Prevent exercise injuries with these warm up tips
I
t is important to warm up — yes, even in hot Bakersfield — before each workout to ensure that the muscles and surrounding tissue receive enough blood and nutrients to perform any required tasks during actual exercises. Skipping the warm up can sometimes result in painful tears that take time and rest to heal. Try 10 minutes of a dynamic warm up. What exactly is a dynamic warmup? It involves moving parts of your body and gradually increasing reach, speed of movement, or both. Do not confuse dynamic stretching with ballistic (bouncing movements) stretching. Dynamic stretching consists of controlled leg and arm swings that take you gently to the limits of your range of motion. Ballistic stretching forces your body past its safe range of motion. In dynamic stretches, there are no bounces or jerking movements. An example of dynamic stretching would be slow, controlled leg swings, arm swings, or torso twists.

And one more thing: please stay hydrated before, during and after your workout. Even the warm up moves work best when the body is hydrated. Think of driving your car with an empty tank of gas. Wells Fargo gives $30K to programs for ‘voiceless’ BY CAROLANN WOOTON Community contributor

he Bakersfield Homeless Center and Alliance Against Family Violence and Sexual Assault have announced a grant award from Wells Fargo Bank of $30,000 to provide program support. “Wells Fargo has been a longtime supporter of the homeless center and the alliance, and we are grateful for the partnerships such as these,” said Carolann Wooton, external affairs manager at the center. “Gifts such as
those received from Wells Fargo allow us to continue to be a voice for the voiceless.” Wells Fargo’s Senior Vice President Ernie Pineda and Vice President of Business Banking Crystal Aldritt presented Louis Gill, Bakersfield Homeless Center CEO, with a donation of $15,000 for the center and $15,000 for the alliance. The check was presented at the monthly board of director’s meeting on March 5.

Marching to the beat of his own drum line Centennial High student finds ‘reason’ in music, drumming
D
rum line has forever changed me as a musician, and as a human being. For the last three years, drum line at Centennial High School has been a large part of my life. Throughout marching season and indoor season, the responsibility and leadership skills of each member of every ensemble are put to the test. Without drum line, I would not be the person I am today. Drum line is an artistic outlet that allows me to

express myself through music and the marching arts. In addition, it acts as a stress reliever. It has introduced me to wonderful people that have taught me lessons I will never forget — and that shape me now as a person. Responsibility is thrust upon every individual in the ensemble. Even if one person is not there, or does not know their music or drill, the whole group falls. The time taken out of everybody’s schedule pays off when you are performing in front of the crowd —
feeling the intensity and ferocity of your own performance. It pays off to perform and do what you love. Hours of practice each week pays off at the end of the season during finals when every competitor is standing on the Allen Gallego gym floor waiting for their school’s name to be announced. It also pays off when the
group walks up to the front to receive their medals, while everyone in the audience cheers and congratulates you on how amazing you did. Drum line gives me that ecstatic feeling of joy that nothing else could supply. It has prepared me for the future, and taught me lessons that I apply to everyday life. Overall, for me, drum line is that one thing that gives me reason. Drum line is what I do — and I do what I love. Allen Gallego is a junior and passionate musician at Centennial High School in northwest Bakersfield.
