Bowled over by local sports teams ... and more

G

reetings sports fans — and a Happy New Year to all. Once again it's time to dust off those workout shoes and start burning off the holiday excess. It’s wonderful that we live in a health-conscious society. Leastwise, that is my optimistic opinion! Man, the feeling one gets after a good workout is phenomenal. You're ready to take on the world. And any type of workout will produce this euphoric feeling, be it taking a long walk, pumping some iron or running on the treadmill. Any cardio-vascular work is of particular benefit. If you are not used to any type of regimented workout program you will be pleasantly surprised if you do choose to embark on a mission for better health. As good as it is for the body, physical exercise is just as important for the mind. And for the soul! It’s quite amazing that once a person gets Sports columnist started and begins to reap those aforementioned benefits, the healthy lifestyle becomes addicting and puts more smiles on one’s face. So, if you need a New Year’s resolution, there it is. Life. Enjoy it. Well, since we’ve just spoken of exercise let’s take a quick run around town and see how our local sports scene is faring. The men’s basketball team over at Cal State Bakersfield is hovering around .500 re their winning percentage. Tough, last-second, disputed foul-call loss to New Mexico State was rather disheartening. CSUB kept up with number 17th-ranked UNLV for a half but eventually succumbed before a nice turnout of 3,325 at Rabobank Arena. Keep your heads up boys. The stiff D-I competition will pay dividends in the long run. The Lady ‘Runners are having a down season. One has to remember that they lost the bulk of their starters from last year’s superb team due to graduation. No doubt here that first-year coach Greg

MICHAEL ELLIOTT

McCall will right the ship in time. The BC men’s basketball squad is having a bit of a rough go as well, however, the Lady ‘Gades are putting together a fine season as they sport a 9-5 overall record and are a nifty 2-0 in Western State Conference play. The Bakersfield Condors have hit a rough patch. Here’s hoping the new year will bring better fortune their way. The professional Bakersfield Jam NBA D-League basketball squad is having a go at the Western Conference lead early on. They are playing very competitively and sporting an above .500 mark and representing our city in fine fashion. The high school football season ended with BHS going undefeated and the prep hoopsters are just getting into the swing of things. If you have the opportunity to support our local sports teams, please do so. Let’s go bowling! Go to your closet, dust off the old ball bag and ... whoops. Wrong bowling! Thirty-five collegiate football bowl games. From Dec. 17, 2011 to Jan. 9, 2012 footballs were flying everywhere. How about some takes on some of the more interesting games? Boise State gets snubbed from a BCS bowl game then hammers Arizona State in QB Kellen Moore’s final game. He has the most wins in history of any collegiate quarterback. Air Force goes for the two-point conversion at the end of the game and fails, handing Toledo the 42-41 victory. Washington scores 28 unanswered points and still gets beat by Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III and his Baylor mates. Michigan State and Georgia go three overtimes in State’s 33-30 win. Oregon was just a bit too fast for Wisconsin in their 45-38 Rose Bowl tilt. The most entertaining matchup came via the Fiesta Bowl where Oklahoma State edged Stanford in OT 41-38. Tell ya, Oklahoma State’s wideout Justin Blackmon is a man among boys. Reminds me of the Detroit Lions Allpro wide receiver Charles Johnson. And finally, #2 Alabama rolled a listless, consensus #1 LSU Tiger team 21-0 in the BCS Championship game. While most of the bowl games were high-scoring affairs, the Crimson Tide literally stuffed LSU defensively to avenge an earlier loss this season. Whew! After all of those games, I’m feeling rather bowled over.

Bakersfield Dragons Squirts take 2nd at Jr. Ducks Fest COURTESY OF WWW.MYBAKERSFIELDSPORTS.COM he Bakersfield Dragons Squirts brought home the second place trophy from the Jr. Ducks Fall Festival in Anaheim recently. The Dragons won their first three games, beating the San Diego Saints 7-3, LA Hockey (2) 71, and the Jr. Coyotes of Phoenix 3-1. They lost in the finals 4-3 to the Pasadena Maple Leafs 2.

The 14 goals scored in the first two games earned the Dragons a spot in the championship game. Noah Carpenter said he was proud of how his team played in those games. “I thought (they were) going to be pretty close, but then we smoked them,” Carpenter said. “It feels good.” Several players contributed to the Dragons scoreboard during the tournament. Dante Petrini led the

team in scoring with seven goals. Matthew Perri and Jagger Fair netted four each. Logan Mears scored three, while defensemen Chaz Catallo and Kyle Kolthoff got one a piece. Jacob Clanahan said the Dragons enjoyed playing on the Olympic-sized ice in Anaheim. “I think when we’re on bigger ice, we get more goals,” Clanahan said.
