FEATURED INTERNATIONAL ARTIST

SERGIO BUSTAMANTE Born in 1942 in Sinaloa, Mexico, Sergio Bustamante is a sculptor and painter best known for his depictions of surreal human figures and animals in paper maché, wood, bronze, and ceramic. Bustamante was orphaned as a child and raised by his Chinese grandfather, José Chong. Growing up he used his vivid imagination to create imaginary friends with triangle-shaped faces and those later became the signature of many of his designs.

In 2008 interview, Bustamante stated, “My grandfather was the key figure in my life. He took me to the Buelna market every day and bought me a toy, which he hid. Since the house was very big I spent the whole morning trying to find it and only then was it mine. I think that awakened a sense of fantasy, and above all, it made me addicted to searching.” Bustamante moved to Guadalajara at an early age and went on to study architecture at the University of Guadalajara. Before finishing his career, he left to study art and in 1972 moved to Amsterdam. He returned to Guadalajara two years later and became a leader of the Tlaquepaque art district in that city. His works are in public and private collections thought the world. Mecado369 is proud to offer a number of Sergio Bustamante’s whimsical and fun art pieces in a variety of mediums and uniquely designed pendants, bracelets, rings, cufflinks and other jewelry.

Featured Local Artist

FEATURED LOCAL ARTIST

MANUEL SARMIENTO Manuel Sarmiento is an Oak Cliff native and Sunset High School graduate. His metal sculptures have a distinctive style that can be recognized in his public art throughout Bishop Arts and other installations throughout the city, state and even internationally. Manuel’s monumental “A Higher Standard of Learning” is a 9-foot-high modern-looking chair with an abstract person sitting, reading a book which was commissioned by Mt. View College in celebration of its 40th anniversary.

and become a full time artist. One of his biggest inspirations is his daughter Monica, who sketches some of the figures for him and has now also learned welding. Manuel takes pride in using recycled metals and often finds his materials in local recycling plants. Being eco-friendly goes along with caring his personality and art vision of love, family and celebrating the human experience.

Having worked as a welder in a body shop and tinkering with discarded metals he designed into art sculptures for a few years, his friends and family finally encouraged him to make the leap

Mercado369 has previously featured Manuel in our free second-Saturday Art Talk workshop series and is proud to offer his unique sculptures in our gallery.

AFRO-MEXICAN

FOLK ART

Twenty-five years ago in the southern coast of Mexico, in the states of Oaxaca and Guerrero, a priest named Father Glyn Jemmott Nelson arrived from Trinidad and established the Cimarron Cultural Center. This area, called the Costa Chica, is recognized for isolated communities of direct African descent dating back three centuries and which to this date still celebrate customs, festivals, foods and dance 36

MERCADO369

unique to this region and unknown to many, even within Mexico. Recognizing the need to develop economic opportunities for the youth in the region, and most importantly to create a sense of identity and pride in their African ancestry, Father Glyn launched what became the start of a Folk Art movement based expressing the Afro-Mexican experience in art. The Cimarron’s, as they became known, were the young artists from the various communities of the region, many just 13-15 years old, that received art training in painting, wood engravings and sculpture. Their works depicted the centuries of history from the early African experience to the current daily life of the agricultural workers and fishermen, recording the festivals and rituals of

the region in a way never captured before. What evolved from this art movement resulted in waking a self-awareness and pride in the region that eventually led to political activism and the demanding of recognition by the Mexican government of the “black” ethnicity in the 2020 census for the first time since 1810. Many of the young artists, like Yuye Hernandez, who was born without arms and paints holding the brush with her feet, Ivann Hernandez Piza and others, also became political leaders. The Center also benefited from long-term association with internationally acclaimed artists such as Tomas Pineda Matus, Shinzaburo Takeda, Fernando Andriacci and others who served as instructors and mentors for these talented youth before the center eventually closed after Mario

Guzman left to pursue other artistic interests. Among the most notable other artists that emerged from this region include Baltazar Castellano Melo, Aydeé Rodríguez López, and Elder Avila. Mercado369 is proud to be the first to have assembled an extensive collection of AfroMexican Folk Art directly from the region that includes pieces from all of these artists and instructors.

Afro-Mexican Folk Art

FEATURED AFRO-MEXICAN FOLK ARTIST

AY D E É

R O D R I´ G U E Z L O´ P E Z Folk Art is defined as conveying a communities’ authentic cultural identity, rather than an individual artistic identity. No one represents the Afro-Mexican cultural experience as vividly or as literally as Aydeé Rodríguez López. She has taken generations of lore and family history and recreated scenes of daily life sparing none of the pain and hardship. This is presented beautifully in a canvas that brings to life the sights and sounds of that era as if we were eyewitnesses.

relative to relative. She suffered abuse as a young teen in Mexico City and daily hardships. However, that did not discourage her as she fought back with an uncommon determination. She was able to save enough money to provide a college education for all her three younger siblings. Later, as she cared for her dying grandmother, Aydeé would doodle and draw to pass the time. Her grandmother recognized this was a talent that brought Aydeé pleasure and with that encouragement she pledged to “draw every day for the rest of her life.” Aydeé was 38 years old at the time and now, decades later, has still kept that promise to her grandmother. We are fortunate to have recorded Aydeé explain the details and meanings behind her canvases. These explanations detail the historic and cultural importance of these unique works available at Mercado369.
