THEHARPER RESIDENCE
Mr. Paul and Mrs. Amanda Harper are looking to design their new downtown home. The adaptive reuse building is a brick and timber structure formerly used as a manufacturing facility just west of Chicago’s South Loop. Mr. and Mrs. Harper both work downtown. Mr. Harper is a restaurant owner and professional chef and Mrs. Harper is a professional dance teacher. The Harpers would like to incorporate their passionate lifestyle into their permanent residence, complete with a spacious chef’s kitchen, small dance studio, and large wine storage. They dream for a functional and livable space to entertain, live, and work. Utilizing the space efficiently, an open plan layout takes advantage of the sunlight, the stunning views, and the high ceilings. The exposed brick structure and wood beams keep the downtown feel to the space. A sleek, glass paneled mezzanine looks over the main level and holds the master suite and the guest room/ study. Keeping the color palate muted with neutral tones, the space feels modern, and doesn’t take away from the original architectural details. High end granite counter tops saturate the kitchen, and wet bar. Refurbished hard wood flooring is kept throughout to capture the beauty of the suburban loft. A custom built, glass enclosed wine cellar acts as a focal point in the center with barn doors on either side to access from both living quarters. Refurbished flooring, low VOC paints, and low-flush toilets round out this interior’s green specifications. This environment is unified and sustainable. The Harper’s will be able to live and work in the comfort of their own home, and still find time to do the things they enjoy around the people they love.

ID402 HISTORY OF DESIGN III:
This studio presents an in-depth study of the architecture and furniture developments of several major non-western cultures. Religious, philosophical, and social beliefs and customs are emphasized while construction methods, building materials, motifs, fabrics, and decorative arts are explored.
For the final project of this course, I was required to design an interior space based off of historical reference from a non-western culture of my choice. The design of this living room was inspired by the culture of Morocco. I was driven by the attention to detail in the architecture of Morocco. Some of the key elements seen in the space are the pouf, end table, day bed, and hanging lanterns. These furnishings were specialized to the Moroccan culture.

THEALTERNATIVE LOUNGE
For Inspiration in designing a Night Club in an existing building located in Chicago’s most trendy spot for popular restaurants and bars, I’ve turned to the work of an artist by the name of Wassily Kandinsky. Wassily Kandinsky is a Russian painter and art theorist that lived in France. He had a very determined and art-driven mindset which let him to create a series of large achievements along the years 1911-1939. The artist balances a combination of controlled chaos, using bold lines; curved and straight. Geometric and abstract shapes keep a harmonious rhythm which only add to the visual interest. Spirit, emotion, and unity is felt in his work; which is what I plan to use in my design for the Night Club- “The Alternative” Inspired by the alternative rock music genre. The controlled chaos of Kandinsky’s paintings is also what comes to mind when listening to this type of music. Produced in Autodesk Revit
