he National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society in partnership with Kern Medical Center (KMC) and UCLA will officially launch a telemedicine program to bring access to MS specialty care for the uninsured and underinsured in Kern County. The final test on equipment was completed Thursday, Jan. 30, and the first MS patient has been scheduled for a consultation with Dr. Barbara Giesser, Clinical Director of UCLA MS Clinical Services. Staff and volunteers at the Southern California & Nevada Chapter had been exploring ways to deliver MS specialty care to rural and remote areas through telemedicine. “Dr. Giesser expressed an interest in helping people with MS in Kern County,” explained Audra Hindes, who serves as the Chapter’s Senior Director for Clinical Programs, Services, and Advocacy. “And after that, we discovered KMC was already wired for telemedicine. We put two and two together to organize a meeting

hen we first started DreamCatchers club at Frontier High School to grant dreams to hospice patients, we didn’t realize just how much the experiences we gained would enrich our lives. Frontier DreamCatchers is a non-profit, student-led high school club that works with Optimal Hospice Care to grant dreams to terminally ill patients. DreamCatchers was established by Caitlin Crommett in Orange County five years ago when Crommett was a high school sophomore. In 2012, DreamCatchers was brought to Bakersfield by the Busacca triplets of Liberty High and my sister, Sarah, and I, started it at Frontier High last year. DreamCatchers has now spread to three more area high schools. I thought starting the club would allow me to practice my leadership skills while doing something I love — helping others. I never realized what an impact each client would have on the club members and myself — and what a difference we would be making in each patient’s life. Most recently, a man named Stephen was in need of eye glasses. He had broken his months earlier and had no way to pay for or obtain new ones. As part of Stephen’s Santa Dream, DreamCatchers decided to get him his

to discuss further steps.” MS Clinic Days will be scheduled when local neurologists have a patient who needs a second opinion on an MS diagnosis or new treatment management plans. Medical histories will be forwarded in advance of the consultations, which will be conducted by Dr. Geisser. Both UCLA and KMC will use telemedicine equipment consisting of video conferencing units that enable real time, high quality face-to-face visits. The consults will offer input on diagnosis and/or treatment, and will develop a care plan to manage the course of each person’s disease. “We are hoping to have 25 to 30 people seen through this project in the first year, and are hoping that people who have this opportunity will be able to confirm their MS diagnosis, better understand their symptoms and need for treatment and other treatment options,” said Hindes. “We think this service will also enhance the education and access for the health care professionals in Kern County who are managing the complexities of multiple sclerosis care.”

His face would light up as he told us over and over again that he was getting two pairs of new glasses!

As an urgent care veterinarian, I see the negative consequences of this all of the time. In reality, you can get away with feeding pets table scraps most of the time. The problem is that when there are complications, they are often serious and can be potentially life-threatening. Problems can range from a simple gastrointestinal upset, to pancreatitis, to obstructions of the gastrointestinal tract, all of which would require surgery. I see lots of these particular cases at Thanksgiving and during the holiday season when pets are fed lots of fatty tidbits that can cause these problems. Feeding bones to your pet is also common, but you are taking a serious risk that may result in a major surgery

to remove a bone. My best advice is to avoid any potential problem and not feed your pet from the table at all. If you want to give your pet a treat, then buy a commercial product that is made as a treat. If you’re looking for a healthier choice, there are vegetable-based snacks for your pet. One other word of caution: Do not overindulge with treats. You could end up causing your pet to become obese, which comes with lots of other potential medical complications.
