LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Congratulations on the publication of the very first issue of “Men’s Living” which was passed onto me recently by an exstudent of mine. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Winter/ Spring 2011 issue. You have put together a very professional magazine and the articles were of great variety and interest. I especially enjoyed reading the articles on the Hi-Five (with its associated theory and protocols!) and Positive Thinking. It is heartening to read of young, enthusiastic journalists such as yourself getting a new magazine established and ‘on the shelves’ - well done! Best wishes for the success of “Men’s Living” - I can’t wait for the next issue! Brother Nicholas Harsas Thank you Brother! We will not let you down!

YOGA in praise of the soul and body words: Sheree Jenkins

W

hen we fail to listen to our bodies we get disorientated and lose sight of what it is that made us happy in the first place. This can lead to pressures causing stress that feeds diseases, chronic illness and ultimately deteriorating our mind.

Y

our soul is the reflection of your body. By abusing your body you are poisoning your soul, which in turns abuses your mind. Obtaining your reason to a healthy body is the cure to a healthy lifestyle choice. Many have turned to Yoga as a cure. It is known as “the art of living” with the ultimate aim of spiritual healing and self-understanding. It uses a combination of physical strength and mental meditation, curing the mind and purifying the soul whilst building a fit and strong body. Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word “Yuj” which means to yoke, unite, or link. This entails the unification of the body and mind, with a deeper spiritual connection to the soul in an eventual linkage of the individual with the supreme. An asana is a posture held during yoga. It is practiced by maintaining many difficult poses that require immense core strength, flexibility and mental concentration. There are a myriad of benefits on the body and mind by practicing yoga regularly.

16

MensLiving.com.au

Mental Focus This is the connection of the body to the mind. By having mental strength to hold an asana, you move your mind into a meditative state. This process is not very easily attained. Through commitment to hold each of the asanas, you bring clarity to your mind with emotional stability. It stimulates and uplifts the physical, mental and spiritual state of a human being. Holding an asana improves the body’s immune system, blood circulation, as well as lowering cholesterol levels and helps the body to relax and revitalize.

been known to bring out emotions at a later time when practised for awhile, varying from person to person. These emotions may be the pent up frustrations of an earlier childhood episode, or some anger or fear from a recent memory. By possibly drawings out these emotions, yoga can bring closure to various poignant events. Vivienne Dias, founder of YogaVibe says “While men are often the most resistant to yoga, they often have the most to gain. Combining stretches and resistance exercises in yoga are designed to increase muscular strength, flexibility, improve concentration, reduce stress and bring overall balance into their life.”

Yoga has also attracted many interesting people over strange accidents. Megadeth singer and guitarist Dave Mustaine has eschewed the extreme partying life Keith, who has been doing yoga since 2002 when he damaged the for over 16 years says, “There nerves in the left arm when he fell eventually becomes a gradual balance of the mind and body, and asleep in a chair. Combining stretches and resistance exercises in yoga are designed to increase muscular strength, flexibility, improve concentration, reduce stress and bring overall balance into their life.” Dave says, “I do yoga, a lot of yoga. I’m doing a lot of healthy things - which I know seems like a dichotomy, for a rock star to be taking care of himself.”

T

here are a few different styles of yoga including Hatha, Iyengar and Bikram. All styles engage and stimulate the internal organs, and results in an increased level of mental concentration. Although different styles may suit an individual’s character finer, they are merely different methods for reaching the same supreme goal. Each asana is designed to engage certain organs such as the digestive or lymphatic system. Because yoga works on different levels, it can help treat chronic diseases such as Down Syndrome. Children with mental disabilities of this type have been known to respond well with communication and cognitive skills after practicing yoga frequently. Nanak has taught disabled children for many years which he believes benefits disabled children considerably.

“Yoga teaches children to develop their balance and concentration, and equanimity in their daily lives. Their parents are always noticing the difference in their behaviour as they become calmer after practicing yoga for awhile”.

Modern day scientists have proven the benefits of meditation directly linking it to a healthy body. Yoga is one form of meditation which can cause a sense of well-being and offer a healthy and fit lifestyle. We at ML HQ, after practicing yoga regularly for three months would recommend to all our readers to give yoga a try. It cleanses your health, tranquilizes your mind and brings a new energy to your life, thereby creating an inner serene consciousness to a happy lifestyle. >> Be true to yourself. Every one of us has a profile of basic human needs that need to be fulfilled, both now, and in the future. Meet these needs and we feel satisfied, happy; we feel pleasant in some way. Don’t meet them and we can feel anything from discomfort to outright emotional pain and misery. By fulfilling these needs we are being true to our self. We can achieve this by: >> Learning to understand and recognise our basic human needs. Our basic human needs can be summarised into needs of Self, Family, and Community. Fulfilling your needs of Self (Personal Self) keeps you physically and mentally well as an individual in your own right. The needs of Family (Family Self) are those of having and being part of a family and are gender specific once we reach puberty; men and women have different Family Self needs. The needs of Community (Community Self) are needs of friendship, mateship, social interaction; the human need of finding safety and security among others of our kind. >> Facing the pains and discomforts that represent the human needs and desires in your life you are not meeting, rather than trying to run away from them, trying to suppress or ignore them, or trying to escape them. When our needs are not met, or we anticipate they will not be met, we feel associated pain or discomfort. We would rather ignore, cover, or escape our pains, than face them; we tend to take a path of least resistance. We can escape our pains in many ways: by avoiding them, escaping into dreams, into media, computer games, books, movies, shopping, travel, alcohol, etc. But can we realistically expect our pains to leave us if the needs that drive them are not fulfilled? It is hard

to change what we aren’t first prepared to face and see. >> Making the time to listen to your deep inner feelings every day, or at least several times a week. Quiet time, to listen to what ‘you’ think and feel so you can better understand your needs and develop a practical strategy of how to fulfil them. People influence us every day, mostly without us even being consciously aware of it. They influence us to be the person we ‘think’ we should be. With time we can stop listening to our desires and needs and try to fulfil desires and needs we ‘think’ we should have. Clearly these are not our personal desires and needs and will not fulfil us. Quiet time is time to get to know ‘you’, the true you deep inside, that knows your personal needs and what you need to do to meet them. It is also another part of you less corrupted by others. Once you know what is missing in your life – not what you ‘think’ is missing – you can develop a realistic practical plan that feels honest and true to fulfil it. Listening to the true inner you requires regular quiet time. >> Balancing your time every day and every week between Self, Family, and Community. In the end, creating self-balance is about balancing our time. What percentage of your time is spent caring for your Self, Family, or Community Self needs? Which is more important, your work – a Community Self pursuit – or your family? Your family or yourself? Yet if we aren’t the healthiest we can be, what are we offering of our self to our partner, to our children, or our friends and work colleagues? Find a sustainable fulfilling balance of our time between Self, Family, and Community, and we can finally claim to have achieved a balance of self.

TIME TO FLATTEN THOSE WINTER KILOS

Flat Belly Food 1: Peanuts Peanuts of all types are rich in protein with essential vitamins and minerals. They also contain the good type of fats called monounsaturated fats which help to maintain and promote a healthy heart. Studies have shown eating a handful of nuts a day will cut the risk of heart disease by up to 50%. Our advice is to eat as many types of peanuts as you can find, such as walnuts, hazelnuts, pistachios and macadamia nuts. Peanuts help regulate hormones and are protein powerhouses providing 15% of the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI).

This winter season could’ve seen you put on the layers, and we’re not talking about clothes. To get those winter kilos off, Nutritionist Lilaeia Nymphaea says, “Eating the right balance of foods is the key to weight loss”. ML Personal Trainer Tek Thai, states that “Most men who exercise regularly may already have their abdominal muscles in good strength, just not visible through the layer of stomach fat. Men need to obtain approximately 10-12% below body fat to expose their abs, whereas women need to get below

15-18%, all depending on body fat distribution.”

Blueberries contain high levels of manganese which helps to promote the development of bone structure and in the metabolism of protein, fat and carbohydrate. They are also an excellent source of dietary fibre which reduces heart disease and cholesterol. Acaiberries, one of the later discoveries in the berry family has been given great hype by the media in recent times. Acaiberries are high in fibre and antioxidants, which help to eliminate free radicals in

the body. Free radicals circulate in the air we breathe and foods we eat which enter our bodies and attach to our tissues causing mutilation to our cells. Antioxidants neutralise these free radicals thereby reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancers.

We all know the dangers associated with being overweight, including increased risk of heart disease, some types of cancer and dementia. If you can eat the foods listed below on a weekly basis, this will help to ensure a flatter belly this summer with you feeling great and full of energy (as long as you stay away from those pizzas and minimise your barbeque intake).

Peanut Eating Tips: Peanut Butter is yummy to most people! But for those who don’t like peanut butter, try snacking on peanuts, throwing them into your next pot of soup or chopping them into your salad!

Flat Belly Food 2: Berries

Freshly picked berries can be like Christmas in your mouth. “Strawberries are naturally sweet and are a high source of Vitamin C, which help to support a strong immune system and strengthen body tissues”, Lilaeia believes. Strawberries, in times of history were a symbol of peace and prosperity and served at important gatherings and parties during medieval times. Medieval stone masons used to carve strawberry icons on top of pillars and altars to symbolise perfection and virtue. A cup of strawberries alone can give you 100mg of vitamin C, with very low fat and calories to grin about.

Berry Eating Tips: Pour berries with your next yoghurt, or blend into a smoothie for a delicious creamy texture.

