Project Linus gives Volunteers provide warm blankets BY MIRA PATEL Community contributor

M

ichele Willis — chapter coordinator of Project Linus for Kern, Tulare and Fresno counties — strives to give back to local children in need with her “blanketeers,” or volunteers. Wanting to give back after Hurricane Katrina, Willis took to the Internet to research organizations that were accepting donations. She stumbled on Project Linus and decided to start a local chapter in November 2005. The program was named from the security blanket-toting character from the Peanuts comic strip, Willis said. “We are a volunteer based nonprofit that provides new, handmade blankets and afghans to children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in

need,” she said. While Willis helps to facilitate and lead the local chapter, she couldn’t do it without her assistant coordinator, Millie Abel, and the local volunteers. A core group of nearly three dozen women meet every month to turn in blankets. Church groups, scout troops, individuals, businesses and other organizations also volunteer their time. It’s important to note that each blanket goes through a rigorous “blanket pass inspection,” Willis said. Each blanket receives a special poem, goes through a metal detector to ensure no pins are left behind, are sized, and then bagged for delivery. “All blankets stay local unless there is a major catastrophe in the nation,” she said. “Even then, we make certain CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

The Bakersfield Homeless Center’s (BHC) Job Development program has been instrumental in helping individuals, such as Cathy and David Orn, to achieve success in the job market.

Collaboration between city and homeless center changing lives BY CAROLANN WOOTON Community contributor

athy Orn and her husband David had been residents of the Bakersfield Homeless Center in the past. “Back in 2003, they did not offer all the programs for GED or job development that they offered when we came back this time,” Orn said. When circumstances in 2009 brought the couple back to the center, Orn was excited to take advantage of these new opportunities. In January 2010, she interviewed to join the City of Bakersfield’s Green Waste crew, a new program available after to a special contract between Bakersfield and the center. “At Green Waste I gained a better understanding of my capabilities,” Orn said. “I found I could become a lead and manage a crew of six work-

ers.” But Orn did not stop there. She took her new confidence gained from working at Green Waste and become a part-time cook in the homeless center’s kitchen. When a position managing the donations warehouse became available, Orn had proven her value as an employee. “I love what I do. I can help others,” she said laughing. “I can pay my bills!” Orn’s husband, David, is also a part of the Green Waste crew. They have their own home, and security that they have not experienced in years. “The last year or so has been special year for me,” Orn said, her face glowing. “I was promoted to work in the warehouse, I have been seven years sober, I took my first vacation, and we have a relationship with our CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

COURTESY OF SAN JOAQUIN COMMUNITY HOSPITAL new Starbucks Coffee Company kiosk opened Feb. 1 at San Joaquin Community Hospital — the first of its kind for the worldwide chain. The walk-up, outdoor facility is in front of the hospital, near the gazebo area. It is set-up as primarily a “grab-and-go” retail shop open to San Joaquin hospital employees, as well as the public. Adding the Starbucks kiosk, which will soon include outdoor seating, is yet another improvement to the 254-bed hospital grounds, said Jarrod McNaughton, San Joaquin’s vice-president of marketing and development. “Bringing a Starbucks kiosk on to our hospital campus is very exciting,” McNaughton said. “We see this as another

convenience we can offer to our visitors — and we all know how popular Starbucks coffee drinks are!” Starbucks representatives and San Joaquin officials worked closely together on the details of the project. This location, although not owned by Starbucks, is a fully-licensed store, offering a full Starbucks menu. All of the baristas, who are San Joaquin employees, underwent extensive Starbucks training. Hours for the Starbucks kiosk at San Joaquin Community Hospital are: • 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday. • 5 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday. • Closed Saturday in observance of the Sabbath • 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday

Some of the most memorable moments Willis has experienced since her association with Project Linus was winning the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce’s “humanitarian Michele Willis group of the year” award for 2007 and 2008, and also the memories she has gathered while delivering blankets with her six children. While they can no longer deliver the blankets due to the H1N1 virus regulations, she explains it was rewarding teaching them the importance of community service. It’s important to understand that Project Linus does not receive funds from the national headquarters, nor is Willis paid for her time or service. She, too, is a dedicated volunteer. For Willis, Project Linus isn’t about her. “It’s about the whole community that unites to serve others, and while serving, we learn new things, often times teaching

he Michelin Soccer Program and Oildale Tire donated more than $656 in funds and equipment to Kern County Soccer Park Foundation. These funds go a long way in helping to provide scholarships, uniforms and other soccer essentials for the participating leagues. Giving back to the community is a top priority for Michelin. The Michelin Soccer Program partners tire dealers with local youth soccer organizations, providing the dealers the opportunity to reach out to the community. The leagues in turn receive funds and equipment. The soccer leagues are sent certificates that can be redeemed at the dealer’s stores for a free soccer ball during

a 30-day promotional period, while supplies last. After a 60-day tire rebate promotion included on the certificate, Michelin donates $2 to the soccer organization for each tire sold during the program. Duane Collins of Oildale Tire in Bakersfield is an avid supporter of the program. “The Michelin Soccer Program is an incredible way to connect with families and young players,” he said. “The look on the children’s face as you hand them their soccer ball is priceless. I encourage all the Michelin dealers to find a local soccer league and support them through this program.” To learn more about the Michelin Soccer Program, visit www.michelinsoccer.com/?league_ overview.
