Message from the President

“Hope is a kind of rigor.” Aravind Adiga, the 2008 Man Booker Prize winner for The White Tiger A celebration of Menlo College graduates is both an opportunity to extend congratulations for the successful attainment of a college degree, as well as an expression of hope for our future. The 2020 pandemic is a generation-defining moment, and like every such moment that has gone before, it is how we respond that matters most. This year’s inspiring group of graduates possess intellectual curiosity and an active engagement with life and learning – qualities that are the goal of a Menlo College education. With their help, we will put our lives back together after this pandemic ends, and we will continue our individual and collective journeys. Our world will be better for their efforts. For all those who made today possible: family and other loved ones, friends, trustees, faculty, staff – we thank you for shepherding these graduates along this important path to reaching their dreams. We also honor the memories of those who contributed to today’s milestone, but who are no longer with us. Most importantly, we congratulate the graduates themselves on this joyous day. I want to extend my personal thanks for bringing your creativity, determination, and humor into my life. Today’s event marks the first time in more than 90 years that our community has been unable to gather on our campus to celebrate the conferring of college degrees to our graduating class. But the Menlo story for the Class of 2020 will not end with this virtual ceremony. When it is possible to do so, we will come together in person to complete the celebration. Meanwhile, my fervent wish is for all of you to stay safe and to stay healthy. In return, Menlo College will stay strong. Forever, Go Oaks! Welcome to the Menlo College 2020 Commencement.

Communi ty Me s s age Everyone who is part of the Menlo College community extends hearty congratulations to the Class of 2020 and to their families. We dearly wish we were gathered together beneath the oaks on the main quad today, but that was not to be. Know, though, that are thoughts are with you – today and into the future. We recognize that you, members of the Menlo Class of 2020, face a degree of uncertainty and challenge as few before you have faced because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our community will be there for you. We are all in this together. Collective congratulations to each and every one of you, from all Menlo College trustees, faculty, and coaches, trainers, advisors, and other staff. Thank you for the memories you have given us and the hope you have inspired.

2020 VAL EDICTORIAN — Lucrezia Povero ‘20

Hello, I am Lucrezia Povero, Lu, and I cannot fully express in words my gratitude for being this year’s valedictorian! I grew up in Cisterna d’Asti–a small town in Northern Italy. In my family, we are all pursuing the dream of our ancestors of carrying on Cantine Povero, our historic winery. My dad, Luca, taught me that only our mind sets the limits of what we can do. My beloved mum, Mary, who passed away during my sophomore year, taught me to be humble, friendly, and never forget my roots. My amazing sisters, Maury and Lety, showed me that there is not anything in life that we cannot handle. No matter what, no matter where, I know that my family will always be by my side. During my high-school years, I googled “how to study in the United States” and found a good scholarship from a prestigious school in the heart of Silicon Valley. My decision to study abroad initially startled my family, but they eventually supported me, and I will always be thankful to them. The diversity and open-mindedness of Menlo College has astonished me since my first semester in 2016. I made lifelong friends from all over the world. They helped me to grow and adapt to a foreign culture. During my college years, I benefited from several opportunities offered by Menlo. I was treasurer of the Culture Exchange Club, and was also a member of the WILD, Marketing, Sustainability, DECA, Outdoor Adventure, and Pioneer Clubs. I also had the privilege of being a runner for the Menlo College Cross Country and Track & Field teams, which taught me that discipline always pays off. However, during my junior year, I made one of the hardest decisions ever and left the teams to prioritize my academic and career objectives. Craving the need to expose myself to different cultures, I had aimed to be in charge of the export of Cantine Povero wine since I was a child. While studying, I promoted the wines of my family all over the United States. My desire for adventures led me to embrace an opportunity offered by the Menlo Study Abroad program and study a semester in Japan at Kansai Gaidai University. That incredible experience allowed me to study international business with a very different cultural perspective and to promote our winery in Japan and South Korea. In December 2019, I graduated with a double degree in International Management and Marketing. Since then, I have been working full-time on the export and marketing of Cantine Povero, and my first objective is to grow the American market and spend my time between Italy and the United States. 1