NUTRITION ML

Flat Belly Food 4: Beans Flat Belly Food 3: Carrots The longest carrot ever grown is over 5.7 metres! Carrots, being a good source of vitamin A are responsible for distinguished eye sight, and a path to healthy and vibrant skin. Carrots are the highest sources of beta carotene, which the body translates into vitamin A. Raw carrots have very dense cellular walls, eating them raw only allows the body to consume less than 25% of carotene. For the body to extract the maximum carotene, it is best to cook carrots whole, then sliced into smaller pieces as this breaks down the cell membranes exposing maximum nutrients for the body to absorb the carotene. Studies have shown that 7 ounces or 200 grams of carrots every day for three weeks reduces cholesterol by 11 per cent. Carrot Eating Tips: Carrot Soup sprinkled with coriander!

Beans have made it into one of the most versatile food list, with strong conviction. From salads, dips and baked styles of servings, beans are full of nutrition and fibre. Not only do they reduce strokes and heart related problems, they are also cheap and tasty. A cup of beans will give you approximately one third of your RDI of fibre, helping you to lose weight and promote blood circulation. They are also rich in magnesium, making your heart and bones resilient and tough. Bean Eating Tips: Taco Snack – blend some fat reduced sour cream with salsa and beans layered over your choice of salad and baked tortilla chips!

ML NUTRITION

Flat Belly Food 6: Whole Grains If you’re not big on whole grains, that’s okay. Because the good news is that it’s just as nutritious and high-packed in fibre as fruits and vegetables. Here’s the low down: whole grains consists of three parts – endosperm, germ and bran. During the refinement process of whole grains into flour and white rice, the germ and bran are removed, leaving only the endosperm behind. This process causes a loss of major nutrients such as trace minerals, vitamin B, vitamin E, fibres and phytochemicals. Grainy foods are low in the Glycemic Index (GI), making you feel less hungry, for example, after consuming two sandwiches made of whole grain bread, as opposed to three sandwiches made of white bread. Whole Grain Eating Tips: Try a serving of whole grain breakfast cereal, or substitute half of your white flour with whole wheat flour in your muffin and pancake recipes. Another popular dish is mixing brown rice with white rice, or throwing in some barley on your next rice mission!

22

MensLiving.com.au

Flat Belly Food 5: Dairy Think cows and milk. Think calcium and healthy bone growth and structure. That’s what dairy can do. Tek recommends that, “dairy products should be taken on a daily basis as they are essentially full of vitamins and minerals and loaded with an abundance of calcium.” Milk and other dairy products contain a good balance of fat, carbohydrate and protein with many crucial nutrients including vitamins A, D and B12, phosphorous, riboflavin and pantothenic acid. There is a myth that you should restrict your dairy intake while dieting. Moderate consumption of dairy foods helps to reduce chances of osteoporosis and colon cancer as dairy is an essential calcium source and lack of this mineral ultimately leads to nutrient deficiency. Hence, there is no need to renounce drinking milk. Dairy Eating Tips: Cheeses, yoghurt and milk, all in moderation!

NUTRITION ML

Flat Belly Food 7: Spinach Spinach - one of the mightiest super foods available to man! It has many essential amino acids and trace elements fuelling the body to be an efficient energy machine. Not only is it packed with nutrients including magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, manganese, carotenes, folate, vitamins A, B complex, C, E, K, it is also an exceptional source of chlorophyll. “Chlorophyll is responsible for the green pigmentation in plants. It extracts energy from the sun and smoothes the progress of photosynthesis in plants, providing growth, development and respiration, says Tek (who loves spinach). Chlorophyll has a very similar chemical composition to that of human blood, where the primary atom in chlorophyll is magnesium, while iron is the primary atom in human blood. To obtain the optimum nourishment from spinach, it is best eaten raw. Spinach has oxalic acid which is organic and has physiological benefits to the body. Cooking spinach turns these oxalic acids inorganic and restricts the absorption of calcium and iron. Spinach Eating Tips: Juice it! Use it to decorate your sandwiches and salads! If you really want

Flat Belly Food 8: Green Tea Throughout the ages, green tea has been consumed across the continents of China, Japan, and India. In traditional Chinese medicine, nutritionist and doctors have used green tea as a stimulant to help promote heart health and regulate body temperature and mental awareness. Green Tea contains a very potent antioxidant called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG impedes the growth of cancer cells without harming healthy tissues and helps blood circulation. The reason why green tea has healthpromoting genes is because the leaves are processed via a steaming method which prevents the EGCG compound from being oxidized. Other teas such as black tea and oolong are made from fermented leaves, which consequently transform the EGCG to other amalgams. EGCG is about 25-90 times more powerful than vitamins C and E and has antioxidant effects to neutralise free radicals which contribute to tissue and cell damage. Green Tea Drinking Tips: Two cups a day for a year will reduce cognitive defacement by 50%. A large cup of green tea with a generous squeeze of lemon may aid hangover ailments after a big night!

has written, studied and researched for over 30 years on business, psychology, economics and philosophy. He has produced over 300 audio and video learning programs, including the worldwide best-selling Psychology of Achievement, which has been translated into more than 20 languages. Having founded Brian Tracy International, Brian has had an abundance of successful careers in real estate, sales and marketing, distribution and management consulting. Not to mention being fluent in four languages, worked on six continents in over 80 countries. Brian speaks to public audiences and corporations on the development of self-esteem, strategy, selling, leadership and success psychology to enhance immediate changes. His recipe to achieve great things in life begins with having the right mindset - what we here at Men’s Living truly believe and wish to empower all our readers to obtain. It begins with…

When you feel good about yourself, you feel like you could rule the world. Having a positive self-concept of yourself is vital, as what you feel inwardly about yourself, you project outwards. Brian states we were given an awesome human machine, but unfortunately it came with no instruction manual. We need to learn how to use our human machines to optimise our lives for purpose and fulfilment. His six requirements for success include:

Peace of mind

High levels of health and energy

No matter what we have or what we do in life, we will not be satisfied without high levels of health and energy. What good is financial freedom, with poor health and zero energy? Men’s Living concurs, and we say “get fit, stay healthy and be awesome!”

Loving relationships

This is the ability to enter and maintain long lasting loving relationships. From studies of psychology, it is the hallmark to fully self-actualise in a human being (Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs).

This is the complete sense of peace within

Financial freedom

If it’s to be, it’s up to me!

yourself, and having ultimate freedom from fear, anger and guilt – the three major psychological problems people face today.

Brian states this is about having enough money so we don’t have to worry about money. For some this may mean $40,000 a year in passive income, for others $200,000 may not be enough. The goal is to not be pre-occupied with money.

Worthy goals and ideals

As human beings, we are not capable of functioning correctly without goals. When we have goals, we have a clear vision on what we want, and our subconscious starts to work to achieve it.

ELEVATION ML After studying writers and extensive philosophy, Brian believes “Man’s need for meaning and purpose is the greatest single drive in human nature.”

Feeling of personal fulfilment This is becoming everything we are capable of as human beings - fulfilling our full potential (Men’s Living highly advocate this). Brian superbly words, “Sense of actualisation is the hallmark of the truly mature functioning human being.”

Program youself for success

2) Accept responsibility and take charge!

Sometimes, it’s so much easier to blame other people. We can simply say, “If it weren’t for my boss, I could be so much more...” Oprah Winfrey is also a strong advocate of taking responsibility for all your actions and your life. She says, “You are responsible for your life... You are responsible for the energy that you create for yourself, and you’re responsible for the energy that you bring to others.” Brian also states, “If it’s to be, it’s up to me!” When we stop blaming everyone in our lives for the mishaps in our past, we can move forward. This means if you have any blame for anyone, including your parents, family members, and friends and so forth, our negative emotions will stop us from progression. By asserting to ourselves that, “I am responsible”, we have ultimate control over our thoughts, emotions and our destiny.

3) Programming for success Firstly, you have to let go of the past. Then form new thought patterns and develop new habits to act in a manner

consistent with the person you would like to be. By visualising the ideal person you want to be, you magnetically draw the situations and people into your life to reach your vision. By eliminating destructive beliefs and constantly thinking about what you want, and acting upon those thoughts and beliefs, you empower your future to real life.

4) Goals and goal achieving

When you set a goal into your life, you have a purpose and are driven to achieve it. We naturally encounter obstacles in our path when we set out to achieve our goals;

When you set a goal into your life, you have a purpose and are driven to achieve it

however nothing great was ever achieved without constancy in purpose. We all have our talents and we should harness the energy in our talents to achieve, be and do great things in our lives. “Desire is a great motivator”, Brian says. “Setting goals and thinking about them continuously raises our self-image, moves us towards our self ideal, causes us to like ourselves and moves us toward peak performance and the full realisation to our full potential.”

5) Creative problem solving and decision making

This is my personal favourite. Brian talks about the “super-conscious mind”. Within us contain untapped reserves of creativity that we have to solve problems with ultimate solutions. The superconscious mind works at its best when we are concentrating completely or when we are not thinking about something at all. Believe in your own super-conscious mind that you are able to plug into it at

will to solve your problems and achieve your goals. Obstacles only appear when you set a goal. Brian says, “The clearer and more precise your goals are and the more committed you are to accomplishing them, the more rapidly the super-conscious capability will work to attain them.”

6) Superior human relations

“An individual has a healthy personality to the degree to which he can get along with the greatest number of different types of people”, Brian says. The better we are at communicating with other people, the better human relations we will have. Listening with intent builds trust between two people, as the person talking feels that their opinions and ideas are being valued. When we make others feel good, we feel good. Gentlemen (and our indirect lady readers), when we purposefully go through life with the intention to raise other peoples selfesteem about themselves, our own sense of sense-esteem automatically rises. Start developing superior human relations and your life will exponentially grow, as Brian believes the purpose of life is to develop loving relationships... self actualisation within oneself.

