G
iving the gift of life by donating his blood is one selfless act that Grady Buck has been doing for nearly 30 years. Buck, executive vice president and chief credit officer of Valley Republic Bank, started donating back in 1982, when his boss’ wife was sick and needed blood transfusions. “Another co-worker and I gave blood and then decided to team up and give blood on a continual basis. I have been doing it ever since, even though my buddy left town years ago,” Buck said. This universal Type O-negative blood donor is currently part of the 19-Gallon Club at Houchin Community Blood Bank. Buck said he would be well over 20 gallons by now had he not moved out of town for a few years. “Donating blood to save lives makes me feel absolutely wonderful ... like I have given something back to mankind and have some purpose other than doing something for just me,” Buck said. He also admits to having a low pain threshold, but said the nurses at Houchin are so good at what they do, that you hardly feel anything. This is part of the reason why people are hesitant to donate in the first place, because they are either afraid of needles or think giving blood is going to hurt. “I think it’s extremely important for more people in this community to become consistent blood donors, meaning they can donate every eight weeks. That’s why someone like Grady Buck is so valuable to the blood bank,” said Greg Gallion, president and CEO of Houchin Community

Blood Bank. According to Gallion, the blood bank generates about 37,000 units of red blood cells per year and approximately 7,000 units of platelets. There are medical emergencies every day where someone’s life is in need of blood, whether that’s at a local hospital, private cancer and blood disease treatment facility, dialysis center or home health agency. In fact, one out of 10 people who enter a hospital need a blood transfusion. Buck encourages others to take one hour out of their busy schedules every couple of months to help save lives. Hospital CEO to join Adventist’s new market development team

Beehler, president and CEO of San Joaquin Community Hospital, will be joining Adventist Health’s new market development team, focusing on hospital mergers and acquisitions. This is a strategically important area for Adventist Health as it implements a significant plan for growth throughout the next few years. Current Beehler San Joaquin board chairman Scott Reiner will become interim president and CEO. Under Beehler’s leadership, San Joaquin hospital has realized substantial growth during the past 10 years. He championed the new AIS Cancer Center, and announced plans for a second location for Quest Imaging, a three-story, 60,000-square-foot imag-

ing and diagnostic facility adjacent to the new cancer center. Additionally, Beehler was responsible for building a new hospital tower, which opened in 2007. As San Joaquin hospital continues to meet the needs of the Bakersfield community, “we are very thankful to Bob’s leadership for the past decade at SJCH,” said Reiner. “His vision for the hospital to meet community needs has been evident by the vast amount of growth in service lines and programs. We look forward to putting his skills and talents to work at the corporate level.” A nurse by training, Reiner is the executive vice president and COO for Adventist Health, a position he will retain while providing leadership for San Joaquin. Reiner, who has a strong clinical background, serves as the chair of the System Quality Council, and will enhance San Joaquin’s focus on clinical quality and effectiveness. ast year, the Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault received 144 requests for hospital accompaniments related to rape or assault. This year, the agency saw a significant increase to 178 requests for hospital accompaniments. Other services have also seen an increase in requests, including counseling, case management. The alliance has seen increased pressure on the services it offers in all areas but one, hotline calls. Taniel Green-Wood, clinical services manager at the alliance’s outreach center, said she believes this is the most significant statistic of all. “We all know that rape is one of the most under reported crimes,” she said. “This disparity between the recent Bakersfield Police Department crime report for rape, and the number of calls received in the last 12 months to our hotline, shows that many who experience assault or rape may be afraid or unsure where to go for help.”

The alliance’s mission is to stop domestic violence and sexual assault in Kern County, and assist survivors in reclaiming their lives. Our diverse programs provide protection, prevention, education, advocacy and transitional services for thousands of Kern County women, children and men each year. Services include 24-hour hotline crisis intervention; office walk-in crisis intervention Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; domestic abuse response team and sexual assault response team; case management and referral assistance; domestic violence emergency shelter and transitional services; individual counseling for adults and children; domestic violence and sexual assault counseling and awareness groups; domestic violence and sexual assault education and prevention; and hospital, court accompaniment and advocacy.
