Welcome to Country
We acknowledge the Bunurong people of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Custodians of the lands where Mentone Grammar now stands and recognise that these have always been places of teaching and learning.
We pay respect to their Elders – past, present, and emerging and acknowledge the important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have played and will continue to play in our country.
Inclusivity Statement
We continually strive to be an inclusive community where we welcome and respect all people. We acknowledge the diversity of our School community and value the safety of all within it for it is through our differences, we learn and grow together.
Child Safe Standards
Mentone Grammar takes a zero-tolerance approach to any behaviours that jeopardise student safety and wellbeing as all students deserve to learn in a calm and focused environment where they feel safe.
The School has established strategies, practices, policies and procedures in order to comply with Ministerial Order 1359 and to embed a culture of child safety within the School.
Mentone Grammar appreciates that a student safe environment looks different for every student, and in delivering this, supports and respects the cultural safety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, students from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, as well as students with a disability, students who identify as LGBTQIA+, those with challenging home situations or who are otherwise vulnerable.
All Staff members, volunteers and contractors within Mentone Grammar share in responsibility for the prevention of child abuse and must:
- Have an understanding of Ministerial Order 1359
- Take all reasonable steps to protect children from abuse
- Adhere to all Mentone Grammar policies and procedures regarding child safety
- Adherence to the School Student Safety Code of Conduct
- Demonstrate behaviours in line with the Mentone Grammar values and Child Safe Standard requirements

THE HISTORY OF MG
Mentone Grammar’s progressive School culture is founded upon a rich legacy of social pioneers – honourable and resilient leaders who knew the value of an excellent education and were willing to work hard to achieve it.
As we celebrate our Centenary in 2023, we remain incredibly proud of our history and the progress we have made from our modest beginnings in 1923 when just 56 intrepid young boys stood on the lawn of Frogmore House – still ‘home’ to the current Principal and members of the School Executive – to the vibrant and dynamic ELC – Year 12 school of over 1,900 students we have today.
Over the decades, our School has continued to grow, develop and maintain a strong reputation for excellence in education. We thank every member of our community, past, present and future who keep this incredible legacy alive.

Mentone Grammar Staff InductionOUR CAMPUSES
MARY JONES EARLY LEARNING CENTRE
The Mary Jones ELC offers an inclusive play-based program where children learn by actively engaging, participating, and exploring within a safe environment.
Our program is designed to build a positive collaborative approach between each child, their family and ELC staff, who all have input into the program and its policies.
The children’s interests are reflected in the program so that the learning inspires them and meets their individual needs.
Based on thorough research, Mentone Grammar has chosen to draw on a range of perspectives to offer an effective program that truly reflects our inclusive, caring philosophy and offers the best ELC program possible.
Underpinning all our planning is the Mentone Grammar Learning and Teaching Framework, the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework and the National Early Years Learning and Development Framework.
EBLANA (YEARS FOUNDATION – 4)
In Eblana, we celebrate the uniqueness of each child, challenge them to reach their potential, and encourage them to become confident decision-makers who are prepared to take risks and explore their independence. During these vital five years from Foundation (Prep) to Year 4, our students are supported and guided through a broad range of learning opportunities.
With a primary focus on laying solid foundations in literacy and numeracy, our Learning and Teaching program is designed to inspire learning, encourage curiosity, questioning, and age-appropriate risk-taking.
In support, the Eblana Campus follows the RULER Wellbeing Framework of monitoring and articulating social and emotional intelligence.
Eblana is a double stream Campus, with 10 co-educational classes in the campus. Our specialist subject areas are Mandarin Chinese, Art, Music, PE and Library/Sustainability all taught by specialist teachers.
Students in Eblana also undertake a weekly swimming lesson and in Year 2 and 3 run a compulsory instrumental program.
OUR CAMPUSES (cont.)
RIVIERA (YEARS 5 – 6)
Riviera introduces our unique Together-Apart-Together model where students learn in gender-based environments. During this stage in their learning, they begin to develop a sense of who they are and how they contribute to their community
The Years 5 & 6 program challenges and encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. Our programs aim to build our students’ capacity to respond to challenges in innovative, informed ways, personally and as a collective.
Our project-based learning and extended investigations approach ensures communication, research, organisation, and thinking skills are embedded across the curriculum, thus enabling students to develop skills needed to respond and thrive in our interconnected, culturally diverse, and rapidly changing world.
BAYVIEW (YEARS 7 – 8)
At Bayview, we recognise that adolescence is a time of significant physical, emotional, and cognitive development. That's why we strive for a safe and nurturing environment that enables exploration, risk-taking, and personal growth. Our students have ample opportunities to develop self-efficacy, self-regulation, and emotional intelligence skills, empowering them to navigate the challenges of adolescence with confidence.
We encourage our students to embrace their unique identities and foster independence. Making mistakes is an essential part of the learning process. Our growth mindset approach emphasises the importance of accepting feedback with an open mind and using it to fuel personal and academic growth.
We aim to spark curiosity and engagement in our students through a holistic, challenging, and inclusive approach to education. Our programs help students develop positive, independent learning habits and routines while building core learning behaviours through organisation, time management, and balancing competing demands. This sets our Bayview students up for success in questioning the world around them and contributing positively to their community.
OUR CAMPUSES (cont.)
GREENWAYS (YEAR 9)
Our dynamic Greenways Campus is a successful model of diverse and interactive engagement. In keeping with the School’s Together-Apart-Together model, we provide separate gender classes, with the exception of some selected co-curricular activities.
Independence and creativity are key skills to support our students’ transition both through and beyond school. Our strong academic program includes a broad offering of subjects that allow students to begin to explore their areas of passion in the vast elective subjects on offer. Elective subjects vary in course length and have students working in co-educational classes, supporting them to work with their peers in preparation for their co-educational classes in Frogmore.
Personal growth is significant in Greenways due to the learning opportunities that are provided outside the formal academic classroom allowing students to learn and find success in a multitude of ways. The academic program is supported by exciting Learning Journeys that develop personal growth and resilience. Often profound, these Learning Journeys are designed to challenge our students and take them out of their comfort zone to keep all our Year 9s developing and learning to their full potential.
FROGMORE (YEARS 10 – 12)
Frogmore is a dynamic Campus that supports our Senior students in Years 10 – 12 to customise their learning experience and pursue their own definition of Happy, Healthy and High Achieving.
Frogmore students work closely with a team of VCE specialist teachers and wellbeing staff who are highly regarded for the positive relationships they build with students, based on mutual respect and genuine care.
The Campus offers a full complement of Year 10 subject selections including VET subjects as a precursor to VCE studies in Years 11 & 12.
The Year 10 program enables students to explore personal interests and develop skills, knowledge and understanding in increasingly sophisticated ways prior to VCE selections.
The sequential Years 11 & 12 VCE program delivers a broad, comprehensive range of subjects including selected VCE/VET offerings along with an alternate VCE –Vocational Major (formerly VCAL) pathway.
In support of our strong academic culture, the Senior School Library offers wideranging student resources and a unique after-school Tutors Program, staffed with former high-achieving Mentonians, across all subject specialties.