Believe in your own super conscious mind

The deltoids are a secondary muscle that are built-in for supporting the rest of the arm. If you want to wear that sleeveless singlet in style, then solid deltoid muscles is what you need. When your biceps and triceps wear out during training, it’s the deltoids that keep them together as a party. The deltoids operate to endure great lifting power to your body, so keep them happy.

DELTOID

HEALTH ML Say two words, “huge guns” or “massive cannons” and men will think of the biceps. Needing triceps to make your arm size, you also need developed biceps to really stretch those strings of muscles. Flexing your biceps with pride may be a common exercise at the gym, and it was definitely an exercise you did at your first visit. Define your arms, define your biceps.

BICEPS

BEARING ARMS

The deadliest weapons in the world are the GUNS you were born with. Did we mention beer in our hands? Well, this is very important then, because its main task is to open and close your hand. Very handy muscle to be friends with when you need to refresh yourself with another bottle of beer, or add more weights to your bar.

BRACHIORADIALIS

TRICEPS

FOREARM FLEXOR

FOREARM EXTENSORS This is simple. Want a strong grip? The secret is in the forearm extensors! Work these muscles out and you’ll have a stronger grip than Rambo with three machine guns. The triceps account for more than 60% of your upper arm muscles. The stronger your triceps, the more authoritative and imposing your upper arms will be! A consequential group of muscles, they support every chest, shoulder and arm exercise. Every ounce of this magazine commands that you look after your triceps.

SHOULDER ROOM

TRICEP TRIPLES

BICEP MOUNTAINS

FOREARM BRACHEXAMINATION ANAYLSIS

When your arms are engaged and your biceps and triceps are fatigued, your shoulders pick up the slack. Think about a boxer who holds up his arms in defense while at the same time throwing punches. The shoulders give the rest of the arm full support in mobility, strength and power. Strong arms are a result of strong shoulders.

Your awesome triceps consists of three muscles - the medial, the long head, which support the main lateral head. If you want to know the secret to having huge looking arms, then its right here – get those cannons to fire off big guns. Work on your triceps, and they will fill the sleeves of your shirts even if they are sleeveless.

Where there is no way to go, the only place is up! The secret to developing huge mountains of power is to work the bracialis muscle. This is one of two muscles that make up the bicep, the other being the brachia.

We have two arms for a reason, and that reason is because we use them for everything (no pun intended) – from holding a beer in our hands, to holding a hammer. Not only do they facilitate the spinning of your wrist, but they’ll help you hang like an ape (see Rise of the Planet of the Apes – awesome movie).

When you want to let go of that 100 kilo bar, it’s these little babies that do the job. They are the muscles that let magicians look cool with their magic tricks as they gesticulate their fingers in the air. In summary, they move your fingers.

So, back to weight (or beer) lifting – you need your forearm extensors to grip (beer bottles or dumbbells – whichever you prefer), and your brachioradialis to release and grab. Because you use your brachioradialis every day, it’s a challenge to make it grow. The secret is to ensure that the muscle has a great hold and can hanlde every day pressure.

FLEXOR CENTER This is the muscle that lets you rotate those curls when you’re lifting bars above your head like a champion weight-lifter. They start from the bottom of each finger and run all the way to the humerus. The thumb has the most muscles of the five fingers on your hand. Our opposable thumbs are the reason for the development of humans.

Heart disease – killer of men Stay heart healthy through the years

Most healthy men don’t think of themselves as a possible statistic, until they become one. The truth is most men become one at the hands of heart disease, a prime killer of men. A few lifestyle changes can make all the difference in preventing heart problems before they start. Read on to learn what you can do today to change your life tomorrow. by Camille Hinchcliffe

workout a day keeps the doctor away. Exercise is a sure fire way to keep that ticker strong and healthy. Thirty minutes of exercise five times a week is all you really need. That half an hour can establish a lifetime of benefits to include maintaining your ideal weight and importantly, your cholesterol levels. Going to the doctor regularly is another way to ensure your heart is on track and operating as expected. Visit your doctor annually to receive a physical examination. During the exam, your blood pressure will be taken. Normal blood pressure is 119/79 mm Hg or lower. Be sure to know your family history so the doctor can ascertain if you are at a greater risk, and may possibly need to be screened

32

MensLiving.com.au

Regular check ups with your doctor is a smart thing to do for peace of mind on good health. Discuss the results with your doctor and find out when you should return for another exam and if any lifestyle changes are needed. Consult your doctor before beginning a new exercise regimen if you have heart problems.

more often. By the age of 18, start getting an annual blood test. Your blood test should include, at the very least, a lipid profile, which requires fasting, and a cholesterol levels evaluation. Your LDL should be below 130 mg/dL and your HDL 40 mg/dL. For your lipid profile, your triglycerides should be less than 150 mg/dL. More testing may be necessary if you are an athlete or lift weights several times a week. One test is an echocardiogram, which is when the heart is examined via an ultrasound. The exam can detect many heart abnormalities such as a silent aneurism, dilated cardiomyopathy (when the heart gets stretched too large or thin) or a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (when the heart muscle grows too much). Want a longer life? Quit those cigarettes and reduce those wonderful glasses of beer. It’s tough, but a longer life means shorter periods of beer consumption.

Tests You Shouldn’t Take Lightly

Tests may make you stressed and reminiscent of primary school, but you shouldn’t put them off. As you age, more extensive testing may be needed. When you hit or get closer to 30, you should schedule a echocardiogram if you haven’t already had one. If you have, make sure it is within 10 years. Most heart problems can be traced back to your family history. Just because they didn’t show up in your 20s doesn’t mean you’re completely safe.

I

f you are 35 or older, an electrocardiogram (EKG) may be necessary as well. This should be done every five years. An EKG measures the electrical waves within the heart. This exam shows if there are any problems with blood flow or blood clots. If caught early enough, you may be able to delay the onset of or prevent heart disease altogether. At 40, staying healthy and taking care of yourself becomes more important than ever. More tests and evaluations are needed, and the best way to ensure they come out with healthy results is being in shape, eating right and maintaining a healthy weight. A C-reactive protein (CRP) test should be done in addition to your annual blood test. The higher your CRP level, the more at risk you are of developing cardiovascular disease. Your CRP level should be less than 1 mg/L. When you turn 50, be ready for an exercise stress test or treadmill test. It shows your physician how well your heart functions. During the test, your doctor will monitor your blood pressure and the electrical activity of your heart. The harder your body works, the more oxygen it requires. In order to receive more oxygen, your heart must be capable of pumping more blood. This test is very important because age 50 is when some men begin showing signs of coronary heart disease. These results will show any blockage of coronary arteries. If you have a family history of heart disease, you may want to schedule a stress test sooner. Another warning sign to rush to the doctor’s office is the onset of any chest pain, light-headedness or if you experience shortness of breath or heart palpitations.

Don’t wait until it’s too late to get your heart checked out.

Prevention is Key

Often, men don’t know they have heart disease until they have a heart attack. You should get annual assessments and blood tests, along with other tests, to ensure you have nothing to worry about. Speaking of worrying, stress is the underlying cause of about one-fifth of all heart attacks globally. It can also cause coronary artery disease. So, even if it turns out there’s an issue with your heart, don’t stress about it. Talk to

your doctor about what you can do to minimise your risks of having further complications. The consensus of most doctors is that while they may not be able to prove 100 percent that stress causes heart attacks, learning stress management techniques is still beneficial. Start yoga, meditation or even try therapy. These methods lower blood pressure and can help you relax.

Quit Smoking and Drink Less In addition to stressing less, do not smoke cigarettes or drink excessive amounts of alcohol. Smoking lowers

HDL cholesterol levels. It is also responsible for about 20 percent of all deaths from heart disease. If you are at greater risk of developing heart disease, your doctor may also suggest taking aspirin daily or may prescribe statins (used to lower cholesterol). Even with proper diet and exercise, it may still be possible to have high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Annual check-ups and knowing your family history are vital and can save your life. Prevention is key, so schedule an appointment to see your doctor now. High Octane Knowledge Of All Things Masculine

LL: Tell us a little about you currently do. CL: Many people these days are simply overwhelmed with all the things that they have to deal with and remember every day – information overload! I help people tackle this common and growing problem by showing them how to save time and get more done each day. I do this by focusing on a small number of simple yet highly effective memory and reading techniques which anyone can quickly learn and start to apply in their everyday life. What’s more, it’s fun to show people the power of their memory. You can remember much more than you think, such as people’s names or business information, if you just use some simple, straightforward techniques. LL: How did you get into this position? CL: As a student going in to my final year at Uni I was struggling with the huge volume of information I was expected to learn and remember. Fortunately, I came across a book all about memory techniques which I read and then started to apply. I was surprised to find that the techniques actually worked really, really well and this helped me immensely. Indeed this sparked an interest in other techniques such as speed reading and other ways to get things done in a fraction of the usual time.

