You don’t have to be fitter than everyone else
W
e all have goals. Sometimes, though, those goals are not attained because you aspire to reach to someplace unattainable. Maybe you look up to a friend who runs marathons, or he or she has the discipline to exercise before dawn — and these are simply exercise routines you cannot keep. Don’t compare yourself to anyone. Maybe all you can muster is plugging in the newest DVD fitness routine in your living room. And while that seems mundane, that’s about all you can really invest in your busy life. That’s ok! Every day is a step closer to your goal, and don’t forget to admire each step. It’s hard work to be fit — a big commitment — so don’t feel bad about that. Feel bad if you don’t try. Being fitter than you were the day before is actually what really matters. Even 30 minutes a day can produce results that don’t just make you look

better, but produces health benefits. Start slow, chart your progress, don’t quit, eat clean, put the cigarettes down, drink occasionally, and include time for fitness like you would any other important event in your life. Local girl scout finalist in ‘Got Milk?’ photo contest COURTESY OF GIRL SCOUTS OF CALIFORNIA AND THE CALIFORNIA MILK PROCESSOR BOARD
T
he California Milk Processor Board, creator of the “Got Milk?” campaign, and the California Girl Scouts have announced the names of 24 finalists from the Golden State in the “Got Milk?” photo contest, including one girl from Bakersfield. The contest received more than 300 entries. Bakersfield girl scout, Amaya Johnson-Wood, 7 — part of the Girl Scouts of Central California South council — was named a finalists. Amaya’s winning photo included the caption: “Milk — it helps me sell Girl Scout cookies!” Among these 24 lucky young ladies, three will be named grand prize winners. Those three will be featured together on new “Got Milk?” Girls Scouts commemorative billboards to be unveiled early February in the girls’ hometowns. The contest, which ran from Nov. 5 to Dec. 17, was open to all currently registered Girl Scouts in kindergarten through 12th grades, belonging to one of the eight councils in California. Girl Scouts had to submit a photo with a caption of no more than eight words showcasing the contest prompt: “How have Girl Scouts and milk helped them become strong, healthy and confi-

dent?” “We received over 300 entries from Girl Scouts from all eight councils in California,” said Steve James, executive director of the processor board. “It was great to see how this contest sparked creativity among the girls and it reminded Californians that the values of Girl Scouting and milk go handin-hand.” The Girl Scouts photo contest was inspired by an iconic print campaign that ran 15 years ago. It featured an adorable 10-year-old Girl Scout who made an impression on Californians with her iconic uniform and an armful of cookie boxes, provoking the question, “Got Milk?” All 24 contest finalists will each receive a camp scholarship worth $350. The three grand prize Girl Scouts winners to be announced at the end of the month will each receive a $500 U.S. Savings Bond, and will be featured together on a billboard (or comparable advertising media) in their hometowns throughout the month of February — just in time for cookie sale season. About Girl Scouts in California Girl Scouts, the preeminent leadership development organization for girls, is celebrating its 100th anniversary during 2012. Girl Scouts is the

About the California Milk Processor Board The board was established in 1993 to make milk more competitive and increase milk consumption in California. Awareness of Got Milk? is more than 90 percent nationally and it is considered one of the most important and successful campaigns in history. Got Milk? is a federally registered trademark that has been licensed by the national dairy boards since 1995. The board’s Spanish-language campaign began in 1994 using the tagline “Familia, Amor y Leche” (Family, Love and Milk). The “Toma Leche” (Drink Milk) campaign replaced it in 2006, following a growing trend in Hispanic food advertising that uses wit and humor to reach audiences. More information: www.gotmilk.com.