SCHOOL INFORMATION
OUR STUDENTS
Students benefit from a dynamic co-educational environment that encourages and respects diversity. They experience opportunities to work and socialise as reflected in the world around them.
To create the optimum learning environment, classes are co-educational from ELC –Year 4 and from Years 10 – 12, with students learning in single-gender classes through Years 5 – 9. This period of early adolescence can be a vulnerable time for children as they experience great change and develop their sense of self as they move towards being a teenager and an adult.
In recognition of this, our Years 5 – 9 program is tailored to the unique needs of boys and girls during this critical time in their physical, social, and emotional development.
STAFF COMMUNITY
Mentone Grammar has a vibrant and welcoming community of parents, alumni (Mentonians) and partners who provide an extended network of support for our students and our School as a whole.
One of the enduring comments we receive is about the incredible community we have here at Mentone Grammar. It is one of the reasons we have become the school of choice across bayside and the reason our Mentonians, past staff and community partners remain connected to us.
Our full calendar of events offers many ways for our community to connect and engage with the School, and each other.
This includes Parents & Friends events, School productions, sporting events, as well as special events, and parenting seminars delivered by leading health professionals and discipline experts.
CADETS
The Mentone Grammar Army Cadet Unit (MGACU) has a long and proud tradition having been established at the School in 1943. It now represents the largest schoolbased Unit in Victoria.
MGACU is part of the extensive Australian Army Cadets (AAC) program, which constitutes the largest youth development program in the country. The goals of the AAC are driven by its core values of Courage, Initiative and Teamwork.
Leadership is highly valued in the Unit and being part of the Mentone Cadets provides a unique opportunity for Senior students to develop leadership skills, together with expertise in the areas of fieldcraft, first aid and navigation.
SCHOOL INFORMATION (cont.)
LEARNING JOURNEYS
Our program of experiential learning begins with our youngest students in the ELC who explore Mentone Beach or enjoy the excitement of wildlife visitors to the classrooms.
In Eblana, students are immersed in literacy and numeracy, together with science and environmental studies, humanities, technologies, language, culture and more –all of which are supported by a range of incursions and excursions.
The School’s Learning Journeys program takes an age and stage approach, building on previous camps and experiences to encourage and support students to continue to build resilience and confidence, and advance their social and emotional growth. The program begins in Year 3, when students explore the local area with overnight stays at our beachside Shoreham Camp on the Mornington Peninsula.
THE MENTONIANS ASSOCIATION
Our Mentonians are the lifeblood of our Mentone Grammar community and our lasting legacy. Upon leaving the School, all students – no matter their tenure – and any staff who have served more than 10 years at the School, automatically become Mentonians and can share in the many benefits of a lifelong connection with this special community of alumni around the world.
PERFORMING ARTS
We are immensely proud of the high standard of tuition on offer that results in a calendar filled with joyous stage performances that showcase the passion and talents of our community. Our program enables students to experience a dynamic array of performing arts opportunities that provides for diversity of interests, styles and skill levels.
Talented, inspirational and highly skilled staff facilitate an engaging and innovative list of classes all aimed at preparing our learners for high quality performances and a lifelong passion for the arts. A successful key feature of our program is the integration of Music, Dance and Drama through classroom activities, co-curricular programs and within private tuition sessions.
SCHOOL INFORMATION (cont.)
MUSIC
For students who want to explore their musical talents and opportunities beyond the core Performing Arts curriculum, there are choirs, ensembles, concert bands, jazz bands, the orchestra, and so much more to inspire our performers.
Students are also able to experiment and develop their own music using the technologies available in our state-of-the-art Creativity Centre performance spaces.
Our busy events calendar provides endless opportunities for all our performers to present music and song from across the musical spectrum. Individual instrumental tuition is available in addition to the class instrumental lessons offered in all campuses of the School. Expert tuition from our music tutors is provided in piano, strings, woodwind, brass, voice, guitar and percussion.
SPORT
Sport and physical activity are embedded in the Mentone Grammar culture, so students develop an appreciation of their health and bodies in the Early Years while also reinforcing the values of teamwork, cooperation, accountability, being active and having fun. Students also develop fundamental movement and motor skills that are transferable across sports and other life activities.
Our sequential sports program provides opportunities for students of all abilities from Years 3 – 12 to benefit from our elite coaching programs, established through partnerships with highly credentialled coaches, talent pathway programs and professional sporting clubs.