A

fter graduating I started work as a management trainee for a large transport group in the UK. Over the next 10 years I progressed to a senior executive level working for a number of large companies here in Australia. Over the years I continued to develop and use more techniques, particularly in work situations, to get better results and save time. What increasingly struck me was that the techniques I was using were very effective they definitely helped my career progression! - yet were overlooked and underused by most ordinary business people. And so in 2004 I set up Gloo The Memory Company and started showing others how they too can read faster, remember more and achieve better results. Since then I’ve run hundreds of workshops around Australia helping thousands of people to realise more of their hidden talents. LL: What’s the tricks or methods you use to memorise 4,000 numbers? CL: The quick answer is that we are very good at remembering things that we see - visual recall. So most memory techniques use this simple idea to help us

remember information more easily. In terms of numbers, there is a specific technique which turns abstract, meaningless numbers into memorable pictures. These pictures can then be linked together and stored in a mental filing system such as your daily journey from home to work. Sounds strange, but it’s very straightforward and works exceptionally well as people who join us at our public workshops discover. LL: How do you teach a dog to read? CL: Dogs can read, so says Bonnie Bergin, a mutt guru and author of the snappily titled “Teach Your Dog To Read”.

I

must admit that at first I thought the idea was more than just a little far fetched but it turns out that Ms Bergin isn’t completely bonkers after all. And having flicked though the first few chapters of her paradigm-shifting book, the process appears remarkably similar to how we humans learn to read - by recognising patterns to which we then associate meanings, usually in the form of pictures. (Remember at school stringing together the letters A-P-P-L-E while being shown a picture of a big red shiny err… apple?). The book contains stepby-step instructions and helpful tips and explanations that even humans can understand. So I’m going to have a crack at it. This year will be the year that Mambo (Chris’s dog) learns to read. Perhaps just light fiction to start, like the odd newspaper but if all goes well I’m hoping he’ll develop a real appetite for books, just like when he was a puppy. LL: Any other famous tips? CL: Keep things simple. We often make things overcomplicated. Although your brain is an incredibly powerful thing it actually likes things to be nice and simple. Which is why many of the techniques we focus on are so effective – they’re simple, quick to learn and easy to apply. Many people are surprised that they can increase their reading speed and boost their memory for people’s names in just one day or even less. It all comes down to knowing the right techniques, doing a little bit of practice and having some fun! LL: What do you eat for breakfast every morning to power that awesome brain? CL: (laughs) Wholemeal toast, high fibre cereals, complex carbohydrates, lots of fish, flaxseed oil, omega 3, 6 and 9 capsules, and everything to keep my energy levels up. Visit www.gloo.com.au to attend Chris’s workshop - The Hidden Advantage. I’ve done it, and I remember it was brilliant. Now I just have to start on these numbers... 1, 2, 3, 4, ...... 4000! 20 REASONS TO BE INSPIRED BY MUSIC Brought to you by the Editor.

Towards the end of your adolescence years you envisioned yourself to move out with your high school sweet heart and ride off into the sunset to live happily ever after. Little did you know that the universe would punch you in the face with a force that knocks a big burst of reality into you. You realise that you and your high school sweet heart are not compatible, your wallet is not as big as you thought, and how are you suppose to party like a rockstar when your part time job barely pays the rent, which doesn’t even include utility bills. As we grow older we make one adjustment after another in order to meet financial stability. There is always an unexpected turn or should we say 'surprises', like the pregnant girl with your baby, the elusive drugs you just discovered, or the fact that you actually have to work real hard to be the best. It often cost us a dream or two and we forget about some of the things we wanted to do like becoming rockstars, climbing mountains, chasing supermodels, jumping out of aeroplanes, sleeping with two women at the same time, or even the simple things in life like learning to play the guitar. Through these tough times there has always been one thing you can count on, and that’s MUSIC! Songs that give you the power to elevate your mind, your body and ignite the passion within your soul. ML presents the top 20 songs we deem to be fully inspirational. The criteria for this playlist goes like this: It has to hit you hard, it needs to evoke feelings of inspiration, nostalgia, triumph, winning, moving mountains and fly kicking brick walls.

Also, it is not necessary, but sporting hot chicks can help.

ML INTEL 1. Crowded House - Don’t Dream It’s Over It was the very last song they rocked at the Sydney Opera House before they disbanded, the stage presence was so immense you couldn’t helped but sing along with tears of joy. The song is about a lover telling his partner that there will be obstacles facing them, and as it drives a wedge between them, they will need to believe in each other, “don’t let them win” and never “dream it’s over”.

4. Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music The story goes that they started out in a funk club, but they were a rock band. When they got up on stage and played rock, people would leave, so the manager of the club said “play that funky music white boy”, or they would be fired. The next night when they were on stage, they played this track for the first time, it was an immediate hit and as fate

played song in karaoke bars. The piano and guitar is used to deliver a build up that makes you cough out your heart. This song is about those who are just about to give up on love or life and it is saying “don’t stop believing”, there’s faith somewhere out there. Whether you are searching for yourself or some kind of connection with a stranger you have to go out and find it. “Some will win, some Debby Wong / Shutterstock Images

2. Bon Jovi - It’s My Life Wake up every morning to this song and live life the way you want to. If you “don’t bend or break or never back down”, then you can live life your own way, “like Frankie said, ‘I did it my way’” referencing Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.” Both songs are about living life to the fullest, and let’s face it - this song is the ultimate scream to live life. If you want a song that will man you up and take away the whingy voice that makes you too chicken to take a chance then remember “luck ain’t even lucky, got to make your own breaks!” 3. Tina Turner & Jimmy Barnes - Simply The Best What can be more inspiring than Barnes’s voice on Rugby promo ads? This is a love song that was turned into being “simply the best, better than all the rest”. I don’t think anyone actually knows the words to all of this song, we only need to know the chorus because it’s catchy and it hits you right where it needs to. As soon as this song starts you feel like putting your shoes on and sprinting to the try lines as if you were going for that winning try. “You’re the best!”

will lose, some were born to sing the blues.” I don’t know about being born to sing the blues, but this song was born to be rocked at karaoke bars all over the world! 6. Survivor - Eye of the Tiger Put this song on and train like Rocky Balboa! Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee,

and WIN LIKE A CHAMP! Actually all caps and one exclamation mark doesn’t cut it, it deserves another exclamation mark “!”. We love this song because it is the ultimate challenge, “it’s the eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight”, whether you are a runner, a cyclist, a fighter, or just trying to reach your goal, this song will make you want to furiously rise up to the challenge. There are two important messages here, the first is that we can lose ourselves when it becomes too hard, but you can keep yourself motivated by fighting to make your dreams come true. The second is to remember who you are once you’ve gone the distance, keep your heart in it and don’t leave your love for it. 7. Stan Bush - Dare Some things come in pairs and this is one of them, as you will find out in the next top inspirational song. From the 1986 original Transformers animated movie, this song resonates not just with the movie (although hearing it in the movie makes it so much more awesome); it physically compels you to dare to be better. “You got to be all that you can be”, the lines may be cheesy, but the truth is out there - we loved the cheese then and we still love the cheese now. “Out of the darkness you stumble into the light.” It’s about standing your ground when all odds are stacked against you, “it’s time to take a stand, and you can win if you dare.” 8. Stand Bush - The Touch Here is the twin brother of the Transformer’s theme song and similar to Dare, if you have seen the original

It follows the underdog Autobot Hotrod standing his ground and at the moment where he opens the matrix to light their darkest hour, it strikes you in that special spot that makes you want to say “F**K YEAH!!” Double exclamation with no hesitation this time! “It’s in the blood, it’s in the will, it’s in the mighty hands of steel”, this song is pretty much self-explanatory. It is exactly what it means, all we got to say is “You got the touch! You got the power!” How to get through a bad day: 1) Put on Stan Bush. 2) Listen to Stan Bush. 3) Transform and roll out! 9. Savage Garden Affirmation One of Australia’s most successful bands, and we couldn’t be more proud to call them one of our own. Why is this song inspiring? Because it makes you think hard and once you actually understand the message, it’s like being awakened from all the new age technicalities that has made us overly complicated over the years. The very core of this song is simply based on the things that Savage Garden believes in. Here are the three points that we totally agree with. “I believe that trust is more important than monogamy”. People tend to label and sub label relationships and make these crazy rules and exceptions of what counts as cheating or walking the fine line between sex and making love. It is in this line that they go straight to the core of every relationship; with these simple words they have conveyed a powerful meaning. If people are

honest and really trust each other in a relationship then the label for monogamous people doesn’t have to exist. “I believe that God does not endorse TV evangelists” they believe God does not support what people say on TV about religion. Everyone has their own beliefs, and people should not slam other religions because they disagree. “I believe that family is worth more than money or gold”, you can go anywhere in the world and people will share this same belief. No matter how poor or how rich, family is something you just can’t buy. 10. Janet Jackson & Luther Vandross - The Best Things In Life Are Free

something that we never knew we had. 11. Katrina & the Waves Walking On Sunshine “I’m walking on sunshine, WaaaOO!” This is a stimulating feel good song. It’s the kind of song you want to wake up to every morning with that upbeat attitude where nothing can stand in your way because “it’s time to feel good!” She sings about coming into clarity about a relationship with someone that she was unsure about. Now that she knows with certainty, she’s “walking on sunshine” and nothing can bring her down. Anyone can sing about being happy, but not everyone can blow your troubles away and make you feel the true depth of their song, the way Katrina and The Waves do. 12 - Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston - When You Believe

over the years. Once upon a time we all wanted to get into Mariah’s pants, and we would all trade places with Kevin Costner to be Whitney’s bodyguard. How may you achieve this you ask? The answer is MIRACLES! Believe and you will achieve! 13. Enigma - Return to Innocence Surrender yourself to the serenity of the voice that will take you back to the “return to innocence”. This song makes takes you back to a gentler time, a time when you didn’t care how the world viewed you. Just close your eyes and let your subconscious take you to a place where you’re not “afraid to be weak” or too “proud to be strong”, take this journey to discover your innocence and return to yourself. 14. Michael Bolton - Go The Distance

