Commencement Program May 15, 2021

Message from the President

“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” Edward Everett Hale, Historian (1822-1909) Edward Everett Hale died over a century ago, but as we reflect on our journey through the Covid-19 pandemic, his words have resonance even now. While many of us still struggle with the fear, grief, and sense of missed opportunities that have been dominant themes throughout this period, the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel is at last visible. Our gathering today is itself an indication of progress. One year ago, our commencement celebration was held virtually; the Class of 2020 did not have the opportunity to enjoy the traditional walk across the stage to receive their college degree. It’s said that there are no re-dos in life, but by inviting last year’s graduates to join us in today’s celebration, we’re offering them the re-do that they so richly deserve. For the first time in our 94-year history, today we celebrate two graduating classes. Thus my congratulations are extended to the Class of 2020 and the Class of 2021. Neither class was afforded anything close to the college experience they had reason to expect in their last year as Menlo students. Despite all the challenges that came their way, though, they soldiered on, and their successful attainment of a college degree speaks to their resilience, as well as their determination to continue their individual journeys – something that should give all of us hope for the future. While we do not yet know the specific ways in which today’s graduates will make their marks in the coming years, we do know that their efforts will make the world a better place for all of us. To all those who made today possible: family and other loved ones, friends, trustees, faculty, coaches and other staff – thank you for shepherding these graduates along their path to reaching their dreams. We also honor the memories of those who contributed to today’s milestone, but who are no longer with us. And to today’s graduates, congratulations on this joyous day. Welcome to the Menlo College 2021 Commencement. And forever, Go Oaks!

Steven A. Weiner President of Menlo College

2 02 1 VALEDIC TOR IAN— Cosette Fitzgerald ‘21

I grew up in Capitola, California, a single child from working-class parents. I was diagnosed as autistic at an early age. While my public schools didn’t meet my needs, my parents’ support allowed me to access services that helped me see beyond myself and adapt to the neurotypical world. Beyond school, I loved the beach. I also loved to sing and was lucky to join two choirs as a high soprano; I’d love to go back to that someday. I’m someone who embodies the mantra “slow and steady wins the race.” After high school I went to West Valley College. In my spare time I worked part-time as a writing tutor and sang in the college choir. Menlo College was my first choice after I completed West Valley, and I was so happy to get accepted. It is a small tight-knit community with services like tutoring and the disability program that help so many students. Menlo has been a very welcoming environment. I love how passionate my classmates are and the extent to which they bring diverse experiences and backgrounds. I appreciate the friends I made along the way and I know they’ll do amazing things in the years to come. The faculty and staff have been extremely supportive, especially Mike Palmieri, Patty Lev, Lakiba Pittman, Jodie Austin, Melissa Michelson, and Emily Beitiks. I appreciate their wonderful instruction and all they contribute to Menlo. I pursued the CPA track, and motivated by my desire to be of service, I plan to work for a government agency after graduation. I also want to volunteer to help others get the opportunities I’ve been blessed to have. I want people to learn from my story: we cannot see what others are going through. My hard work and hardships are often invisible to those around me, and that has taught me the importance of patience, compassion, and open-mindedness. I have learned to be proud of my autistic self, and I want my disabled peers in and out of Menlo College to also be proud. We should not have to fit one mold in order to be seen, supported, and loved as human beings. 1

2 02 1 SALU TATOR IAN— Anna Schobel '21

Hello, I’m Anna Schobel, a psychology major. I lived in Munich, Germany for the first 19 years of my life. Coming to Menlo was a big change for me. I wasn’t used to being around so many extroverted people. It took me a while to get used to the different cultures here, but the Menlo community became my second home. I met so many amazing people from all over the world, and made countless memories that will stay with me forever. My time at Menlo was definitely busy; there’s always something to do here, and some place to be. My advice to someone coming to Menlo is to make use of all the opportunities and make time for adventures. We all deserve to give ourselves time off without feeling guilty. Coming to Dance Team practice and spending time with my teammates always put a smile on my face. Performing dances at basketball games and OAKtoberFests were highlights of my time at Menlo. Performing always made me nervous, but the more I stepped out of my comfort zone, the more confident I became in my dancing skills and in myself. COVID-19 took away some of our time together at Menlo. Yet I was able to return to campus after a few months in Germany, and I hope more students will be able to return soon and enjoy every aspect of life at Menlo. Even though online classes are not the same as in-person classes, I always enjoy learning about new things and different perspectives in class, no matter if virtual or in person. I am extremely grateful for the people who supported me at Menlo; my friends, the WILD club, my professors, my advisors, my coaches, the dean, the provost and all the other staff members who made my time here memorable. I’m not sure where life is going to take me, and I’m a bit nervous about leaving, but I know that Menlo prepared me for what’s about to come.

Student G o v e r n m en t P RE S I D ENT — Ian Martins '21

Aloha! My name is Ian Martins, the son of Alana Fernandez and Jody Martins, and brother of Victoria Martins. I came to Menlo four years ago from Maui, Hawai’i. I graduated from King Kekaulike High School, where I was an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) student, a National Honors Society inductee, and a four-year varsity volleyball player. I was also the 2017 class valedictorian. I navigated the journey from Maui to California on my own. As a bright-eyed freshman, I was inspired by all the possibilities that were before me in this new phase of my life. What impressed me the most about Menlo was how easy it was to connect with people, surrounded and embraced by a wonderfully diverse community. I knew right away that Menlo would be my home away from home. In my time at Menlo, I have been fortunate to have a string of terrific experiences, and have earned recognition along the way. I was a member of the inaugural men’s volleyball team; I served three consecutive years as an elected member of Menlo’s student government association in addition to the 2020-2021 Student Body President; I was an Academic Student Representative, Game Day Operator, Student Ambassador, Business Core Representative, and HR Club Partner; I completed two internships (as a Social Media Intern for the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, and as a Recruitment Intern at Friends for Youth); I’ve been on the Dean’s List since freshman year; I received the Al Jacobs Award for excellence in communications and literature; and I will soon be inducted into the Tri-Alpha Honors Society, which recognizes that I am the first in my family to obtain a bachelor’s degree. I will cherish all my experiences at Menlo and the relationships I’ve built with fellow students, faculty, and staff. My deepest gratitude to my Menlo family and especially to my ohana - parents, sister, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, close relatives, and friends for your endless love and support. To the Menlo College Class of 2021, let us enjoy this moment we’ve all been working toward. Congratulations on all of our many successes and those yet to come. Mahalo and E Ke Ku-lia I Ka Nu‘u (thank you and let us strive to reach the summit)! 2
