Community connections, MS Society events help in fight BY CHRISTINE GRONTKOWSKI Community contributor

M

ultiple Sclerosis Awareness Week is March 11 to 17, and people around the world, including locally, are celebrating by creating connections that are stronger than those that MS destroys. “MS kills connections, and connections kill MS,” said Christine Grontkowski, community development manager for the National MS Society’s Kern County office. “Our hope is that more connections will be formed, leading to more resources for those affected by MS, more understanding, and more answers.” Here are a few ways to be involved: • Today: Buy a slice of carrot cake today at Frugatti’s Italian Eatery and 25 percent of the sale will be donated to the National MS Society. • Thursday, March 21: “BAMS — Team Hope,” with Frugatti’s and

Imbibe Wine and Spirits Merchant, are holding the fourth annual “Taste of Hope” fundraiser. A $40 ticket includes admission, light Italian fare, live music and a wine card. More information: 321-9512, ext. 66401. • Saturday, March 23: “Don’t MS With US” is holding a poker fundraiser at Aviator Casino in Delano. A $60 ticket includes a dinner buffet. More information: Darren Kerns at 3247500, or 303-2956. Also on March 23 is “Every Connection Counts.” Share your story and connect with others at MSconnection.org. Learn more about MS, upload your own photo and connection to share with others, download tools to spread MS awareness, or register to participate in Walk MS, Bike MS or another event near you. Volunteers “painted” downtown Bakersfield orange on March 9 by tying orange ribbons around trees along Chester and Truxtun avenues. Frontier High students, pictured here, helped tie ribbons around trees during a previous MS Awareness Week. You can also get involved by wearing orange or bringing orange treats to work or school. he Bakersfield Homeless Center is preparing for its annual Easter Eggstravaganza, held from 10 a.m. to noon March 23 at 1600 E. Truxtun Ave. Activities like these provide a sense of holiday tradition and stability for children who receive center services. “Our special Easter dinner and Easter party are designed to ... replicate the Easter fun that would normally take place in a child’s own home,” said Louis Gill, the center’s CEO. In addition, the center is asking the community to help provide donations

of Easter goodies. “Things like Easter eggs, jelly beans, sweets and baskets are necessary to create the overall experience for our children,” said Carolann Wooton, the center’s external affairs manager. “We also need community groups to volunteer to provide carnival booths.” Donations for the Eggstravaganza are needed by March 20. Also, anyone interested in volunteering should contact Jerri Alvarado at 322-9199 ext. 110, for more information. Donations are also needed to help provide Easter dinner items such as CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