Akva / Shutterstock.com

We love Janet as much as we loved Michael, as we also love this song. Like Savage Garden said “family is worth more than money or gold”, well the best things in life really are free. Think about it for a moment. The first time you Hi-Fived someone, the first time you kissed a girl, the feeling you got when you won a competition. “The best things in life are free, now that I’ve discovered what you mean to me.” Sometimes we just need to challenge ourselves to realise our full potential, or even find

When two of the biggest divas in the industry come together to sing a song, you can bet it is going to be some pretty powerful stuff. Now I know this is a Men’s magazine and some would fight me on some of these choices, but you can’t fight me on this one. Yes, it’s kind of girly but the song tells you tales of miracles, something which mankind has forgotten

Helga Esteb / Shutterstock Images

By now you must be thinking either this guy has lost the plot, or you totally agree with me. So what if it’s from another cartoon (Walt Disney’s Hercules), and so what if it’s Michael Bolton? This song is about longing for the place where they belong and dreaming of someone special waiting there. It’s the story of a misfit who takes the chance to make a

better life for himself. “It’s an uphill slope, and I won’t lose hope”, this is a guy with an unbreakable will who goes from zero to hero. This is the hero that can move mountains and the guy singing this song, is the same guy who sang “When a man loves a woman”, and killed it! 15. R. Kelly - I believe I Can Fly Every time I hear this song I think about Michael Jordan and The Air Up There. Everybody wants to be like Mike! We often build barriers around ourselves which prevent us to achieve what we deem to be “impossible”. Even the great giants were rejected. Michael Jordan was cut from the basketball team in high school; Walt Disney was fired for not having any good ideas and a lack of imagination; Elvis Presley was told by a stage manager after a show that he was better off going back to his old job as a truck driver. This song is about learning to reach for the stars and believing that you can become something great. Michael Jordan didn’t just give up, he tried even harder, and he practiced before and after school every day and came back to the

47

MensLiving.com.au

team as one of the strongest players. Walt Disney drove a couple of his businesses into bankruptcy before getting some success with the Walt Disney we know today; Elvis Presley kept putting himself out there and playing where ever he could until he got the break he needed. “If I can see it, then I can do it, if I just believe it, there’s nothing to it.” 16. Queen - We Will Rock You Earlier we said that some songs come in pairs and this is another one of them. This half is the ultimate pump up song. “You got mud on your face, you big disgrace!”, You can get a thousand random people in a room and no matter what they normally listen to, they’ll recognise this song and they will start stamping their feet and clapping their hands to the beat as if like they were born doing it. They’ll get so pumped it will make them want to punch something and fly kick walls. 17. Queen - We Are The Champions This song is the other half whether played together or by itself, it is still

considered to be one of the most recognisable rock songs and has become the ultimate sporting anthem among athletes and sporting victories. This song at its core is about overcoming adversity and obstacles in your path to victory. Rock this song because you “are the champion!” 18 . U2 - It’s A Beautiful Day A beautiful day can only get better when you’re listening to this song on the same day. And even if the day isn’t beautiful, then it will be after you’ve listen to this song on high volume. This song is about a person who has nothing. “No space to rent in this town”, he doesn’t have a place to sleep. “You thought you found a friend”, he doesn’t have any friends. “You’ve got no destination”, “You’re out of luck”, he has no desires or goals. And when the “sky falls” that’s it, he has hit rock bottom and has nothing. It is then and only then that this man can actually see how beautiful the day really is. The man starts noticing all the beauty in the world that goes unnoticed. The message here is that people are too focused on the wrong things

in life. If you stop to take in a deep breath of fresh air for a moment, you will see that there is so much beauty in the world out there that you have forgotten. 19. Johnny Nash - I Can See Clearly Now Call me old fashion, but this song purifies my soul. Whether I just got out of a bad relationship, recovered from a bad hangover, or just lost my job, this song gives me hope and courage to have a positive outlook on the future. “Look straight ahead, there’s nothing but blue skies.” 20. Daniel Powter - Bad Day This song describes every kind of bad day perfectly. Sometimes being a little emotional and “singing a sad song just to turn it around” is what you need to feel better. If you have not seen the film clip to this song, it is strongly recommended. It is old school, and not just overdanced choreography with weird clothes and makeup. It’s a short film with a good storyline. Watching the clip actually makes you even more addicted to the song. And that is ML’s TOP 20!

MAN HUGS Kim Long us about all the things men should know know Kim tells Long tells us about all the things men should

As men, we possess a primal instinct to our environment and a sixth sense for unspoken emotions. That is why we have an affection ritual that is handed down from generation to generation. This ritual is far more expressive and deep-rooted than any emotive value a hug can offer. We hit each other, dedicate crappy nicknames, and verbally bash each other with relentless ardour. It may be a more brutal form of affection compared to our female counterparts who perform the sympathetic ritual of crying, hugging, and making up, or making out - whichever you prefer to imagine. But every man knows the warmth that lies beneath this barbaric hostility. The more foul and heinous words one man is comfortable in using to verbally beat the other with, the closer the bond. It says “we’re good mates” with a straight-forward too-right attitude which no hug could ever compare to, no matter how tight or strong the embrace. There are many unspoken laws in the Kingdom of Man, or MANDOM. Since this has been obscured by women who make men believe things like “Manbags” and “Guyliner” are masculine. I would like to reinforce some of these laws. 1) On a road trip the strongest bladder determines pit stops, not the weakest. 2) Complaining about the brand of free beer in a mate’s fridge is taboo. However, it is perfectly okay to kick up a stink if the temperature is unsuitable. 3) Unless you’re in jail, NEVER fight naked. 4) If a man’s fly is down, that’s his problem. You didn’t see anything. Now I am not against change nor am I against personal opinions on manbags and guyliner. I am simply stating that the rules of engagement has redefined itself. The hug was originally between a man and a woman, or a woman and another woman, but not a man and another man. The “Manhug” has muscled its way into everyday Mandom and many have fallen victim into this involuntary act of intimacy. So what do you do when a long time acquaintance or a business associate steps in for the full embrace of your bosom? How can you minimise awkwardness and not breach the laws of Mandom? ML Intel shows you how.

Anything longer than 5 seconds is a passionate embrace

No surprise attacks, it must never ever be initiated from behind

WHEN A MAN HUGS, HE ALWAYS HUGS THE OPPOSITE SEX. WHEN IT COMES TO HUGGING ANOTHER MAN IT IS QUITE OFTEN WEIRD AND UNCOMFORTABLE. Hugging another man is not appropriate with every man you come across. In every hug there is an intimate affection that is shared between the two participants. Man to man hugs are generally reserved for close friends and family and “caught in the moment” accidents - like when you’re standing next to a chick for the new year’s count down and a bloke hugs you from behind one second too early. Knowing when it is appropriate to initiate a hug to another man is very important. You don’t want to initiate a four-arm body merge with awkward smiles and seductive whispers. You want to give enough indication to the other man so that he can reciprocate to this pre-embraced gesture that this is an affectionate moment which needs to be executed in a manly fashion.

Rules Of Engagement

No surprise attacks, period. It must never ever be initiated from behind and must always be indicated directly from the front with clear intentions. Physical contact should not last any longer than five seconds. Anything longer constitutes as a heartfelt passionate embrace. No bear hugging. If you’re thinking why, refer to above. This has been abolished for all man-to-man meetings. Another unspoken law of Mandom is men should not wear Speedo’s unless they are training for Iron Man or the Olympics. In the event that one may actually be training for such a competition, no hugging is to be initiated during this moment of tight fitting aero-dynamics.

The Pound Hug

If you’re still uncomfortable with the traditional form of hugging, then you should try the hybrid handshake-and-hug combination called The Pound Hug. It is also known as “The Homie Hug”, “The Bro Hug”, “The Dude Hug”, “The Hetero Hug”, and “The Thug Hug”. Unlike the traditional two armed hug, this hug is achieved after a hand hold clap, or a handshake is given. Firstly, both right hands are locked, then a chest or shoulder bump is given while simultaneously pounding the partner on the back with the left hand. By utilising only one arm to perform this affectionate gesture and keeping the right arms between you and your partner, you effectively neutralise all involuntary intimacy. ML INTEL The next guy to sport a tramp stamp or showcase tattoos gone wrong could be you. Before you go and get yourself inked for life, consider what some of these expert tatooist have to say. Samyo Dalgarno of Sacred Skin says: Tattoo is an ancient art form and with a plethora of styles and influences, people can apply meanings to anything. At the end of the day, after the pain has gone and the skin has healed, it is all about what it means to you. With the diversity of coloured inks, social acceptance and the influx of young artists, the tattoo industry has undergone quite a transformation and a renaissance. It is not uncommon to find tattoo artists with arts and marketing degrees. Tattooing enables them to get paid for doing what they love. Instead or working with brush and canvas they use a needle ink and skin, within them remains the desire to transfer the image they see in their mind to a canvas, in this case, their canvas happens to be someone’s skin. The red heart with a scroll and Mum or your girlfriend’s name tattooed on your forearm is long gone. It is a rare that you will wake up after a big night out only to find you have had some bargirl’s name tattooed on your chest. These days, tattoos are thought out and planned, with some people spending years creating their own living masterpiece. As an artist with many years experience I have never stopped looking to improve my art or my equipment. To push the boundaries to find better ways of shading, more precise lines or whatever I can do to bring the tattoo to life. That is what speaks highly to me… my best work is yet to come. Find a good tattoo artist. There is a lot of work out there for tattooist doing cover ups, don’t get it done at the kitchen table. Australian law require registered studios to meet strict health and cleanliness requirements. After all, you are getting things poked into your skin, you want to make sure it is clean and sterilized. Dragon

A dragon tattoo represents many things depending on the culture. These days people will get it inked because it “looks cool” and not even think about what it is they’re actually getting. Dragons are the symbol of power, courage, strength, determination, and wisdom. “Dragons are pretty much a tattoo standard, though they have become more detailed and intricate as artists push the boundaries of their skills”, says Samyo. “As an icon, it was only in the Christian west where the Dragon was feared. To the East and Middle East, the Dragon was a benevolent creature who represented strength and was nearly always drawn holding the pearl of wisdom.” Details to note are the difference between Japanese Dragons which have three claws and Chinese dragons which have five. There are several types of dragons and each depicts a distinct meaning. Do your research before you decide you want a dragon for life.

