Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2017
FROM
THE PRINCIPAL In this momentous year we also welcomed a new Chair of the Board of Directors, Mr Geoff Ryan AM, and celebrated the immense contribution Mr Simon Appel OAM has made to the life of the School, upon his retirement as the role of Chair. We are indeed fortunate to retain his foresight and wise counsel as a continuing member of the School Board. The year ended as it began, with great celebration. We posted our best ever VCE results in a year that also included five sports premierships, an incredible stage production of Les Misérables in our new theatre and an expo of exceptional student artworks in our new gallery space. All along, the positivity around the School was second to none.
IT WAS ANOTHER AMAZING YEAR AT MENTONE GRAMMAR. No doubt, a memorable highlight of the year was the long awaited opening of the Creativity Centre, that has significantly enhanced the landscape of our Campus.
The happy, healthy culture that so many people contribute to is something of which we are all very proud. It has been such a significant contributor to our ever-increasing enrolments and I am grateful to everyone who contributed to it in a positive manner. This year, Mentone Grammar celebrated 94 years as a School and with a Centenary looming it has been incumbent upon us all to keep ensuring that the history we are creating is a good one. Such can certainly be said of 2017. The establishment of the Creativity Centre precinct will have a significant impact on the culture of our School for many years to come. The breadth of programs we can now offer are inspiring in their forward thinking and specialisation and will keep our students at the forefront of performance, visual and technical studies. The changeover of Chair of our, ever-stable, School Board from Mr Simon Appel OAM to Mr Geoff Ryan AM has also been both well received and positive for the School’s governance. Without stable governance
schools can struggle – such is certainly not the case here and I take this opportunity to thank not only Geoff and Simon, but all our Directors. This year also saw the retirement of our inaugural Head of our Primary School, Eblana. Mr John Nolan joined the School at an interesting time in our history and led the Eblana Campus with wisdom and compassion over the last 14 years. A great deal was achieved during his tenure as Head of Eblana and, as a School, we should be extremely grateful to John for his leadership of our youngest students. We finished our 94th year in great shape but knowing that there is still so much more we can do to continually improve this remarkable School. This publication summarises the strategic and business developments of the School for 2017. Once again, we are proud of the growth and exceptional academic achievements of our students who are such joyful, welladjusted young people. They are certainly great ambassadors of our proud Anglican heritage and of our seven School Values of Caring, Respect, Endeavour, Discipline, Integrity, Resilience and Service. I thank all who have made a contribution to Mentone Grammar in 2017 and congratulate our Community on its success. In particular I thank the School Board, the School Executive, staff and students along with parents and our many supporters.

STAFF STAFF PROFILE In 2017, 242 staff members contributed to and actively supported Mentone Grammar’s diverse range of Teaching and Learning educational and wellbeing programs. The School employed 171 academic staff members, 17 academic support staff and 54 operations staff. Mentone Grammar staff comprised: 70.7% teaching staff 7 % learning program support staff 22.3% operations staff. In 2017, two Indigenous staff members worked at the School. In 2017, 30% of the academic staff worked part-time. This enabled staff the opportunity to blend their professional and family responsibilities. For other staff, working part-time enabled them to assist with the care of their parents, return to work after extended leave or to facilitate specific transition to retirement plans. This created some job-share opportunities. The Mentone Grammar workforce comprised 67% female and 33% male staff members where the gender composition varied significantly between the different campuses, year levels, faculties and operational departments.
STAFF ATTENDANCE & RETENTION There were 192 academic days in the 2017 school year with academic staff attending an amount commensurate to their full-time or part-time fraction. In total, academic staff were absent for an average of eight days in 2017. Absences included Long Service Leave, Personal Leave (Sick and Carer’s Leave) including some extended Personal Leave, Bereavement and Compassionate Leave. This equated to a 4.36% absentee rate per academic staff member. Long Service Leave may be taken by long-term staff members after 10 years of service to our School Community. The turnover rate of academic staff in 2017 was 8%, which equates to 92% retention rate.

Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2017
ACADEMIC STAFF QUALIFICATIONS All teachers at Mentone Grammar are registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). A full register of Teaching staff and their qualifications are listed as an addendum to this Community Report. Staff are invited annually to advise of any additional formal qualifications they have successfully completed. Formal qualifications of all staff members are also listed annually in the School yearbook, The Mentonian.
SUPERVISING PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS Mentone Grammar hosted and supervised 28 Pre-Service Teachers in 2017. This is an opportunity for our teachers to give back and enrich the education sector by guiding, coaching and shadowing the next generation of school teachers. We recognise the reciprocal benefits, that learning runs both ways from the teacher to the student and vice versa, as the students expose our teachers to new methodologies, research and technology. Hosting university students also provides the School with the opportunity to identify high quality Gradates for future employment. In 2017 we employed six Graduate Teachers across four Faculties and three Campuses.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING Relevant Professional Learning continued to be available for all staff, both academic and operational. This includes facilitating onsite workshops, conferences, curriculum and compliance updates and skills training. The School invested $302,835 in professional learning for staff in 2017, which equates to an average of $1,251 per staff member. The introduction of a new Position of Responsibility, Head of Teaching Practice, ensured that the academic program strengthened its strategic intent and focus for our Staff Conferences and regular in-house Professional Learning sessions. The appointment of a new Head of Bayview Campus and the introduction of Assistant Heads of Faculty added a new richness to developing and maximising the talents and capacity of current staff.
Staff were encouraged to identify and attend targeted external professional learning activities that addressed their specific learning priorities, including skill development, updates on curriculum development and study designs, access to new technology and conferences. In 2017 we continued to maximise and enhance the use of the Learning Management System (LMS) to embed it into the daily educational practice of the teachers for students to access daily and for parents to regularly access student progress updates and feedback. In 2017, Visible Learning was further developed, with a focus on implementing various Formative Assessment strategies to reinforce student learning. We continued the focus on the RULER Emotional Intelligence program across the Eblana, Bayview and Greenways Campuses. Faculty based professional learning addressed Formative Assessment, specific teaching methodologies and curriculum development. Campus based professional learning addressed students’ individual and collective needs related to appropriate ‘age for stage’ education and development. Staff members were actively encouraged to attend targeted, professional external Faculty Network and Independent Schools Victoria (ISV) meetings, briefings and conferences, relevant to their specific areas of professional responsibility and disciplines.
Examples of formal and informal Professional Learning undertaken in 2017 included: TEACHING AND LEARNING FOCUS Post Graduate, Graduate and Certificate IV qualifications Visible Learning – formative assessment and feedback Peer Classroom Observations and Feedback Learning Walks VCE curriculum updates, Examiners’ Reports and Study Designs Data Interpretation Curriculum Development VIT’s Effective Mentor Program (in support of graduate teachers)

Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2017
STUDENT PERFORMANCE AT MENTONE GRAMMAR Since 2010, Mentone Grammar has based assessment of student performance (Years 3-12) on a comprehensive data collection system that has assessed students from Year 3 to Year 10 every school year, via external standardised assessment tools. This, along with internal assessment, has provided teachers, parents and students with valuable information supporting learners as they progress. Each year, all students in Years 4, 6, 8 and 10 undertake an externally conducted Education Skills Profile Test. Students undergo testing in general reasoning, verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, mathematical performance, reading, spelling and written expression. Each of these areas is measured using a stanine scale. Stanine scores are derived from percentile ranks and help in overcoming the problem of changing units along the percentile rank scale. The stanine scale is divided into nine categories, for which digits 1 to 9 are used. A stanine of 9 indicates a very high performance relative to the reference group (Victorian students of same age), while a stanine of 1 indicates a very low relative performance. The results from our testing process were made available to parents and have been particularly informative for our Teaching Staff. Students who achieved high stanine results in specific areas have been identified and then, through communication with the family, were invited to participate in our Enrichment Programs. The Enrichment Programs sometimes involved students in this category being withdrawn from class to work with the Learning Enhancement Team or on occasions attend out of class sessions. Students with low stanine scores were also identified and participated in our Support Program designed by the Learning Enhancement Team. Ongoing support was usually developed in consultation with an educational psychologist and sometimes involved further detailed testing. The following table indicates our average stanine values for each of the tested areas in Years 4, 6, 8 and 10 via the ESPT tests. All tests were conducted during the 2017 school year. Students from other schools who enrolled to begin in Year 7 at Mentone Grammar were tested at the end of Year 6 and their results are included in the Year 6 section of the tables that follow.

