Kathy Robinson waters flowers at Robby's Nursery & Calico Gardens.

Self-proclaimed ‘plant geek’ shares gardening favorites ach and every “Plant Geek” has their own list of favorites. Although, when your family owns a nursery the list can go on and on. The other thing is, that list can change as new plants become available — or as you learn about different varieties. There are several nurseries that we buy from that are constantly introducing these different plant varieties — thus contributing to my constant search for the perfect plant. In this article, I decided to list some of my favorite plants. Some will be old standbys and others more unusual varieties. By the time I write these down, I’m sure my list could change But then, that’s the fun of plants! Plants are like earrings — you can never have too many! And just when you think you haven’t anymore room, you can always buy a pot to plant it in or hang a grouping in a tree. Garden columnist My first category are plants that can make an architectural statement — you know, plants with good form and interest. I love the Mexican Grass Palm — you can use it in the flowerbed or in a big pot. Singularly or in a group, it is a true stand out. This plant loves the heat and can take extreme cold. Two other statuesque plants are Cereus Peruvianus and the Optunia (there is one that is thornless and it is edible) — these are both large cactus with beautiful forms. The Cereus has big flowers and then produces cactus apples. Trees with some extra interest are Crape Myrtle — with the slick bark and nice form when mature — and Tristinia a small evergreen with nice form. Both are good trees to prune into multi- or low-branching trees that don’t grow too big. Crape Myrtles have a lot of new fun flower colors as well as a nice fall leaf color. The Tristinia is dark green with a small yellow bloom that comes out in the spring. I love Salvia clevelandii for its fragrance — both leaves and flowers have a wonderful clean

smell. This drought tolerant California native is the most fragrant of all the sages. There are several varieties to chose from — the main difference being size. Another nice fragrant flower is Sweet Olive. The Sweet Olive should be planted in the shade. Arctotis Pink Sugar has a beautiful gray foliage with a bright orange and pink daisy flower — quite a striking show of color and lots of bloom. Speaking of lots of bloom, what blooms more than geraniums? The new hybrid geraniums give you “tons” of blooms and then add brightly variegated leaves for even more color. Gerbera Daisies are another of my favorites. Bright hot colors can bloom off and on throughout the year — and it can be used as a cut flower, too. Scabiosa is another good cut flower and blooms in the spring and summer. The Scrabiosa comes in a nice blue, pink or white. This one can get mildew, so spray a fungicide as needed. Try Geralton Wax Flower for a large hardy shrub with a long lasting cut flower — maybe the longest lasting cut flower. Add alstromeria to this group of plants and you will have a truly professional florist bouquet. My last category are “weird plants.” I love succulents and sedum is one of my favorites. Sedums come in so many shapes and colors I don’t even know why they are in the same family. They are usually very hardy and can take the cold, where many other succulents have to be protected in Bakersfield. Then there are the Euphorbias. They are related to Poinsettia but must be a distant cousin because you would never know they are related. They have many different colors of leaves and variegation's, not to mention the strange little bloom clusters. You will just have to come by and check these two out — there’s just too many varieties to describe. Next time you think there is nothing new to plant, swing by our new location and check out some of these varieties — and with my curiosity about plants you might just find something new and different. If you just want to “talk plants” come on by. We have several “Plant Geeks” waiting to serve you! Kathy Robinson is the owner of Robby's Nursery & Calico Gardens.