Koi Fish

While the legend has become somewhat lost and people simply get it inked because others tell them it’s “good luck”, ML brings you a story long forgotten - The Legend of the Koi Fish. In ancient times there was a yellow river that led to the bottom of a waterfall; at the top of this fall was the Dragon Gates. If a Koi fish succeeded in swimming up the fall to the Dragon Gate it would be transformed into a dragon. This is why Asian cultures associate the dragon with health and wealth as it denotes the ability to overcome adversity and achieve higher goals. The Koi fish represents courage as the old age saying “humans swim through the ocean of suffering without fear, just like a fish swims through water.” Bear in mind that a Koi fish that swims up river is good luck, while a Koi fish that swims down river is bad luck.

Mick Medusa of Bondi Ink Mick’s view on tattooing himself: I personally don’t like the idea of filling my whole arm with one stage or time of my life. I prefer to let my sleeves grow and slowly come together over the years rather than pick one theme. I see my tattoos as a bit of a time line of my life and career in the industry. For myself, since I haven’t completed my journey as an artist or as a human being, I find myself being quite protective of the skin areas I am willing to tattoo. There should be no rushing with this very permanent art form and a chosen tattoo image close to the heart is hard to regret.

INTEL ML Skulls

Originally the skull tattoo represented change. More precisely, it represented significant change. Skulls have always been associated with death, which is the ultimate change in life. Life changing experiences has often occurred during a moment of death and being brought back to life to find a new awakening. The realisation that death is a reality brings about the rebirth of a person who becomes liberated of their old self, and then lives for what truly matters to them without restrictions and hesitations. Over time, this has become a trait for outlaws, pirates and personas of people who are dark, evil and live dangerously. In today’s society it can mean a number of things. The concept of the skull has been around longer than it has been recorded in history, and as a result, it has been hashed, rehashed, then reinvented.

Tiger

The tiger is the incarnation of power and beauty. Like humans they evoke fierceness but at the same time great passion. This creature is astonishingly amazing - a true force to be reckoned with, which is why humans are drawn to its magnetic power.

“Portrait art and realism is one of the current tattoo trends. Some people choose to gather a collection of their favorite idols or movie stars to decorate themselves. It’s a personal choice”, says Samyo.

The Japanese warrior has long been a tattoo favourite, modern variations add a new flavour to a very traditional art form. Artists over the years have developed their own style or a preference for the iconographic Japanese tattoo, as this offers many opportunities for expression. Traditional Japanese art tells a story or an episode in a person’s life. According to Samyo, demons abound have many names and tales of their deeds.

Religion “Religious icons has often been the inspiration for tattoos. Some of its roots can be found going back to sailors and merchant seamen who would have images of Christ tattooed on their backs in an effort to avert “the lash”. With the increased popularity of eastern religions and iconography, there has been an increase in request for this type of tattoo”, says Samyo.

VICTORIA’S SECRET WHO BELIEVES THAT ANY AUSSIE MAN CAN DATE ONE OF THESE ANGELS?

FEATURE

WORDS Hugh Harrington

MEN’S LIVING! THAT’S WHO!

There is one show that is more spectacular than any other, one that captivates both men and women. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show - every year I look forward to it, eager with anticipation to see these girls walk out of the “super pretty factory” and onto the catwalk. It is the only time I know when my girlfriend and my mate’s girlfriends will give us their approval to fantasize about another woman. It’s the time of year that we wish the Lynx ad, “even angels fall” came true. If truth be told, after watching this captivating fashion show, I sometimes fear that the girlfriend is picturing one of them when she refuses to open her eyes while we’re making love. These genetically gifted amazons are the envy of women, and the lucky men they share their lives with, are the men we wished never existed. A normal Aussie bloke might not be able to name a model outside of Megan Gale, Jennifer Hawkins and Elle Macpherson. But, as soon as you say those three magical words, “Victoria’s Secret Angels”, they become experts on the fashion world and can not only name, but pinpoint where they saw her and what she was wearing. Alone, these women are extraordinarily engaging and mesmerizing. Collectively, they are a cloud of influence. It’s the cheerleader effect multiplied by infinity if they were an actual cheer leading team, no one would be watching the game. The magnitude of their beauty hits your so hard your girlfriend’s mum would feel it. Not only are these women beautiful, but some of them have a business mind to match and have built empires for themselves outside of the modelling world. What does it take to score an Angel these days? From what we’ve gathered, it appears to be artistic talent of some sort, good to great looks, money, and charisma. These women are the object of desire by a lot of men and probably some women (if not a lot of women). Images By - Lev Radin /

THE PLAN

Now that you know where the angels fall, let’s get into position so we can catch one of them. If you don’t have the looks, get selfassured. You don’t have to be right, you just have to be confident!

If you don’t have the natural talent for sports or athletics, get some! In the words of the great Michael Jordan “Everybody has talent, but ability takes effort”. If you don’t have the drive to achieve greatness in your chosen field, make sure your Aussie accent is in top notch, we hear the girls abroad love it! Be down to earthish and be prepared to be great fathers. Once you have all the above, you still need to manoeuver an opportunity to meet one of them while they’re single. Good luck gents, at Men’s Living we believe anything is possible!

Inception Jessica Holland’s

Turn your woman into a dynamite reality.

INTEL ML

W

omen are creatures of complex emotional components. We would be living in a perfect world if they were like a microwave where you could push a couple of buttons and heat her up when you're hungry for something quick. It’s that easy for us, but it is not that easy for them. Men are like snacks - cheap, quick, a little guilty, but totally satisfying. Women are like fine meals on a nice china plate, they take time to cook and they take time to eat. For a steamy sex life, no matter how long you have been with this fine piece of premium meat, she will always need two key ingredients: love and respect. The way you prepare this dynamite combo is through some old fashion wooing. Give her compliments, but don’t make it too obvious. She likes it when you’re nice (that’s what she calls respect), but not when you’re nice for a reason (that’s what she calls love). So compliment her whether it leads to sex or not, because at the end of the day, it is still a great recipe for a great relationship. lanting The Idea: If there was ever a time to imitate something from a movie into reality it’s now, use your “Inception” skills to plant the idea of sex into her brain. You are only allowed to feed her information and knowledge without directly telling her. She needs to come to the conclusion on her own. Think about the time when you were in high school and you brought a girl into your room for the first time. Curiously she starts going through your

P

things and finds some of your porn, and inquisitively she wants to flip through it. Without you realising, the idea of sex has been planted into her head. Assuming you didn’t have some weird freaky porn that nearly all women would be disgusted by, you probably got lucky that day, even if you were young and it was an accident and you only got to 2nd or 3rd base, it still counts. nject the Sex: No matter how secure a woman is with her own body and sexual abilities, she still has a need for reassurance. There’s a reason why women shop in pairs, and that’s because they need their friends to tell them that this dress or those jeans looked hot on her. When a woman feels sexy, she wants to have sex, and lots of it. Make her feel special on a daily basis. Touch her in her erogenous zones or kiss her without forcing the lead to sex. If it does lead there, then by all means go with it. As women age and leave their thirties (or after children), their libido tends to crash. It takes a toll on every woman’s self-esteem. It is important to remind her how special she is and that she’s still beautiful and sexy. If a woman is confident in her abilities and sexuality, she will gladly initiate sex and reciprocate sexual favors without any pressure or carefully planned persuasions from you. The way women initiate sex will depend greatly on the individual woman. Some women may jump you, others may be playful and may slowly lead you into the sack while others are more subtle and will give you that affirmative look. This is the look that

I

cannot be misread, wrongly interpreted, or miscommunicated in any way. This is the look that is definitive and you are 280% sure that you’re going to get some action. If you do not know this look, you will know it when you get it, it’s like finding out your going to have sex for the first time.