2020 SALUTATORIAN— Solin Piearcy ‘20

Hello, I’m Solin Piearcy. Most people call me “Sol,” my forever nickname which originated during my freshman year at Menlo. I find “Sol” extremely fitting as my experiences at Menlo enabled me to embrace and shine through any challenge that lies ahead of me. Born and raised in San Jose, Menlo has been a perfect place for me to pursue my higher education and wrestling goals while fortunately staying close to home. Towards the end of my senior year in high school, I signed to Menlo College’s Women’s Wrestling team, which was the only female collegiate wrestling program in California at the time. I was excited because I knew I was joining a team and community that have high aspirations with a strong family feel. Throughout my four years here at Menlo, I became a 4x All-American and 2x national women’s wrestling champion while helping the Women’s Wrestling team bring home Menlo’s first two national titles in a single season. I am also a Residential Assistant, Writing Center tutor, a member of the Alpha Chi and Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Societies, a recipient of the Richard O’Brien Award, and member of various clubs on campus. None of my accomplishments would have been possible without the help from staff, faculty, peers, and the wrestling family. Thank you, Menlo family, for all the support. And, the biggest thanks of all goes to my family– my parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and my beloved younger brother, Robert, who would all encourage and support me in person and at heart. While Menlo is small in size, Menlo’s spirit and opportunities are immeasurable. Menlo’s staple Career Connect Day and required business internship program have greatly prepared me for my journey into the workplace. While Menlo helped lay the foundation for my future, it also let me create unforgettable moments with my friends. I will forever cherish my memories of dancing in the adored annual lu’au, attending themed (especially karaoke) Tavern Nights, SGA and RA events, and OAKtoberFests. Menlo College is filled with people and cultures from all over the world. Our small community is close-knit, allowing us to learn and appreciate the diversity of others while making connections with each other that we possibly wouldn’t have made if we had not chosen Menlo. With the undying support of our Menlo community, staff, faculty, and students have collectively gained numerous and prestigious accolades. I will never be able to express enough gratitude to everyone who has helped me thrive while at Menlo. As a senior once again, but this time as a college student, I am excited to join Menlo’s Alumni family, and even more elated to celebrate an in-person graduation with my class of 2020 later in the future. As much as I am thrilled about what my future may hold, I am just as thrilled about the future of the entire OAK community. Thank you so much for all your help! Wishing you and your loved ones the best of health.

Student Govern e m e n t P R E SIDE NT — Ashlee Hunt ‘20

I grew up in Southern California with my amazing mother, Victoria and my older and younger siblings, Labrittney and Tyler, all of whom have supported me since day one in all my endeavors. I love animation, cartoons, fashion, and helping others. I grew up as a Girl Scout, to which I dedicated thirteen years of my life, from age five to age eighteen. This is where the seeds of empathy, leadership and teamwork were planted in my mind. I attended North High School, simultaneously studying at two different schools, and I graduated with a high school diploma and a four year certificate in Advanced Fashion Design. While Menlo wasn’t my first choice, I chose it primarily because of their business program and their size. As a Girl Scout alum, I yearned to find a tight-knit community which I could call family. I’d also been designing clothes for the past few years yet lacked the knowledge of how to create a business using my passion. Menlo opened my eyes to the possibilities outside of fashion and provided me with the space and knowledge to expand my options. Upon enrollment at Menlo, I was an introverted kid with a desire to make my mark. So, I made a promise to myself to take advantage of any and all opportunities that came my way. While I admittedly stretched myself thin over these last four years, I’d do it all again if it meant being where I am today. Just in my first semester at Menlo, I supported student engagement as a Student Union Activities Coordinator and stepped up as the President of Spectrum, Menlo’s safe space club for all LGBTQ individuals. It only went up from there. With recommendations from professors and encouragement from my now Menlo College alumni, I was simultaneously accepted into Stanford’s University Innovation Fellow program and elected as Student Government Club Coordinator. Both positions that strengthened not only my leadership skills but my ability to come out of my shell and effectively work in a team. This is where I really found my passion for helping others and where I began searching for more opportunities like this…most notably through the Student Government Association where I became of Director of Programming and then Student Government President. These were all positions where I was able to give back to the Menlo Community and advocate on behalf of the student body. While I don’t know what the future holds, I hope in my future career I’m able to make as big an impact as Menlo has made on me. 2

Hats Off to o u r g ra d uat e s — Abo u t t h i s p r o g ra m

In past years, graduating students of Menlo College have expressed their feelings about graduation by decorating their caps and proudly wearing them during the ceremony. This year, that's not possible. Instead, we asked graduates to decorate two-dimensional caps. Some are represented in this program. They will also be included in the next issue of Menlo Magazine, and posted on the Menlo website. Our greatest source of pride is our students and the creativity that is always on display, even in difficult times. The 2020 Menlo College graduates are listed on the following pages. Congratulations to one and all. The symbols used on the following pages are to designate the following:
