Most medical and dental practices are ill prepared for disasters. In addition to the enormous difficulty in returning to business following a disaster, OSHA and HIPAA rules now require that medical and dental practices have a plan of action that will ensure that patient data will not be lost and to also have a plan in place to provide a return to care for its patients. The final HIPAA Security Rule mandates that medical and dental practices assess which types of disasters could damage their systems that contain electronic protected health information and that they need to develop policies and procedures that will mitigate these risks by providing a plan for backup, storage, and recovery. In determining the possible disasters that could impact their practices, all possible disasters must be considered, even those with low risk. Once this is done, a plan of action needs to be documented that will detail the procedures that need to be done prior to any possible disaster, those that need to be performed when any disaster might be imminent, and those required following the disaster. This plan will need to lay out the jobs that will need to be handled by the different staff members. Failure to have such a plan in place can lead to fines and even jail time.
