Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2016
FROM
BUILDING SUCCESS Mentone Grammar’s 2016 year began with pleasing VCE results that reflected the true endeavour and commitment of all involved to be their best. Triumph soon followed with our girls and boys sharing in six summer sports premierships and this feeling of success set the theme for the year to come.
THE PRINCIPAL With a firm commitment to the Six Pillars outlined in our 2016-2020 Strategic Plan, the School’s Executive continued to structure its research and resourcing around further developing: Teacher Quality Academic Development Cocurricular Opportunities Safe, Healthy and Caring Environments Strong Governance Enrolment Profile. At the time of writing, I am pleased to report that we have made calculable improvements in each of the six focus areas and the feedback from our Community is indeed positive. As part of Academic Development our School reconfigured the structure of the day and has now instituted a six-period per day timetable, improving student and teacher engagement and creating time for myriad professional development opportunities. Our teachers have also developed skills and a great understanding of Formative Assessment and the artful skill of providing effective feedback to students to improve learning. This complemented our work already established with student Learning Intentions and Success Criteria in our classrooms. In support of our Teaching and Learning improvements, the planning and implementation of a new Wellbeing Centre and the appointment of highly qualified counsellors, complemented our rollout of the emotional intelligence program, RULER, and our commitment to the emotional and social health of our Community. A restructure of our pastoral House system has also increased the mentorship of our senior and international students.
To broaden our breadth of offerings at the senior level of the School, we appointed a specialist teacher and began planning for the introduction of the VCAL pathway in readiness for our 2017 Year 11 students. The interest has been pleasing and the program is full. The program links closely to our Cocurricular programs and our indigenous connections in Lilla in the Northern Territory. Following consultation with the School Community, we also completed our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in 2016 where we worked under the guidance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to create an ongoing program that emphasises education, understanding and empathy. This cultural undertaking will enhance our well-established Middle Years Learning Journeys program to Central Australia. During 2016 we were also pleased to initiate a partnership with both Monash University and the University of Melbourne where our Head of Teaching Practice will lead a one-on-one coaching program with many Mentone Grammar teachers. Mentone Grammar has also been accepted as a member of the University of Melbourne Network of Schools, where our teachers now have the opportunity to work with leading educational researchers to share and develop ideas. Our Cocurricular Program was further developed with the launch of a Mentone Grammar Sports Academy that has attracted expert coaches to oversee and offer specialist coaching in both the Summer and Winter programs. This engagement has also generated reciprocal contracts with many elite sports clubs to further enhance expertise across all sports. All the while we watched with great anticipation as the majestic new Creativity Centre took shape on the Campus and
created much excitement for our Arts and Technologies students. The Centre is a stunning backdrop for the investment our School has made in the visual arts, technical crafts, music, theatre and dance. Within these great buildings we are very proud of the extraordinary level of teaching expertise that our School attracts. The diversity of academic knowledge and experience has been well reflected in student academic results, the breadth of cocurricular innovation and attention to wellbeing and community undertakings have rewarded all with confidence, strength and a great school spirit. My thanks go to the Chair of the Board, Mr Simon Appel OAM, and his Directors who provide valuable expertise as volunteers. In particular, I thank them and the Executive for their dedication in managing the rollout of the School’s Strategic Plan 2016-2020. This Community Report along with The Mentonian, summarise the strategic and business developments of the School for 2016. Once again, we are proud of the growth and achievements celebrated during this time in our history. Our proud Anglican heritage and School Values underpin our happy, healthy Community and our strong financial position continues to enable our unwavering commitment to educational excellence. I commend this report to you. LABORE ET HONORE

STUDENT OUTCOMES In 2016 we farewelled a studious Year 12 group after achieving the best results for the School since 2007. Led by dedicated staff, this year level excelled in so many ways across all areas of the School and all look to very bright futures ahead. The academic results of the group, once again, placed Mentone Grammar well in the Top 50 in the State whilst they still managed to embrace the cocurricular life of the School. These students were also great role models in House activities, Debating, Cadets, summer and winter Sport, on the stage, in art and in their service to others. All 171 students were welcomed into The Mentonians Association to maintain a lifelong connection with their School. Many will return as study tutors, on the sports field as coaches, and in the performing and visual arts. Nine of these students were also acknowledged as ‘Lifers’, having spent their entire schooling, from Kindergarten to Year 12, at Mentone Grammar.