PROGRESS REPORTS The Allwell data can give evidence of effective teaching and learning as matched cohorts are followed through the process. Below is the progression data for our 2017 Year 6 and Year 8 cohorts. Predicted effective learning would result in similar stanine means from test to test. The growth in Writing can be attributed to measures taken at Mentone Grammar in recent years to enhance the literacy program. Other results have been examined for contributing factors and possible improvements to teaching and learning practices.

GREENWAYS LONGITUDINAL STUDY Assessment data from students who undertook Achievement Tests conducted by Allwell Assessment Services late in their Year 8 school year and then again early in Year 10 (Matched Cohort) is used in this analysis. The assumption is that growth or otherwise can be mostly attributed to their Year 9 Academic Year (since 2014 spent in the Greenways Campus). The figures highlighted are the Mean Stanines of the matched students. State Average for achievement in each of these tests is Stanine 5. Therefore, if a student learnt as predicted their achievement stanine should remain the same in subsequent testings as compared to others in the State. The table below compares the data from two years prior to the implementation of Greenways (when 94 was operating), with the five years that it has been running. The final columns highlight the value adding due to learning in the Greenways Campus. The data shows positive growth compared to the pre-Greenways years and general improvement across all areas.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE SYSTEM At Mentone Grammar, student learning is measured using a combination of internal assessment and external data received via comprehensive online reports. These are designed to enhance and validate internal assessments and build a more accurate picture of the strengths and weaknesses of each learner. The results from ESPT, NAPLAN and internal assessments form the basis for strategic planning within our Teaching and Learning Team and our Faculties. The three sets of data are entered into our Student Performance System which is utilised by all staff. The Student Performance System allows the School to monitor an individual’s progress over time, as well as identify areas of strength and areas of opportunity for improvement in our subject-based planning and delivery. At the beginning of 2017, we launched the Parent Dashboard of our Student Performance System. The Parent Dashboard provides parents with a detailed view of their son/daughter’s current learning profile. It includes full learning behaviour reporting as well as academic progress in the form of an interactive progress chart and details regarding all individual assessments. The Parent Dashboard is an up-to-date reference point to inform constructive and forward looking conversations between staff, parents and students.
NAPLAN AT MENTONE GRAMMAR Once again, testing occurred at Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 via the National Assessment Program, Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). This testing is conducted across Australia for every child in each of these year levels. The students are tested in five categories: Reading, Writing, Spelling, Numeracy and Grammar and Punctuation. These results are reported back to parents in terms of national levels and where students are ranked in terms of national averages.

Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2017
In 2017 the School Community enjoyed the culmination of an ambitious building plan that dramatically improved the entire Campus. The imposing new Creativity Centre is central to all year-level Campuses and sits alongside the Aquatics and Sports Centres to complete a well-rounded offering of exceptional cocurricular venues on Campus. The Centre has transformed the School and is now a community hub for the Arts and Technologies, not only within the School but for the entire Community. Additionally, on the northern edge of the Mentone Campus the Middle School gymnasium began a dramatic renovation to create a specialised Years 5 & 6 Learning Centre. Now open (2018), the Keith Jones Learning Centre is an attractive, progressive space that offers the best in architectural comfort and technical infrastructure. Mentone Grammar also owns 17 hectares of Playing Fields at Keysborough providing facilities for many community events and sports including tennis, hockey, rugby, soccer, football and cricket. In 2017, plans were also ratified for an extensive upgrade of facilities around the Playing Fields. This undertaking is planned for completion in 2019. The School also owns a beachside educational facility at Shoreham. The Shoreham Camp operates as an ‘extended classroom’ for experiential learning programs that include the marine environment, conservation and exploration and places of local geographical and historical significance. Mentone Grammar is committed to ongoing improvement of all facilities and grounds with respect to maintaining and planning for a safe and sustainable future.

