Girl Scout Troop earns bronze badge with pet food drive BY MICHELE WILLIS Community contributor
R
ecently, the Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry picked up 832 pounds of pet food from Girl Scouts Troop #3407. The girls earned their Bronze Award which is the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can earn. The Bronze award shows they have made a promise to help others, improve our community and world, and become the best they can be! We are extremely grateful and proud that they picked the pantry as their service project to earn the Bronze award! The girls sat out in front of PetCo for two weekends and held their pet food drive. Good job! All of us here at the Pet Food Pantry would like to thank and acknowledge the many schools and clubs who have participated in holding pet food drives the past few months! We also wish to thank their teachers
and leaders for inspiring them! Among the schools that patriciated is Freedom Middle School's Roots and Shoots Club with over 400 pounds of pet food collected. Stockdale High's Interact Club collected 529 pounds; San Lauren Elementary collected 105 pounds, Little Christian School collected 128 pounds and St. Francis School collected 196 pounds. To all of you who have donated pet food to the pantry you can feel proud that you are helping people in our community who are struggling financially with pet food for their pets! If you missed this pet food bagging event, mark your calendar for Sunday, March 4 — that’s the date for our next event. The bagging event will be in front of the Self Serve Pet Spa, 2816 Calloway Dr. #103. In the meantime, thank you for helping so many families and seniors in need around Kern County — and for all the bellies you helped to keep full this month.

Dig deep when planting early tomatoes
N
ow’s the time to get started on planting your “veggie” garden. While it’s still too cold to plant some vegetables or herbs, you can get started with planting tomatoes as long as you plant them deep in the ground. Plant tomatoes in a 8-12 inch hole with a “hot cap” or cover over them to help keep the frost off at night. At Robby’s Nursery, we have a large selection vegetable plants and seeds to get you started. Happy gardening! This week’s gardening tip is from Kathy Robinson of Robby’s Nursery. Do YOU have a gardening tip you’d like to share with our readers? Post your gardening tips and photos of your garden on our web site at: www.bakersfieldvoice.com.

IX YOUR PIT, a program offering a lowcost spay/neuter option for pit bulls and pit bull mixes in Kern County, would like to thank The Bakersfield Californian Foundation for the approval of its grant. The grant will allow FIX YOUR PIT to spay or neuter an additional 90 pit bulls, thus preventing a minimum of 900 pit bulls from being added to the over-population of unwanted dogs. Support from organizations like The Bakersfield Californian Foundation provide much-needed funds to address the particular need for pit bull spay/neuter, as this breed is among the most frequently turned into Kern County shelters — and one of the least adopted. The FIX YOUR PIT program is deeply grateful to The Bakersfield Californian Foundation for their generosity. For more information about this program go to: www.FixYourPitBull.org.

National Pancake Day to benefit Bakersfield Memorial’s Children’s Miracle Network BY HANNAH MUNOZ Community contributor
F
or the seventh consecutive year, IHOP restaurants nationwide will offer each guest a free short stack of its famous buttermilk pancakes on National Pancake Day Tuesday, February 28, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., in an effort to raise awareness and funds for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. For every short stack of buttermilk pancakes served on National Pancake Day, IHOP guests are invited to make a voluntary donation to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Donations made at IHOPs in the Bakersfield area will benefit the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ program at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital. IHOP hopes to raise $2.7 million this year, with a goal to bring the total amount of funds raised to more than $10 million. To find a local IHOP or to donate online, visit www.ihoppancakeday.com. National Pancake Day Fun Facts: • IHOP served four million free pancakes on
National Pancake Day 2011 and pancake lovers donated more than $2.5 million to children’s charities, exceeding the fundraising goal of $2.3 million. • All of the free pancakes served on National Pancake Day 2011 would create a stack nearly 16 miles high. • Since the inception of National Pancake Day in 2006, IHOP has raised nearly $8 million and given away more than 14 million pancakes to support charities in the communities in which it operates. • National Pancake Day 2011 was IHOP’s largest one-day event in the company’s 53-year history. • Pancake Day is a tradition that dates back several centuries to when the English prepped for fasting during Lent. Strict rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up the supply of eggs, milk, butter and other dairy products … hence the name Pancake Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday. In 2012, IHOP’s National Pancake Day will be celebrated a week later, as the popular annual campaign has evolved into a monthlong celebration that takes place during the month of February.
