lease come on over to Bakersfield Fraternal Order of Eagles, 1718 17th St., Tuesday, April 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. for some great tacos and help us to raise funds for abused kids. The Jammin Island Hula group will be selling tacos for $1, a combo plate of two tacos, rice & beans for $6, or a taco salad for $6 as part of
the April 10 fundraiser. Dessert will be $2 for a pie, cake, or cookie plate. Aside from the food, people will be able to enjoy entertainment provided by Jammin Island Hula and Roamin Reptiles. The show begins at 5:15 p.m. (and people will love these families that have donated their hula to help others.) The group recently performed for seniors for Valentine's Day and stole hearts! This class also made heart leis for all our grandmoth-
ers and grandfathers in attendance. After the hula presentation, families will also enjoy some dear friends, the Roaming Reptiles, who will be showcasing some interesting creatures as they educate attendees about some of fellow earthly neighbors. The whole family is sure to have a great time! Together we will have some good food, great fun, and be the difference in the life of a child. Mahalo Nui!

Highland High School graduate, Jessica Smith, rows for Sacramento State’s varsity eight and varsity four teams. Along with the Hornets, the Sacramento State Invitational included crews from Humboldt State, Saint Mary's, Cal Lightweights, Santa Clara, Pacific, Sonoma State, UC San Diego and Mills College. The Hornets competed in seven races during the day, and four of the five first-place boats won their races by open water. Of the two entries that didn’t place first, each of those boats finished among the top three, including the novice four (second place)
and cox4 (third place). Each of the high finishes came despite a number of Sacramento State rowers doubling up and competing in two different races. In addition, the team's top boat (varsity eight) competed with four underclassmen, comprised of sophomores Antonia Dendrinos and Jessica Smith(Highland High), and freshmen Nneka Anyanwu, and Michelle Evers. In the varsity eight competition, Sacramento State finished with a 2,000-meter winning time of 6:55.4, followed by Saint Mary's (6:57.6) and Humboldt State (7:03.9) to round out the top three in the fiveboat field. The varsity four posted a winning time of 7:43.5, followed by Humboldt State A (7:52.2) and Saint Mary's (8:08.1) to round out the top three in a sevenboat field. In the second varsity four race, the Hornets were 5.8 seconds faster than the next closest boat.

t’s time to start increasing your watering times. Make sure you give your yard a good soak — then wait for it to dry out and do it again. You should also start feeding once a month. “Grow Power Plus” is a good balanced fertilizer that has a penetrant in it for a deeper watering.
Remember to water your fertilizer in immediately after you apply it. This week’s gardening tip is from Kathy Robinson of Robby’s Nursery.
