San Joaquin Community Hospital hosts reunion for ‘All-Star’ babies

at SJCH. This year’s theme was superherorelated because the families, the babies and their caregivers are all super and heroic! The celebration honored the All-Star babies born at SJCH’s NICU and the superheroes made up of those babies’ families and caregivers, who have experienced the great benefits of having an intensive care facility for infants here at SJCH. The growth in Kern County’s population has increased the need for intensive care facilities for infants. The addition of SJCH’s nine NICU beds is a huge benefit to our community and the heartwarming NICU stories deserve a celebration.

On April 6, San Joaquin Community Hospital hosted a reunion of families and caregivers of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. It has been five years since San Joaquin Community Hospital (SJCH) became a comprehensive center for newborn care, when it opened its ninebed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) within the hospital’s awardwinning Maternity Care Center. A NICU is an intensive care unit that is specifically designed to meet the unique needs of ill or premature infants. This marks the fifth reunion of NICU babies and their caregivers to celebrate the accomplishments of these families and the caregivers here

Chevron donates $50K to help foster children COURTESY OF CASA ourt Appointed Special Advocates of Kern County announces the generous donation of $50,000 from Chevron. The funds will be used to recruit, screen, train and supervise new advocates to speak on behalf of the abused and abandoned children in the foster care system. CASA volunteers are appointed by the juvenile court judge to assess the current circumstances of the child, report these findings, and speak on the child’s behalf in court. CASA volunteers spend an average of 10 to 15 hours per month on each case and meet with their appointed child weekly. The program endures costs to recruit, screen, train and supervise each CASA Advocate. These funds will help train 20 to 25 more highly trained volunteers. A CASA volunteer is someone that will meet with the child weekly and

take the time to get to know them. This influence in a child’s life can positively change their future and enhance their likelihood of finding a forever family. The Academy maintains a high staffto-student ratio that enables staff to maintain a consistent level of encouragement and support to the enrolled students. In addition to probation and school staff, on-site mental health and substance abuse services are provided. Bridges Academy, created in 2008, has successfully helped many at-risk youth achieve their dream of earning a
charitable arm of Darden Restaurants. Now in its third year, the program empowers each restaurant in the Darden family of brands to help award a $1,000 grant to support local community programs. Nonprofits receiving grants support one of Darden’s three key focus areas: education, preservation of natural resources and hunger relief.
