Armed with a good bug bait, you, too, can declare WAR on garden pests
Blessing the community, one yard at a time! BY SONFLOWERANDGRACE Bakersfield Voice Contributor
R
ain is a good thing — but with all the rainfall this year, pests are a big problem! Yesterday morning, I was walking around my yard just looking. I noticed an unusual amount of chewing had been going on. I know snails are a big problem this time of year but, on closer inspection, I noticed the harder to see slugs out in record numbers. This means WAR! The slugs I saw were mainly a greyish color and not too large. They are much harder to see but their slim trail is easy to spot. I also found some big fat long slugs, but not very many. If you don't have pets, Cory’s Bug Gardening columnist Bait is the best I’ve found. The Bug Bait has two kinds of insecticide so it has a broader range of kill. It also gets sow bugs and earwigs — both can be huge problems and harbor in the same areas as snails and slugs.
KATHY ROBINSON
Remember, though, to mix up your baits — don’t always use the same thing and you’ll get better controls. I feel like a hunter tracking down the “big game” that are after my plants! Here is what I did in the early a.m.: First, I went through the yard and used the pet safe Sluggo. I have one dog that will eat first and ask questions later — can’t put anything out in the open! Sluggo takes about a week to work. I can’t stand to leave it to chance so, next, I got a bottle of ready-to-use Slug and Snail Away by Gro Power. It’s made of cinnamon oil. Armed with this, I went back out there and went hunting! One squirt on each critter I saw (slug or snail) and it was history. They begin to foam and fall off my plants — yeah, instant gratification! My next line of defense — I took some heavy boards that my dog can’t move, laid them on the ground up near heavily foliaged areas — in some places I slide them under big shrubs. I then baited with my favorite (Cory’s Bug Bait) that is not pet safe. It has an attractant in it so the slugs and snails are drawn to it; plus, they love to harbor under the boards. I told you, it was WAR!
T
here are no words to express how fulfilling and humbling it has been this past year as our home as been headquarters for Monday’s Angels, who meet at least every Monday morning to do whatever needs to be done in the neighborhood. These “brothers from another mother” are gentlemen on the upside of a downward spiral from addiction but have made their first step towards recovery. Listening to neighbors’ comments and watching the transformations, I ponder how similar these yards are to the lives of those who are working so hard to clean them up. The piles of refuse and unwanted items symbolize all that God has to sift through in our hearts. Welcoming us with open arms, Jesus begins sorting through all our personal garbage ... recycling
Upcoming seminars at Robby’s Saturday, April 17, 10 a.m. “Moss Baskets and Container Gardening” Dos and don’ts of planting in pots by Kathy May 15 & 16 Bonsai Class by Robby Sign up in advance for this two-day class by calling 588-0859 There is a $75 materials fee With this triple line of defense, I hope to take back my yard. I will get another bottle of the oil (I used one the first day) and scout out my yard each morning for “escapeeees”! It is a jungle out there and I’m on the hunt — those little critters won’t get all my spring flowers. Oh, by the way, all these products are available at our nursery — Robby’s, 13129 Hageman Road. On with the WAR!
and repurposing. Using what we have been through for His purpose, He casts off all of which we repent. Gathering on our front lawn for prayer before this group of wayward gentlemen makes its way throughout the community, we see God working in amazing ways! The community is cleaned and refreshed. The guys are held up and encouraged as they relearn healthy work habits and earn funds to help pay for housing and necessities in the program. Within each heart a miracle emerges and hope is restored as faith is renewed ... one yard at a time! For more information about Monday’s Angels contact Karen at 337-8916. CSUB business students, Amber Newsom, Adrian Nevarez and April Perreira, placed fifth in the Regional HRGames recently held in Reno, Nev.
The competition is based on a “Jeopardy” style format covering areas such as employment law, recruiting, staffing, compensation, benefits, unions, etc. When asked about the competition, Professor Decker, advisor and coach, stated: “I am very proud of
our team. The students worked hard to prepare for the competition. To place fifth in their first Regional HRGames competition is a great accomplishment.” For more information about HRGames, contact Diane Decker at 654-2619.
