Students express world views, thoughts about life with poetry

P

eople who are appreciative just seem to be a pleasure to be around. That’s why it’s always a highlight when students write odes. They find a unique way of looking at their world and also appreciate a variety of things, people, and activities in their everyday lives. I’ve also thrown in a parody because Zachary Urrabazo, one of my eighth-grade students, is so clever, and I did, after all, go to college with Weird Al Yankovic, king of parodies! Ode to running by Anthony Moronez I can’t live without it if I tried, If you ever left me I think I would cry. We have been through a lot, Some extremely good some not. You aren’t just a sport or game, You are more to me than money or fame. I’ve been happy of our relationship, You have been good to me every bit. I’m trying to say you’re my life, When I grow up I might love you more than my wife. Because you are here for me 24/7, And when I die I will take you with me to heaven. Ode to my shoes by Gabriel Torres My shoes are so comfortable They make me look irresistible When I’m walking down the street People can’t keep their eyes off my feet My shoes make me look so good I run so fast in my shoes people think I’m running from the hood. With my shoes I can run all the way to Haiti With my shoes I attract all the pretty ladies. When I wear my shoes I look so fly When I wear my shoes I’m that sexy guy I just thank my shoes for making me look so attractive Without my shoes I would be nothing, not even active. Ode to my best friend by Jennifer Lule My best friend, Kailey, is always by my

side, We are always together, like Bonny and Clyde. She and I are so different, yet we are so alike, We love each other very much, like my brother loves his bike. I know we’ll always stick together through thick and thin, Because when I am with Kailey, I get a big old grin. Now we have had our good times, but also our bad, But I am always with her, whether she’s happy or sad. I have now left her side and I miss her dearly, For we are very close, as you can see clearly. I know I’ll see her Education columnist soon because of course, she is my best friend, And love can stretch over any boundary, so we will be friends til the end.

PEGGY DEWANEPOPE

Ode to my bike by Javier Sandoval My bike is not the best, But it can still beat the rest. It has a few problems here and there, But I can take me anywhere. I’ve been to Walgreens with it and done jumps, Although I could feel all the bumps. It was a present to me, Even though I was a little tiny. I ride with all my friends, Even though they ask me for some money to lend. Some of us whine, When we have to go inside for dinner time. Ode to my Dad by Sonam Sidhu My dad is all smiles,

Good; without problem is how I would play. But you were still in my mind by the end of the day, The night of the concert was the best day yet. Your music, so beautiful I’ll never forget. But it has ended. No more concerts, no more practices. Oh how I miss those afternoons at Actis.

Though he’s tired all the while. He’ll make me delicious food, Even if he’s in a bad mood. We watched the Super Bowl together, And with each point, I felt like a feather. Even though we lost (how lame?), He still said, “Good game.” My dad looks old when he doesn’t shave his beard, Plus just a little weird. At times, he’s a tad bit crazy, But never, ever lazy. Ode to Anime by Nicole Matthias Anime is a different world to me, It’s the only safe place I can be. Even though everyone wants me to turn it down a notch, It’s the only thing I want to watch. It’s the perfect fantasy world, Where one’s hair is always perfectly curled.

Bakersfield Southwest Baseball celebrates opening day COURTESY OF WWW.MYBAKERSFIELDSPORTS.COM lthough the first day of spring is still a weeks away, perfect weather conditions brought out more than 5,000 people to Aera Park for Bakersfield Southwest Baseball’s annual opening day ceremony recently. More than 1,200 youngsters representing more than 138 teams ranging in age from 3-18 took part in the morning ceremony, as fans packed the stands and grassy areas at the park. The event marked the 24th opening day for the organization, whose numbers are growing more than 30 percent a year. “Opening day all started off just to have fun, but the event has grown into a fundraiser for us as well,” said fourth-year BSWB president Darren Billesbach. “When you see all the kids come out onto the field with smiles, that’s what makes it all worthwhile.” After the teams were introduced, Kern County Supervisor Mike Maggard addressed the crowd. “I remember opening day when I was a kid,” said Maggard. “It was a time when everyone was still in contention, somebody was going to hit the first home run, butterflies in your stomach, and all the best stuff about baseball. Also in attendance was Bakersfield native David Carr of the 2011 Super Bowl champion New York Giants, who played BSWB and now has two sons in the league. “I’ve been involved in this for close to 30 years

A sea of Bakersfield Southwest Baseball league players and coaches gathered at Aera Park on a recent Saturday morning for the league’s opening ceremonies. and it’s an awesome deal,” said Carr. “I’ve been all over the country and have seen lots of Little League fields, and we should feel blessed to have a facility like this in our city.” However, there is always room to improve the fields, which are at maximum capacity, and one of the main goals for this season is to find a sponsor to purchase lights that would accommodate night practices and games so the more than 600 youths on the waiting list would get a chance to play. “We are a non-profit, and without our sponsors we would be another second- tiered park,” said VP of fundraising Brent Clayton. “The support we get makes BSWB ‘Best in Class’ in California ball parks.”