K

eeping a Schedule:

Scheduling sex may work for some couples, but not for most. The best sex is always passionate and spontaneous, routine sex is like bullshit reports you need to do at work. With that being said, you want to keep an open schedule to ensure that sex is always a possibility. Sometimes being physically present is not enough. You should offer a massage or just cuddle her for a little while. Women reward men who do these things without always asking for it. Most women do not climax from intercourse alone. Some women even have problems getting there if they are insecure about the relationship or their bodies. Do your part and make her reach her peak. BOOK TOP 5 SIGNS TO TELL WHEN SOMEONE IS LYING

Dr David Craig 1>> The Eyes: The eyes are an incredibly valuable source of information that humans naturally rely upon. This is particularly evident when we look at photographs, as we cannot rely upon body movement and speech. Do you want the skills to tell when someone is lying? Perhaps you have doubts about a work associate or employee, your student or patient, or maybe even your partner or child? In the August release Lie Catcher, lie detection expert Dr David Craig provides readers with an easy-toread guide on applying cutting-edge lie detecting skills to your everyday life. From bargaining, making a purchase, or dealing with children through to the more serious business of negotiating a contract or identifying infidelity, he delivers simple but effective tips and techniques we can all use to see behind the facade and get to the truth. With plenty of full colour photographs and practical examples, Lie Catcher provides readers with the tools to be their own human lie detector… in just 60 minutes! Available at all your leading book stores. RRP $24.99

When shown a photograph of a person, the first place we usually look is the eyes in an effort to assess the emotion of that person. The three key areas of the eyes to focus on are: Eye Contact, Blink Rate and Eye Movement/Direction. 2>> Voice Flow: It’s very hard to tell a spontaneous lie and maintain a fluid speech cadence (or rhythm). As the liar tries hard to fabricate an answer the increased cognitive load (brain drain), impairs the natural speech flow. The voice may also increase in pitch - due to stress. 3>> Legs & Feet : I believe legs and feet are an underrated source of deception clues and are often missed. Liars are usually acutely aware of hand and arm movement and will minimise it, but forget to reduce the movement in their legs, particularly if they think their legs are hidden out of sight, such as under a table or desk. 4>> Hand to Face: Two common tactics of people who are lying may attempt to hide their mouth or to hold their mouth closed, or sometimes touch their nose as it has becomes itchy due to increased blood flow to that area - Pinocchio style! It’s as if the liar subconsciously wants to hide the source of the lie itself. You may have noticed, particularly with young children who have yet to learn how to hide their deceit effectively, when they tell a lie or inadvertently say something that they wished they hadn’t, they instantaneously put their hand across their mouth. This is sometimes a very overt and animated gesture. The same principle applies to adults, however, the signs are more subtle as we have learned self-control and also to minimise the signs of lying. So adult liars may attempt to touch their mouth and/or touch their nose as they lie - sometimes subtly with their fingers or even with an object, such as a pen or coffee cup. 5>> Deflection: Deflection is as the name infers, a way to deflect someone’s attention on to something else to avoid being questioned or to avoid answering a question. Liars will sometimes do this and attempt to do it subtly, usually as part of an over elaborate response to a question - that doesn’t actually answer the question. Coincidentally politicians are very good at this technique! If someone answers your question with a question - turn on your Lie Radar - or as it’s termed in Lie Catcher your Liedar.

That’s what we at Men’s Living live upon... to help you answer all your questions about this awe-inspiring and magnificent journey we call “Life”. Ask Dean about dating, girls, diet, exercise... ask him about your Mum or your dog... ask anything... but stay away from questions of snow accidents... Dean is not very adept at staying out of peoples (namely his mates) blind spots when skiing, despite being one of Australia’s best ski instructor. Email deardean@mensliving.com.au any questions that are stopping you from having a restful sleep.

How long do you think I should wait after sex, before I can go to sleep or starting playing my PS3? Dear Dean, I recently hooked up with this girl that I’ve had a crush on for a long time. She’s a great girl, and we have amazing sex. How long do you think I should wait after sex, before I can go to sleep or starting playing my PS3? Mitchell, VIC

W

ell Mitchell, there are a few things to consider here. If you say you like her, then you would also want to please her too, right? All women are different. For example, my last girlfriend didn’t care too much that I fell asleep pretty much within three minutes of the conclusion of our “love making”, as long as I cuddled her. Whereas my current girlfriend, demands that I lie in bed and have a conversation with her. As long as her needs are met, and she’s happy, then I would suggest you do what you want after that. Maybe you can teach her how to drive on your favourite track on F1 2011. Dear Dean, A while ago I came back from my holiday and had sex with my partner. My partner said that they remained faithful, however I have just been tested positive for HIV. I feel so betrayed and I now feel like I can’t trust anyone. I can’t tell my family, and I feel trapped inside. I feel so angry and I just wish people could be more truthful. What do I do from here? Sam, QLD

As anyone would expect, in this situation you’re feeling angry, frustrated and hurt. Most life coaches are trained to deal with releasing anger and frustration. I would suggest finding a life coach to help you through this difficult period. My life coach has helped me a lot to get through some really tough times. All the best mate. Dear Dean, I am trying to ditch my girlfriend, but she’s so sensitive, almost bordering on psycho. How should I do it, without her wanting to kill me? Andre, WA.

A

ndre my man, it seems like you’ve gotten yourself in a ditch! Don’t worry, you’re not the first, and you’re certainly not the last. My advice would be to just start slowing things down - less text messages, phones calls and dates obviously. Then tell her that something is not right within you, and you don’t feel it’s adequate to continue the relationship. If possible, tell her in a public domain over coffee. It wouldn’t hurt to bring her some flowers either. Good luck buddy.

D

ear Sam, it is unfortunate that your situation has arisen. I’m sure a lot of our readers, including myself feel empathy for you.

MACHU PICCHU, PERU By Mitch Brady

An ancient city ensconced with spirituality, unrepentant splendour and opulence. Mostly referred to as the “Lost City of the Incas, it is possibly the most proverbial icon of the Inca World.

PHOTOGRAPHY By Stephanie munguia

I

have always had this country at the forefront of my mind since my childhood years, although unknown to me as “Machu Picchu”. It became a predictable destination later in my teen years as I discovered the real “Inca City” through geographic studies, and connected the 1980s cartoon series “Mysterious Cites of Gold” to this ancient land. With vivid landscapes and extraordinary scenes, this is a country that has inspired many travellers even before they have laid their own eyes on it - including me on all counts.

Landing into Lima, the capital city of Peru, seemed run down. As I had a one day stopover, I grabbed my camera and went to explore this archaic city. Beautiful in the main plaza, a soldier walks by with a riot shield and rifle gun in his every day uniform. Unbeknown to tourists such as me, the security detail was never mentioned by any of my friends who had travelled there in recent years. Lima, known as the City of Kings was founded by Francisco Pizarro on the banks of the Rimac River on January 6th 1535. Today, Peru itself has both Spanish and Inca influences as the Spanish conquistadors brought across their creative style of arts through the centuries, resulting in an art fashion known as “naïf ”.

Statue of Jose San Martin, Lima.

D

espite the invasion by the Spanish conquistadors, the Peruvians have been successful at conserving the culture of Peru for thousands of years. Approximately 45% of the residents in Peru are indigenous, 37% are mestizo, which is a combination of both Latin and indigenous descent,

82

while the rest are made up of African, Chinese, Indian or some other ancestry. Half of Peru’s population live in the mountain areas, while the rest live on the coastal areas of Peru with less than 5% of the natives living in the jungle areas.

usco is where I spent the majority of my time during this wondrous and magical trip. Full of tourist, the locals made me feel welcomed as they ushered me into their restaurants and hotels. A delightful city, the dramatic setting of my hotel was just as sensational as the city itself with a ton of great churches, and shopping of colourful scarves and anklets, earrings and traditional art pieces. Next was my road to Machu Picchu. For some uncanny reason, I decided to catch a 6am taxi ride through the top of the Andes Mountain. With the picturesque landscapes passing through

all my senses, the driver speeds through these tiny winding roads with pockets of fog, which hardly slows him down as he ferociously charges up and around the corners. With magnificent cliff drops to one side, it was quite a relief when I arrived at Ollantaytambo. From there I jumped on the train for another hour and a half to arrive at Aguas Calientes. A further 20 minute bus ride bequeathed me to one of the most amazing and coolest things I have ever seen in my entire life – Machu Picchu. The old cartoon pictures from the Mysterious Cities of Gold were right before my eyes. Making it even more terrestrial,

Add to this great weather, beautiful people and a buzzing atmosphere and you have the recipe for an action packed NYE.

Barcelona is in celebration mode for Noche Vieja when dancers from ballroom to salsa and flamenco perform all over the city for a week. There are dance parties galore. The Mexican tradition of eating 12 grapes come from their Spanish background. In Spain you should eat a grape following each bell sound when the clock strikes 12 at midnight. Stay on until January 5 when the Three Kings Parade visits the city and sweets are thrown out to all the children who line the streets.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Long dark nights mean a city with a happening night life and NYE is no exception. After the fireworks spectacle, community bonfires and traditional musicians perform in the streets. You’ll find most bars and clubs open until 5am.

I AM SPECIAL EFFECTS

I AM BRIGHT AT NIGHT

The first Nikon digital-SLR camera to offer Special Effects mode. The D5100 offers special effects that can be applied with both shooting of still images and movie recording. Special effects are viewed on the monitor before shooting or recording begins, allowing users to confirm the desired results in real time.

* A high-resolution Nikon DXformat CMOS image sensor with an effective pixel count of 16.2-million pixels, an image-processing engine that provides superior image quality and rich expression of tones and the new High Dynamic Range (HDR) function.

The Special Effects mode built into the D5100 offers seven special effects, including Selective Colour and Colour Sketch.

Favourite Special Effects Selective colour All colours other than those selected by the user are recorded in monochrome. Up to three colours can be selected at a time. Colour sketch The camera detects and colours outlines for a colour sketch effect. The monitor display can be used to adjust the vividness of colours and the thickness of outlines. Miniature effect Distant subjects appear as miniatures for a diorama effect. Users can choose the orientation (vertical/ horizontal) and width (narrow/ normal/wide) of the area that will be in focus. Night vision When this option is selected, extremely high ISO sensitivities are used (up to ISO 102400 equivalent). This enables shooting in the dark while verifying the subject and composition in the monitor. * RAW recording is not possible. Still images can only be recorded in JPEG (black-and-white) format. Only contrast-detect AF can be used.

