SF JAZZ Octavia Center Location: San Francisco, CA Program: mix use of performance, education and residence Advisor: Tim Hickman and Paul Mankins Team Partner: Lu Wang Fall 2013 Located on Octavia Boulevard next to the Octavia Park, the project is an extension of SF JAZZ, a jazz music performance center that is two blocks away from the site. Instead of a pure performance center, SF JAZZ Octavia center is a mixed-use building complex. It consists of a 400-seat performance space, various kinds of studios, rehearsal rooms for education, and six residential units for visiting musicians.

Our site study is through a series analyses of the site traffic, site context, and the site culture. Impressed by the liveliness of the actively used Octavia Park, our goal is to bring people into the SF JAZZ Octavia Center through the multi-story lobby space at the intersection of Hayes Street and Octavia Boulevard and into an additional performance space that acts as a semi-public space below the main performance hall.

Site Plan
SF JAZZ Octavia Center
The back of the house (the service bar) is on the side of Linden Street, a quiet pedestrian-friendly alley with little traffic. The alley also connects and communicates between the two parts of the complex.
Commercial space on Hayes Street blends with the existing commercial storefronts and activities along it and has space for the temporary stores that used to occupy the site.
The lobby and the additional performance hall form a semi-public space that is an extension of the Octavia Park, which is an active public green space that hosts a rotating exhibit of local public artworks.
Repetitive columns and panels on the west facade reflect the rhythm of the bay windows that is a prominent feature of San Francisco. The alternation of solid and void reflects the privacy level of programs inside.

Exploded Diagram The installation running through the whole museum including the learning center is a multi-functional piece that acts as an interior partition, light holder, sound panels and sun shading in different locations of the building. The learning center is an open-to-public space and is separate from the main museum building with no ticketing control. The Sunken Sculpture Garden with outdoor exhibition, water feature, and green space is part of the outdoor experience of the museum and physically connects the main museum building and the learning center.

SOHO Residential Location: New York City Program: public, residential and educational Advisor: Ladan R Omidvar Spring 2011
In a historical site like SOHO, a new housing project should consider the urban context while accepting and celebrating the individuality of the residents. Like a community, groups of different people embrace their diversity together under a common atmosphere. Different hierarchy of public space should be incorporated into people’s lives.

Private residential units form 2 three-story segments that occupy level 3 to 5 and level 7 to 9 respectively with a semi-private floor only available to residents on level 6 that consists of a daycare center and 3 guest rooms. Most residential units are unique multi-story blocks interlocking with each other like “Tetris which enables horizontal circulation on the level 4, 7 and 9, creating more opportunities for residents to run into and be familiar with each other.

NEXUS Location: Kansas City, MO Program: installation with observation platform Advisor: Maria Miller Fall 2011
The “Nexus“ is a proposed structure that works as a “billboard” at the edge of City Market neighborhood to draw drivers’ and passengers’ attention along Highway I-35 in Kansas City, Missouri. The large scale structure is designed at the automobile scale, visible from a long distance and at high speeds..
