and abstract robocat. That is, from a certain points of view you can see the robot, and from another point of view you can see the cat, but from other points of view you can see neither of them which make it more abstract instead of figurative.
[ Process ]
Then we have chosen some abstract art images to add colours and textures to this compound form, made an original model by foam cutter as well as a final model with colours and textures on it by 3D printer. To learn how to use these digital tools is also the outcome of this course. The final world for the robocat is picked from a film. A women looked at this robocat with shocked and curiousness, and it seemed like this is something come from another world. The name of this project described what it would be like, Janus, who is regarded as having two faces, one to the future and the other to the past. This robocat is also, facing both figurative and abstract, or can be also described as both robot and cat.

This is a tension-structure located in the building of Architecture Apartment of Tsinghua University, aiming to attract people's attention to enter into the exhibition space in both sides of the lobby, which individuals seldom went through. The installation can be controlled by people and transformed when necessary. The aim is to create different spaces when there would be different activities in it and then individuals can have different feelings under this installation whether in spring, summer, autumn or winter.

The first step of our work was to find out some variable items. After observing the space and some activities in it, we discovered three groups of variable items, which are static and dynamic, public and private, hot and cool. These items have affected this space in different ways which on the contrary have different influences on individuals' feelings when come through this space. So we dicided to make a tension-structure installation with double transforming which can be controlled. Then we analysed the plan of this space in order to find out some points which can be the anchors to fix this installation.

This station design is located in a medium city. When it comes to a passenger station, I came up with the word "movie" in my mind, because I regarded the individuals' movements in the passenger station as a series of spots in a movie. So I focused on not only space but also the relationship between space and time in this design, and the NO.4 dimension here is "time". Accounting to individuals' movements I saperated the space into different types and it's just like the space changed with time went by and with passengers moving.

This design is located in our school, in the middle of the campus. When it comes to the theme "water conservancy" I have thought of the "dam", which is the representative of water conservancy in people's mind. In order to give an access to the good scenery from the lake, I broke the building into two parts, the bottom of it is exhibition area while the top of it is researching and studying area. In addition, I use some transparent materials and a kind of high-ref lection material to enable the building have a response to the nature.

The city is in the center of China and on the south of the Yellow River. Because of this, our university is famous for its water resource engineering, and at this new campus, managers is going to set a new building in the center of campus in order to exhibit the achievement of water resourse and also create space to study and research as well as communicate.

In winter, individuals would like to study or enjoy the excellent snowy scenery with friends inside this building.
Summer
In summer, people can enjoy their leisure time on the roof layer, where they can chat with friends or do some exercises.
The most important part of this building is the "middle layer", which belonging to both nature and building. People can regard this layer as a public platform and take activities or communicate with friends or just have a rest to away from the hustle and bustle of daily life on the greenland. On the top floor, people are able to overview the surroundings through the transparent glasswalls. While visiting the exhibition part on the ground floor, one can experience lights and shadows with time flies.

The aim of this project was to reconstruct a commercial street in Zhengzhou, so the first step was to choose one commercial street which should be reconstruct. We located it at a notable but old fashioned commercial market, which can be pulled down and rebuild because it is really disordered. The market has a large number of small shops owned by individual owners inside and invisible when looking from outside. So the purpose is to make the market to be a new and fashion one which can attract people's attention and come into it.

Among all the remarkable commercial street in the city, I chose one in the downtown, which also in a walking distance of the railway station. This area is famous for its shopping function and it is the window of the city. Although there are several commercial buildings here, one called Guangcai Shopping Market has drawn my attention because commodities here are really cheap so that too many people come here for shopping. But this market, dose not like other shopping mall, has a visiable buiding. There are only small shops which made by their owners. So the market is invisiable outside and disordered inside. That is why I'd like to creconstruct it.

to be rebuilt This area has a long history for shopping and because of this, it is too old-fashioned to attract more people. What I concieve is a new commercial area using some existing structure and other element.
[ Unit Pattern ] The umbrella structure is cable-membrane structure, in middle of which there is a column acting as the real structure and ouside is a kind of membrane material. On the top of the unit there is a hole which enable the sunshine to shine into the structure. 8m
The umbrella structure is made of eight kinds of patterns and two scales. The bigger one fit in the 8*8 network and a 6*6 network for the smaller one. These unbrellas cover almost all the stores under it and just acting as a traditional roof. However, the initial form of this market was outdoor stores, so it just looked like a roof, but actually not. It is still open to the public.

Movable Utopia

This is a high-rise residential design located in the most populous area of China. The main idea of this 'movable utopia' housing is to create a basic frame of the core structure and use prefab unit of different modules to be placed into the frame. People can customize their own apartment according to their family population status, for example, if a couple give birth to a baby they would probably want to have an extra room for their child. However, it is not realistic based on the current living condition in China, so that is why I call it 'utopia'.

Professional Work
Selected work in RSAA (Beijing) during Internship Type: Commercial, renovation Superviser: Zhuang Ziyu, Liu Yi Time: 07.2014 - 08.2014 Location: Tianjin, China Category: Professional, internship
This is a commercial renovation project I have particpated during my internship in RSAA (Beijing), where I worked as a design team number to express my thought and formulate different proposals. Located in the new district of Tianjin, this building would be developed into a appealling commercial center of this area. The original architecture were two seperate buildings and we made them into one building with an atrium as the core space for public. The appearance is also attractive and modern as its orientation.

It was a very interesting experience to work with two professional English carpenters along with other students. The Bee-Connected project is designed by White Arkitekter, cooperated with Chalmers. We assembled the units in workshop at Chalmers, then painted them with different yellow colours, and finally built the whole thing on site. The exhibition started from 4th June, 2016, on the Avenyn near Valand, then it scheduled to be moved to other cities in Sweden.