* The D5100 is equipped with the same DX-format CMOS image sensor and EXPEED 2 image-processing engine as the high-end D7000. These features enable capture of highresolution images with excellent expression of tones. With standard sensitivity settings of ISO 100–6400 and additional increases up to Hi 2 (ISO 25600 equivalent), the camera offers improved capability when shooting in dim lighting conditions and also produces better results when capturing movement. * The HDR function captures two shots of varying exposure each time the shutter-release button is pressed and combines them into a single image with a broad dynamic range. The resulting images beautifully recreate what is seen by the naked eye, even when shooting backlit scenes, with little or no loss of detail in shadows or highlights.

I AM A NEW PERSPECTIVE A large 3-inch, approximately 921k-dot high-resolution vari-angle monitor increases visibility. In addition, the range of colours that can be reproduced by the monitor is equivalent to that of the sRGB gamut.

I AM FULL HD CREATIVITY

The D5100 is equipped with the D-Movie function that enables recording of high-definition movies (1920 × 1080p, 30p) exhibiting superior video quality. Auto-focusing during movie recording is possible using contrast-detect AF. When the focus mode is set to full-time-servo AF (AF-F) and the AF-area mode to subject-tracking AF, the camera automatically maintains focus on a subject moving throughout the frame. The D5100 also offers in-camera movie editing functions that allow users to save a single frame as a still JPEG image or delete unnecessary portions from the beginning and/or end of movie files. In addition, the D5100 is equipped with built-in support for stereo audio recording via the Stereo Microphone ME-1 (available separately), and the mode dial and live view switch have been positioned on the same spindle in consideration of operational ease. The optional Stereo Microphone ME-1 can be used to record sound in stereo while also preventing noise caused by lens vibration being recorded during autofocus.

Adoption of a side hinge for the variangle monitor prevents the monitor from hitting the tripod when opened while the camera is mounted. The vari-angle monitor opens to the side from 0 to 180°, and can be rotated up to 90° clockwise. This enables shooting from a wide variety of angles, from low to high, making self portraits easier.

Q & A with Austin Walsh At 19 years of age, he has worked with the big names of Personal Development such as Brian Tracy and Mark Victor Hansen. Read on to explore how social media can benefit you and your business.

L

une Lim has a chat with Internet Marketing Guru Austin Walsh, founder of www.iSocialacademy.com.

LL: Austin, tell us a little bit about what you do.

Austin with some young entrepreneurs.

AW: I travel all around the world and speak to entrepreneurs and business owners on how to use social media and the internet to grow their business. I started off in Chicago a few years back and now we’re international in over 30 countries and growing by the day. It’s been so awesome and blessed. LL: How did you get into it? I know you started doing parties and stuff … <grin> AW: So I started doing parties, and my parties were on Facebook. So the parties got really really big and really really quickly, and what happened was, as parties got bigger, I realised that Facebook can be used for so many more things other than just parties. Then I hooked up with guys like Mark Victor Hansen, Brian Tracy, Jeff and Kane, and I started doing their Facebook Fan Pages for them and it grew with astronomical levels very very quickly. LL: What value do you provide to your clients? AW: We have two services. We have

coaching and a lot of done-for-you services. Some services, we can drive up to 10,000 fans a month for some of our clients. For our coaching clients and our customers, we teach them how to create the systems that they need to win big on the internet. So many people today are trying to do things that don’t work anymore. So we teach them how to do the right things online to create success. LL: Where do you see internet marketing going into the next 10-15 years? AW: Even in the next year, it’s automated webinars. In the next 15 years, it’s going to be crazy. Internet marketing moves like dog years, very quickly. But right now the hot thing is automated webinars and it’s only going to get bigger. It’s like almost every seminar is being held online. If you get into the virtual type events that are happening every single day, the technology is getting there. If you look even further in the next 5 to 10 years, you will have hologram technology coming out. You have all this new technology that’s happening very quickly behind our eyes, the applications and the digital stuff is going be huge. LL: Tell me more about this hologram technology. AW: You can really be in one place, and your body or the image of your body somewhere else - almost like the Star Wars thing back in the day. It’s being tested very quickly. The Black Eyed Peas actually did a concert in Europe while they were in America, and it was all hologram based. Their bodies and the movements of the bodies were there but they were totally very far away. LL: That’s pretty cool. AW: It’s very expensive technology right now but it’s getting cheaper by the day.

LL: Awesome. Tell me more about the 40 young entrepreneurs and kids that you work with… AW: Yeah we do a ton of stuff with young entrepreneurs and kids and show them ways of getting them out of their habits of trying to not take opportunities and take jobs. What we show them is, how do you take a killer opportunity and turn that opportunity into a positive cash flow so you have free time. We do that in Chicago every summer. We try to take 35-40 kids and show them how to create lots of success, make lots of money and have lots of fun. LL: What advice would you give to any young aspiring internet marketer? AW: Do what you love, be passionate about what you do. Just do whatever it is you’re passionate about. It’s that simple. If you like sharks, do something with sharks. If you like speaking, then speak. I mean, whatever you love to do. If it’s something you’re going to wake up in the morning and be excited about, and you wake up early because of that, then that is what you should do. LL: That’s awesome man. Austin, thank you very much. AW: Thanks Lune. Keep rocking and rolling. Check out www.isocialacademy.com for further information.

Even the ATO tries (believe it or not) to help you. Each year around June they send out letters to taxpayers that may be under or over claiming expenses to warn them of the law and what they can claim. In March or April the following year their data matching process sends out letters to taxpayers who have missed declaring income. This is usually accompanied by a tax notice with fines and penalties. So don’t get caught with simple mistakes, the ATO will usually catch up to you. The most common mistakes in 2010 were: 1>> Missed income. Have you changed jobs this year? Have you earned interest from a bank account that you forgot about? Make sure you consider all income sources and declare them. 2>> Missed deductions. People don’t always realise that things they have, such as rental property expenses, are deductions. Investigate deductions before you lodge your return. 3>> Lodging an incomplete form. Simple things like forgetting to include your date of birth, signature, or even your tax file number. If you use e-tax this is an easy way to make sure every part of the form is completed. 4>> Medicare levy information. Remember: if you qualify for a reduction in the Medicare Levy Surcharge, you need to put that information on your tax return, otherwise you will be charged. 5>> Not claiming rebates. While some rebates have been thresholds and can be confusing, don’t be fooled into thinking because it is too hard, you won’t claim them. They may be worth the extra time to research what you are entitled to claim.

It is often said there are two things that are certain in life - death and taxes. Early in my career I worked for the infamous Kerry Packer. His view was not to pay a cent more than you have too, as the government doesn’t spend it very wisely. In those days we spent a lot of money to save tax. So in Kerry’s eyes only one thing was certain, and that is death. My top 10 tax tips for 2011 are: 1>> Keep your receipts and be organised. If you think something may be deductible, keep the receipt and check. Better still, keep a diary to record your expenses and what your work activities have been. 2>> Superannuation is one of the most tax effective vehicles. Consider setting up your own self-managed fund and rolling over the balances from your other funds. Remember, super funds can now borrow money to invest in real estate or shares. 3>> If you have a rental property don’t forget that in many cases depreciation on the building can be claimed. This is often missed. 4>> Pay deductible expenses as close to June 30 as possible to minimize the cash flow impact. 5>> Be smart about how your investments are held. Maximise the use of the tax scales to ensure income is earned by the family member with the lowest income and losses flow to the family member with the highest income. Even better would be to use a family trust so that there is true asset protection and income sharing. 6>> If you use your car for work, keep a log book AND keep all your expenses for the year. It will allow you the option of selecting the best method of claiming the cost of running your vehicle – rather than just the easiest method. 7>> Keep track of your interest and provide tax file numbers to your bank so that you don’t have tax deducted until you lodge your tax return. 8>> Superannuation provides great tax saving benefits. Salary sacrificing or contributing to your low income earning spouse’s fund can give great tax benefits. 9>> Prepay a year in advance the interest on your investment property so that you can claim the deduction now. The same can apply to repairs. 10>> Get good professional advice. If you pay a lot of tax, seek help. Accountants are professionals and it is their job to be worth more than they charge. Remember they do this every single day, whereas in your case, it is a once a year exercise and every year, things can change. High Octane Knowledge Of All Things Masculine

The Five Top Grossing iPhone Apps

I

n January 2007 at the MacWorld Conference, Steve Jobs pulled the covers and revealed the long awaited iPhone. He declared it a revolutionary product, featuring the “multi-touch” interface as a breakthrough in technology, as aweinspiring as the mouse interface of the 1960s.

On the release of the iPhone, there were just 11 apps. Since then, it has been one of the catchiest buzzwords in daily conversations. 2010 was a remarkable year for the Apple store where nine out of ten downloads came from the Apple’s App Store. According to US research firm Gartner, 2010 saw Apple rake in USD5.2 billion in revenue, with 8.2 billon in global downloads. Those numbers could easily triple for 2011. Gartner estimates by 2014, over 185 billion applications will have been downloaded worldwide. These figures cement the notion that apps enhance user experience to mobile phones and not just a fad. Gartner’s Research Director Stephanie Baghdassarian comments, “Many are wondering if the app frenzy we have been witnessing is just a fashion, and, like many others, it shall pass. We do not think so.” Gartner also stated that out of the projected 17.7 billion apps that will be downloaded this year, 81 per cent of them will be free. They believe there is still room for more growth in this booming market. Developers are welcomed; as Apple celebrated their 10 billion downloads from the App Store earlier this year. Gartner sees the trend moving towards more paid apps, as users are becoming more trusting of the billing systems for apps, and the added value in useability of apps. Got an idea for an app?