We take academic success seriously and also we focus on the development of the whole person. My heartfelt thanks go to all their teachers, parents and families for supporting, motivating and challenging them. MAL CATER PRINCIPAL
Dux, with an ATAR of 99.9, Luc van Vliet was elated with the honour of being Dux. Luc’s advice to VCE students was to, ‘…have a balance in your life, immerse yourself in your subjects, and really engage with learning. Try to enjoy it – it’s easily the most fun and best year at school!’ Luc’s balanced approach to Year 12, combined with ‘diligence and hard work’ included a part time job, cross country running, socialising and playing music. He also noted that his teachers were all great. ‘They were passionate about their subjects and really inspired and engaged me in my learning. Teachers were always available as well as the library, sport and countless other programs.’
Luc accepted a place in the Chancellor’s Program at Melbourne University to complete an Arts degree. Courteney Munn was the top ranked girl at Mentone Grammar with an ATAR of 99.05. She says the secret to her success was: ‘Sleep and work and a daily routine of homework at lunchtime and 3-4 hours at night,’ but also added that her teachers were, ‘great, so encouraging and motivational. I felt very supported.’ Courteney is also aspiring to a professional basketball career – playing 5-6 days a week throughout Year 12. She is hoping to become a WNBL player. On top of her study of Biomedicine at Monash University, Courteney has an exciting and busy few years ahead. (Courteney pictured above)

SURVEYS
INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS VICTORIA
In recent years Mentone Grammar has participated in a range of surveys administered by the ISV. These include Student Satisfaction, Parent Satisfaction, Staff Satisfaction and Exit Surveys. The data obtained is used throughout the School as an important measure of community success and contributes to improvement planning. Viewing the data longitudinally allows the School to look for trends, evaluate initiatives and provide commendation where appropriate for community members.
STUDENT SATISFACTION SURVEY In Term 3 2016, 795 students from Years 5 to 11 completed online surveys where they were asked to respond to statements related to 15 domains and Overall Satisfaction. (Year 12s completed the valuable Exit Survey). The students used a scale where 0 referred to ‘completely disagree’ and 10 represented ‘completely agree’. The Mean scores appear in the table opposite and are compared to the Means achieved by the many participating independent schools. The MG Overall Mean continues to reflect a positive learning environment. It can reasonably be inferred that our students are happy to be part of the Mentone Grammar Community.
PARENT SATISFACTION SURVEY 2016 In 2016, 404 parents took the opportunity to provide valuable feedback by responding to statements to evaluate their perceptions of the School. The survey was developed by the ISV in collaboration with parents across Victorian Independent Schools. The focus groups developed eight domains in which the extent to which parents believe effective school practices being apparent could be evaluated. The results indicate that parents are pleased with the resources, teaching and learning environment that the School offers and are satisfied that their children are happy at Mentone Grammar. This table opposite compares, longitudinally, the Means obtained by Mentone Grammar as compared to ISV Means.

STUDENT PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT AT MENTONE GRAMMAR
Mentone Grammar has for several years utilised a comprehensive data collection system that has assessed students from Year 3 to Year 10 every school year, via external standardised assessment tools. This, along with internal assessment, has provided teachers, parents and students with valuable information supporting learners as they progress. Each year, all students in Years 4, 6, 8 and 10 undertake an externally conducted Education Skills Profile Test (ESPT). Students undergo testing in general reasoning, verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, mathematical performance, reading, spelling and written expression. Each of these areas is measured using a stanine scale. Stanine scores are derived from percentile ranks and help in overcoming the problem of changing units along the percentile rank scale. The stanine scale is divided into nine categories, for which digits 1 to 9 are used. A stanine of 9 indicates a very high performance relative to the reference group (Victorian students of same age), while a stanine of 1 indicates a very low relative performance. The results from our testing process were made available to parents and have been particularly informative for our teaching staff. Students who achieved high stanine results in specific areas were identified and then, through communication with the family, were invited to participate in our Enrichment Programs. The Enrichment Program sometimes involved students in this category being withdrawn from class to work with the Learning Enhancement Team or on occasions attend out of class sessions. Students with low stanine scores were also identified and participated in our Support Program designed by the Learning Enhancement Team. Ongoing support was usually developed in consultation with an educational psychologist and sometimes involved further detailed testing. The following table indicates our average stanine values for each of the tested areas in Years 4, 6, 8 and 10 via the ESPT tests. All tests were conducted during the 2016 school year. Students from other schools who enrolled to begin in Year 7 at Mentone Grammar were tested at the end of Year 6 and their results are included the Year 6 section of the table opposite.

PROGRESS REPORTS The Allwell Assessment Services data can give evidence of effective teaching and learning as matched cohorts are followed through the process. Below is the progression data for our 2016 Years 6 and 8 cohorts. Effective learning would result in similar stanine Means from test to test. The growth in Writing can be attributed to measures taken at MG in recent years to enhance the literacy program. Matched Year 6 cohort 2014 - 2016

GREENWAYS LONGITUDINAL Data used in this analysis comes from Achievement Tests conducted by Allwell Assessment Services. The students involved are all students who sat these assessments late in their Year 8 school year and again early in Year 10 (Matched Cohort). The assumption is that growth, or otherwise, can be mostly attributed to their Year 9 Academic Year (since 2014 spent in the Greenways Campus). The figures highlighted are the Mean Stanines of the matched students. State average for achievement in each of these tests is Stanine 5. Therefore if a student learnt as predicted, their achievement stanine should remain the same in subsequent testings as compared to others in the state. The table below compares the data from two years prior to the implementation of the Greenways model, with the four years that it has been running. The data shows positive growth compared to the pre-Greenways years. The table below compares the data from two years prior to the implementation of the current Greenways Program (blue column text), with the three years that it has been running. The final columns highlight the value-adding due to learning in the Greenways Campus.

Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2016
STUDENT PERFORMANCE SYSTEM Mentone Grammar receives comprehensive online reports designed to enhance and validate internal assessments, and support other external test data. The results from ESPT, NAPLAN and Internal assessment form the basis for strategic planning within our Teaching and Learning team and our Faculties. The three sets of data are also entered into our Student Performance System which is utilised by all staff. The system allows the School to monitor an individual’s progress over time, as well as identify areas of strength and also identify areas of opportunity for improvement in our subject curricula. During 2016 the School developed, and has since launched, the Parent Dashboard of our Student Performance System. The aim is to provide parents with a detailed view of their son or daughter’s current learning profile, including full learning behaviour data as well as academic progress in the form of an interactive progress chart. The Parent Dashboard is an up-to-date reference point to inform constructive and forward looking conversations between staff, parents and students.
NAPLAN AT MENTONE GRAMMAR 2016 Testing occurred at Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 via the National Assessment Program, Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN). This test is conducted across the nation for every child in each of these year levels. The students are tested in five categories: Reading, Writing, Spelling, Numeracy and Grammar and Punctuation. These results are reported back to parents in terms of national levels and where students are ranked in terms of national averages.

Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2016
FACILITIES In 2016 the School Community was the beneficiary of many ongoing upgrades to its Campus buildings and grounds. Most notably, the landscape altered dramatically with the building of a multi-level Creativity Centre on the northern edge of the Mentone Campus. The Centre has transformed the School and is now a community hub for the Arts and Technologies, not only within the School but for the entire Community. This imposing new Centre is central to all year-level Campuses and sits alongside the Aquatics and Sports Centres to complete a well-rounded offering of exceptional cocurricular venues on Campus. Mentone Grammar also owns 17 hectares of playing fields at Keysborough, providing facilities for many community events and sports including tennis, hockey, rugby, soccer, football and cricket. The School also owns a beachside educational facility at Shoreham. The Shoreham Camp operates as an ‘extended classroom’ for experiential learning programs that include the marine environment, conservation and exploration and places of local geographical and historical significance. In 2016, plans were also ratified for an extensive renovation of the Middle School gymnasium, to create a purpose-designed Years 5 and 6 Learning Centre. This undertaking is planned for completion in 2018. Mentone Grammar is committed to ongoing improvement of all facilities and grounds with respect to maintaining and planning for a safe and sustainable future.
FUNDRAISING Tax deductible gifts can be made to the School via the Mentone Grammar Foundation Building Fund. The Mentone Grammar School Foundation Limited gratefully accepts donations or bequests from the Mentone Grammar Community. Sponsorship opportunities have been created through the opening of the new Creativity Centre. Patrons and groups are able to purchase a named theatre seat or arts space within the Centre, which are all fully tax deductible. STRATEGIC PLAN
2016-2020
IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD. The traditional African proverb, ‘It Takes a Village to Raise a Child’ has been widely quoted. It is never more applicable than in today’s interconnected, global world. Today’s youth are growing up in a fast paced, multifaceted society that relies on strong partnerships between the family, the school and the community. These partnerships are necessary to allow students to develop the skills and receive the support needed to influence the opportunities and challenges they will face.
SIX STRATEGIC PILLARS Our Strategic Plan 2016 – 2020 contains six strategic pillars. In striving to further improve these areas of strength, we continue to provide our students, staff, families and School Community with a school of which they can be proud.
1 TEACHER QUALITY
Developing the structures to support continued teacher development.
2 ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT
Researching and implementing best practice in teaching and learning.
3 COCURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES
Providing students with a range of choice from an extensive cocurricular program.
22
Mentone Grammar COMMUNITY REPORT 2016
4 SAFE, HEALTHY, CARING ENVIRONMENT
Researching and implementing best practice in student wellbeing and staff support.
5 STRONG GOVERNANCE
Continuing our tradition of high level transparent governance and ensuring sustainability across the organisation.
6 ENROLMENT PROFILE
Continuing to promote Mentone Grammar as a coeducational school as our girls numbers continue to increase.
Mentone Grammar is in a dynamic phase in its history and, in 2023, will celebrate its Centenary. This Strategic Plan 2016-2020 is focused on the milestones that we aim to achieve in the lead up to the Centenary.
It is with much pleasure that I commend to you our Strategic Plan for Mentone Grammar 2016 - 2020. At its core is a commitment by the School to leadership in education for girls and boys, planning for our future and ensuring our policies and practices are aligned with our strategic intent.
