It takes a village of parents, community leaders to raise a child BY MICHAEL SPICKLER Community contributor

I

spent a recent Saturday morning at Norris Middle School listening to some of our area’s finest speakers compete in the 41st annual Kern County Oral Language Festival. I saw principals and teachers on their “day off supporting some of their students that had earned the chance to present that morning. As I went from room to room enjoying the students’ hard work I began to think about the efforts behind this one day in the life of these students. Hundreds of students were presenting or performing their pieces that day. These were the best of the best from the many regional festivals earlier this year. I began to mull the hours of preparation and coaching that must have been involved for these students to perform at this level. In each category there were 10 to 14 regional winners competing. At the awards ceremony I noticed only the top three places were recognized. I talked

than that, their employees give time to our schools The next morning at church I talked to some of the teachers I worship with. We talked about how blessed we are to live in a community that so generously gives to its private schools — St. Johns, Heritage Academy, Stockdale Christian, and Garces. Thanks to the teachers, administrators, companies, churches and all the volunteers that help teach our children every day. The old African proverb says: “It takes a village to raise a child. I am sure glad I live in this village. Michael Spickler serves on the board of trustees for the Rosedale Union School District.

with parents about their children and the hard work it took to reach this day and kept hearing of the teachers that coached the students. I can’t begin to imagine the days spent at lunch and after school tweaking these speeches into the words we heard that morning. That evening I began to think about the different things my children have been taught after school and in so many clubs through the years. Boy Scouts, band, choir, BASA, NOR, Awanas, cheer, AYSO — and the list goes on and on. I thought about the many volunteers that have been involved in my children’s lives. Many of them were teachers addressing far more than just the state standards. Athletic boosters, band boosters, FFA, Boy Scouts, are all guided by volunteers and teachers in their spare time. We also talked about the companies that support our schools: Chevron, Grimmway, Bank of America, Aera, Paramount, and Wells Fargo — another list that goes on and on. These companies give financial help, but more