STRATEGIC PLAN
IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD.
2016-2020 As part of the School’s Strategic Plan, 2016-2020, we have a number of programs or initiatives that have been introduced. To give context, towards the end of 2015 and throughout 2016, the focus was on developing new programs and initiatives and resourcing these programs. On track, 2017 was the year in which these new programs were introduced and 2018 will be a year of refinement and will begin our launch into the School’s Centenary celebrations. STRATEGIC PILLARS The Strategic Plan comprises six pillars and the following provides a summary of the developments that occurred in 2017, in relation to each of these pillars:
1 TEACHER QUALITY he newly appointed Head of Teaching Practice began her first complete year in the role. The Faculties T continued to focus on Visible Learning and associated Professional Learning with a focus on effective feedback. In total, 24 teaching staff took part in an individualised coaching program with mentors from Monash University and we joined the University of Melbourne Network of Schools and formed associated partnerships.
2 ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT The Student Dashboard continued to evolve and the School improved its collection of data. The VCAL pathway option began with the first group of Intermediate students qualifying at the end of 2017 and the Year 12 Study Centre was completed at the beginning of Term 4. Work commenced on the Years 5 & 6 Specialised Learning Centre (completed in 2018), and the School completed its curriculum mapping of Indigenous Education at Mentone Grammar.
3 COCURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES
I n 2017 the School completed its first year of the Mentone Grammar Sports Coaching Academy and a season of Creativity was presented as a cocurricular option for senior students in the specialties of Dance, Drama, Music, Visual Arts and Technology.
4 SAFE, HEALTHY, CARING ENVIRONMENT In 2017, a review of mentoring across the School was completed. This included a review of transitions across the School; RULER continued to be the main focus in Kindergarten through to Year 9 and Frogmore students looked at aspects of The Resilience Project. In that connection, students began ‘mindfulness’ sessions each morning in the Frogmore Senior Campus. School communications were improved with the launch of a new website, along with an updated version of the Learning Management System. Work also commenced on a Sustainability Review.
5 STRONG GOVERNANCE The School continued to maintain a very strong financial position, particularly in regard to enrolments and waiting lists, well into the future. The Board of Directors completed a Governance Survey as part of the Independent Schools Victoria suite of surveys for the first time and provided very positive feedback.
6 ENROLMENT PROFILE The School continued to be a single campus, community based coeducation school, with strong enrolments across each Campus of the School.

STUDENT WELLBEING
26
Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2017
SAFE, HEALTHY, CARING ENVIRONMENT Mentone Grammar recognises that student wellbeing and student learning outcomes are intricately linked, and understands the importance of fostering programs which enhance the development of students’ social and emotional competencies. In 2017, students from ELC to Year 9 developed their emotional intelligence using the RULER approach (created at Yale University) through the ongoing education and implementation of the RULER program which is designed to support a positive and safe school environment. Through tools such as the Class Charter, The Mood Meter, Meta Moment and the Blue Print, students built on their ability to recognise emotions in themselves and others, understand the causes and consequences of their emotions and developed tools to regulate their emotions. In the senior years, we saw a re-structure of the House system, where students were grouped vertically and allocated a mentor and a House Coordinator, enabling the ability to strengthen mentor and peer relationships. The mentor program across Years 5-12 focused on working with students to build positive relationships, develop empathy, emotional intelligence and enhance responsible decision making in order to help students learn how to manage challenging situations and develop their leadership skills. We commenced the year with a new Wellbeing Centre, accommodating psychologists, nurses, chaplains, careers counsellors and a learning enhancement team. This included a ‘one-stop shop’ for counselling support, careers advice, a health centre, helpful and accessible resources, spaces to relax, a kitchenette and small break out classroom spaces. The team prides itself on developing happy, healthy and high-achieving young people who can reach their full educational and personal potential. It was a busy and dynamic year, where students grew and participated in many new experiences whilst developing their skill base and wellbeing toolbox.
ACROSS THE SCHOOL, WELLBEING ISSUES ARE ADDRESSED VIA A RANGE OF PROGRAMS AND EVENTS, SUCH AS: Mindfulness practice Study Skills and exam preparation Peer Support Programs Growth mindset Yoga sessions Specialised lunchtime sessions Respectful Relationships sessions
