ike all mothers, my mom is goofy when she tries to be current with the style or music, and she is always there for me. My family is very involved with swimming and when I am at a swim meet, instead of sitting in a chair reading a magazine or talking on her cell phone with a girlfriend, she stands up in the blazing sun and helps with every meet that is possible. She has led my sister and I in the right direction and has helped with any problems we have. I love my mom and I know that she loves me — not because she tells me she does, but because of what she does to show her love for me. My mom is my rock and I couldn’t be the person I am today without her. She is a beautiful person and I want to grow up to be just like her.

Four generations gather for Easter celebration

The Easter Bunny ran amuck in our backyard in northwest Bakersfield, so we called up the cousins to help clean up the mess. There were eggs everywhere! Some were filled with chocolate and some with cash. New toys were scattered about and a few giant Easter baskets were up for grabs. All the cousins went straight to work; keeping what they could hold in their baskets. We finally cleaned up everything (hopefully). We thanked our cousins for helping and asked them if they could be called when the Bunny

This Easter, four generations of our family gathered by the river in Reedley. The youngest was 10 months old and the oldest was in her 80s! Of all the cousins, only two are boys! But they can’t play together because one is a baby and the other is 14!

Eggs & games galore give this Bakersfield family a fun Easter balls. I had a lot of fun with my parents, my brother, and my two sisters. Mobile clinic rolls into town Affordable spay/neuter service provided by Angel Dog Foundation
A
ngel Dogs Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing mobile spay/neuter services, education and outreach to Los Angeles and Kern has begun providing Counties spay/neuter services in Bakersfield. Lisa Tipton describes her Angel Dogs Foundation’s mission as: “Our goals are to reduce impound and euthanasia rates at L.A. County and Kern shelters, and to educate the public to assist in eradicating the companion animal overpopulation crisis. We’d like to make spay and neuter more affordPet columnist able and con-

venient for every pet owner, and to create a sustainable, self-supporting mobile spay/neuter program that will become a part of the community for many years.” Lisa began her interest in curbing the number of homeless pets through organizing the first free Bakersfield Spay/Neuter Day in 2006, describing the response from the community as “astounding.” “We were told nobody would care. We got 1,000 phone calls in a matter of hours for 100 available appointments,” she said. In response to what she sees as a tremendous need, Tipton founded her organization and searched for sponsors for a mobile clinic. Found Animals Foundation, PetSmart Charities and Coalition for Pets and Public Safety offered grants to pay to launch the program. They took to the streets — first in Lancaster, Palmdale, Littlerock and Lake Los Angeles — and are now ready to serve Bakersfield. Their 31-foot long mobile clinic, sponsored by the Coalition for Pets and Public Safety, is outfitted with the latest veterinary equipment
Fees for spaying and neutering are $110 for dogs and $90 for cats, including a free Avid microchip and a rabies vaccination. Other yearly vaccinations are available for dogs and cats for an additional $10. There are no additional charges, and each pet is given a postsurgery pain injection to keep them comfortable. Angel Dogs does accept vouchers from local organizations, further bringing down the cost of the procedure. The one thing Angel Dogs Foundation needs from the community are people filling up their appointment books. Says Tipton, “In order to stay financially viable and continue to operate, we have to fill up our appointments. Every dollar that is donated goes directly to the program and will lower the prices for everyone. The foundation will be parking their mobile clinic at the Kern County Animal Control facility, 201 S. Mt. Vernon Ave., on the first three Wednesdays of the month, if there is enough demand for the services they provide. The response to Vicky Thrasher’s interview with State Sen. Dean Florez about his proposed legislation, SB250 — The Pet Responsibility Act, was great! It’s wonderful to see such an important issue debated among caring citizens and pet owners who want the best for our animals. Here we share some of those responses, and invite more pet owners in The Bakersfield Voice community to chime in on the discussion as well. Perhaps, together, we can come up with a solution!
Politicians would do well to remember that the AR nuts don’t elect them, animal owners do, and there are a lot more of us than them. If the vast majority of animals in CA are spayed/neutered, than those that are already importing animals from third-world countries and other states will just increase their efforts. Sen. Florez’s bill is as flawed as AB1634 was. AC (animal control) is a local problem, not a state problem. There are several counties in this state that do have an AC dept. or even an officer because they have a very small human population. 90 percent of AC costs are fixed, wages, benefits, buildings, vehicles, utilities. The state’s own stats show a steady downward trend in animals taken in to shelters and euthanized WITHOUT laws such as these. Santa Cruz had worse numbers than surrounding counties WITHOUT such laws. CA taxpayers are also bearing the burden of greedy politicians who are willing to listen to the lies of the animal rights movement to line their pockets.
The main problem I have with this bill is that it punishes law-abiding pet owners. The State is in such a fiscal crises, how do they plan to enforce these laws? They do not have the money or the manpower to do so. I think the first thing we should do is educate the public on how to be a responsible pet owner. Next, we need to make the tag fees reasonable so that more people are in compliance. Finally for those who choose to have their dog spayed/neutered, have it done for free or at low cost.
