Making small changes can lead to big results in your health

didn’t really need one more reason to workout, until I read the stats on type 2 diabetes. Type 2 isn’t prejudiced — 15 percent of type 2 diabetics aren’t overweight. When that slice of cake hits your stomach, your body’s digestive system begins to transform the cake’s carbs into a simple sugar called glucose. Once that sugar enters your bloodstream, your pancreas squirts out insulin, a chemical that unlocks muscle cells and allows them to suck in glucose to use as short-term energy. Sounds like a thorough plan our body has to navigate through to help keep it running smoothly — but we are getting into the way of what our bodies were meant to do. Now enters slice-of-cake number two — like a singer doing on encore, and maybe even another one after that. It doesn’t have to be cake, either. It could be French toast, high-sugar cereal, muffins, etc. Regardless of surgery food going in, your system is now overloaded and your poor pancreas is pumping like crazy, over and over again. But this time, your muscle cells ignore the insulin. This is a serious problem called “insulin resistance.” Eventually your pancreas can peter out entirely, leading to too much sugar in the blood, also known as type 2 diabetes. Type 1 Diabetes, which can develop in early childhood, is a much rarer autoimmune genetic disorder in which the immune system attacks the pancreas and hinders insulin production all together. According to Women’s Health, excessive sugar intake and obesity are the leading causes of type 2

diabetes, but they are not the only ones. Even a slim body can hide a big secret. And genetics also play a role in type 2. Looking hard at a family’s history is a part of “type 2 DNA” testing. Some folks are genetically predisposed to be extra sensitive to extra calories. Now lets talk about the way to CUT YOUR CHANCES! Hit the weights: Increasing your lean body mass could lower your insulin resistance and drop your odds of developing prediabetes. According to Sheri Colberg-Ochs Ph.D., an exercise professor at Old Dominion University: “for every 10 percent increase in muscle mass, prediabetes risk Fitness columnist fell about 12 percent.” So, adding three days of resistance training into your weekly workout plan can help significantly. Fiber up: Eating some rough stuff isn’t just good for digestion — it also curbs post-meal sugar spikes buy slowing down the flow of glucose in the bloodstream. When you crave something sweet, try a pear, apple or raspberries — and try brown rice instead of white. All this change up can cut your risk by 11 percent if eating just two or more servings a week. Easy to do! Spice it up: Cinnamon lowers blood sugar levels,

A balanced meal will pay off with a healthier body and help prevent diabetes. According to the American Board of Family Medicine, the red stuff is rich in polyphenols which may help insulin do its job. Sprinkle on oatmeal, coffee or anything that needs a sweet-kick. Richard Bernstein, M.D, suggests that many of the slim women diagnosed with type 2 don’t actually have the disease. Rather, they could actually have an undiagnosed case of Type 1. “Many adults show symptoms of both.” Extreme

thirst, blurred vision, high blood sugar can be similar to Type 1. “Some doctors don’t even test for diabetes unless the patient is obese,” he says. The best bet, of course, is to prevent type 2 symptoms altogether. Even if you have type 2 prone DNA, the disease is almost entirely preventable if you make smart lifestyle choices! Type 2 can never be reversed — but prediabetes can. Approximately 93 percent of prediabetics don’t even know they’re sick. Some other tips: Watch for sugar in low-fat salad dressings, breakfast cereals, and vitamin drinks. High-fructose sugar converts into visceral fat — the fat around the organs we can’t see. Eat as little added sugar as possible each day and stick with lowglycemic-index carbs like fruits, veggies and whole grains. Making small changes can lead to big results in your health! onsider this — it’s estimated that nearly 50 percent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions. With a population of over 300 million, that’s close to 150 million people looking forward to future change. Just weeks into 2012 however, and for many, the plans “to get more organized,” “pay off debt,” or the ever popular (and costly) “get in better shape,” have come and gone faster than a new workout video. Here’s another astounding statistic. The Super Bowl draws a viewing audience of approximately 111 million people, whether they watch for the pregame festivities, halftime entertainment or much anticipated commercials. And since its February, let’s not forget that on Valentine’s Day, around 198 million roses are grown and sold. These numbers are astounding when we examine them in the context of cultural and social events. Yet, they should give us perspective when it comes to the way we approach and respond to something just as important: a leading cause of death in our community. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is an electrical malfunction of the heart’s natural rhythm. It need-

lessly afflicts nearly 300,000 Americans each year, including children, teens and professional athletes. Though it sounds similar, SCA is not the same as a heart attack. We know how to prevent and respond to SCA, and the keys to increasing survival can be found in bystander intervention and improved emergency response. Imagine if each person who made a New Year’s resolution knew how to perform CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED). Or if, instead of roses, 198 million AEDs were deployed in schools, churches, shopping malls and other public gathering places across the country. February is American Heart Month, an annual designation by Congress for Americans to become more informed about heart health and thus a timely opportunity for us to focus on the nation’s leading cause of death. This year, Congress is doing its part to increase awareness of SCA and its survival rate through several important pieces of legislation. Representatives Lois Capps (CA) and Betty Sutton (OH) are spearheading support of the “Teaching Children to Save Lives Act” and “Josh Miller HEARTS Act,” respectively, which will provide grants to teach students CPR and fund the placement of AEDs

in schools. As individuals, we have as much power as Congress to affect change — and can do so quickly at the local level. Discover where AEDs are located in your area; see if your child’s school teaches CPR/AED; call your member of Congress and urge them to support these lifesaving pieces of legislation. To schedule a CPR/AED training course or find an SCA survivor to speak before your group, visit the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association at: www.suddencardiacarrestbakersfield.org. Taking the time now to focus on SCA may not be as fun as cheering on your favorite football team or enjoying a romantic dinner for two, but it undoubtedly can help save your life or the life of a loved one. Corinne Ruiz is the leader of the Bakersfield Chapter of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association, a nonprofit focused on SCA prevention and response. Its members are SCA survivors, medical professionals, emergency responders and patient/community advocates all dedicated increasing awareness of SCA, expanding public access to AEDs and other lifesaving devices and educating the public on cardiovascular healthy lifestyles.
