The cure for spring fever? Plant, plant, plant! already up, it is still good to put down pre emergents. The seed control will still stop any more from germinating. Then jot a note on the calendar to apply in early spring next year — March 1 would be good. Don’t forget to get on schedule for the rest of the year as well. June 1, Sept. 1 and Dec. 1 is a good schedule to try and stick to.

E

veryday I get calls asking “Is it too late to plant seed,” “Is it too late prune,” “Is it too late to plant” or “Is it too late to put down pre emergent?” My answer is almost always, “It’s never too late to do the ‘right thing’ when it comes to gardening or anything else for that matter.” Don’t be afraid to go ahead, even if you are a little late. I’ve always found gardening is a very forgiving hobby. We can have great success in spite of ourselves. Wildflower seeds, for instance, can be sowed any time after the ground has warmed up. It may be late if you’re depending only on spring rains for germination, but if you water them you’ll see those flowers responding very quickly. With a little mulch and fertilizer, they will thrive in spite of a late start. As for the question of “Can I still prune my fruit trees and roses?” my answer is Gardening columnist “Most definitely.”

KATHY ROBINSON

Planting annual flowers can quickly brighten up a garden, and it’s not too late!

Plants can be shaped and pruned throughout the growing season. It is many times necessary to do multiple pruning to keep plants in bounds that we have established for them. An overgrown yard is usually not the most attractive, so prune as needed, not just once a year. In Bakersfield, we are blessed with weather that enables us to plant all year. It’s never too late to plant. Of course, when you plant in the summer, remember to “hand water” everyday. Don’t depend on your sprinklers in the heat to take care of newly planted items. You must soak that root ball every morning until your plants get rooted into the surrounding soil. That will take a good month or more! And yes, even if the weeds are

PAWPRINTCITY

For a better life ... Community bands together at Red Brick Pizza Café to aid shelter pups

W

hen the Friends of the Kern County Animal Shelters Foundation held a fundraiser for a new water heater for the county animal shelter, the public came through. It turns out that Kern County Animal Control only has a 12-gallon water heater — far, far too small to handle even a little bit of dog bathing. Volunteer groomers go to the shelter, donating their time and talent to bathe and groom homeless dogs in an effort to make them more adoptable, but were frustrated that these pups couldn’t even get a warm bath. As word reached Friends of KCASF, they decided to hold a fundraiser and see if maybe, just maybe, they could raise enough money to replace the all but worthless heater with a new, tankless version.

On March 24, Red Brick Pizza Café on Brimhall Road was kind enough to donate 20 percent of all purchases between 4 and 9 p.m. to the cause. Friends of KCASF also provided two great raffle items: a goodie-laden dog house and cat gift basket; and brought Tshirts for sale to support the cause. The result? People were waiting in lines that reached out the door for most of the event, happy to support the Pet columnist Friends in

VICKY THRASHER

their effort. Folks from several animal groups including Alpha Canine, The Cat People and Kern Humane Society showed up, as well as animal lovers and shelter supporters of all shapes and sizes. There were so many people that the owners of Red Brick apologized to the crowd for what was, at times, a nearly two-hour wait. But wait they did, with customers waving off apologies, happy to be a part of such a good cause. In the end, between Red Brick’s contribution, raffle ticket and T-shirt sales, and cash donations from people who didn’t wish to wait in line but still wanted to help, the Friends of KCASF raised nearly $2,000 in donations — more than enough to cover the cost of the water heater and its installation, with a little money left over for other projects benefiting the animals at Kern County Ani-

mal Control. Special thanks for this event go to Red Brick Pizza Café owners, Robert and Patty Salazar; Suzanne Guest; and Friends of the Shelter member, Linda Watson. All were instrumental for getting this event off of the ground. Thank you for your time and effort on behalf of homeless pets. And thank you, community members, who took time away from your day-today activities to stand in line, buy raffle tickets and T-shirts, and have a little pizza for the benefit of shelter animals. The result of your efforts will linger far beyond that evening, making life a little better for pups looking for a chance to find their forever home. Have a pet-related question or comment? Living Strong in fundraiser BY ESTEBAN SOLANO Community contributor

E

steban Solano joins the Lance Armstrong Foundation’s (LAF) fight against cancer by participating in the 2008 LIVESTRONG® Challenge in San Jose. The LIVESTRONG Challenge allows teams and individuals to pick a fight with cancer by fundraising to support the LAF and the nearly 12 million Americans living with cancer. “My father, Pedro, recently passed away from lung cancer. My wife, Barbara, also lost her father, Don, and her Aunt Shiela, to cancer just a couple of years ago. Last month, my 8-year-old son, Kyle, watched his friend, Conner and his 4-year-old sister, Millie, lose their mother, Stephanie, to cancer. Currently, my Aunt Cira is fighting for her life against this horrible disease,” Solano said. The LIVESTRONG Challenge is the Lance Armstrong Foundation’s signature fundraising event, taking place in

cities across the country to unite people to fight cancer. In 2009, the LIVESTRONG Challenge will take place in San Jose, July 13. Solano hopes to raise $3,000 for the LAF as a participant of the LIVESTRONG Solano Challenge San Jose by participating in the 100-mile bike ride. Solano has been riding in and around Kern County for the past six years. He is a member of the local SSFTA Mountain Bike Club and occasionally rides with the Kern Wheelmen. His love for bikes has given him the ability to participate in this event. His love for his family and friends, who have been touched and taken by cancer, has given him the strength and encouragement to participate in this grueling ride.
