YOUR GARDEN
Spring has sprung — get out there and enjoy the glorious weather
I
t seems slow in coming but spring has sprung! I, for one, couldn’t be happier. I am so ready to get out in my yard — not to mention start ordering in my favorites at the nursery. Yes, Robby’s is still going strong and we have been experiencing quite a busy season. The road work has made the trek to us a little challenged in some instances but, thanks to our loyal customers, this year looks to be a good one! Our pending move will probably happen this summer. The County has generously let us stay thru spring and move at a “slower” time. Our new location will be on our “new street” — Terracotta Ct. The new location is just south of our current location and will have a “ranch feel.” We will have areas throughout the nursery with many themes and different styles. We are hoping to inspire you to be creative and have fun with your garden. That being said, we are actually always trying to inspire you — even at our current location. This spring we have gotten in some fun new plant varieties. We try and find the newest as
well as tried and true varieties to introduce to our customers. We also have some great “garden art pieces” to ”spruce up” your surroundings. Come by and visit our oasis! Now let’s get to work! It’s time to prune the azaleas. Right after bloom is the time to give your azaleas their Gardening columnist first shearing. The second pruning should be mid July. I usually put a reminder on my calendar for July 4, that way, I’ll get it down in time! In fact, prune all early spring bloomers on a similar schedule. Lilacs, forsythia, Chi-

nese magnolias, spirea, Banks’ roses, & camellias all will require pruning after they bloom. Just remember if you prune after mid July, you run the risk of pruning off next year’s flowers. Snails and slugs are out in force. Cory’s bug bait is the most effective to kill these little trouble makers but if you have pets use Sluggo — the one that has the “Pet Safe” label! Never put snail bait, of any kind, out on open ground. Throw it back underneath the plants — after all, that’s where they live. I think its finally okay to put in summer veggies — this year the weather has been a little slow coming around. I’ll be ordering in fresh veggies each week. Don’t be disappointed if the first “go round” wasn’t successful. Try again, there is still lots of time. And there is nothing like fresh home grown fruit and veggies. Like I said, spring is here and it’s time to get out there and enjoy the glorious weather. At Robby’s we would like to inspire you to create your own “oasis.” Come get inspired! We are here waiting for you —with lots of spring bloom!

he Bakersfield Vision 2020 Image Committee, a group of local professionals charged with measurably improving the image of Greater Bakersfield, has kicked-off their Who Knew campaign. The goal of the new campaign is to instill a sense of pride in Bakersfield citizens, making them a positive voice for the community. The campaign begins with the posting of quirky and positive Bakersfield facts shared on their Facebook page, Who Knew Bakersfield. Each week, the page will be updated with entertaining and oddball facts about the city. The committee hopes that locals will enjoy reading the unusual facts about Bakersfield, and will share those facts with friends and family. “We want conversation starters. iffany Rodriguez, a sophomore mechanical engineering major and a resident of Bakersfield, was selected as one of only 40 mentors as part of the Peer Jacks mentoring program for Northern Arizona University for the fall 2011 semester."Many of our mentors are out-ofstate students themselves who know firsthand the challenges faced by their peers," says program coordinator Kelley Horn. “Many mentors maintain friendships they make with the incoming students throughout the year.” Students are paired with a peer mentor within the first week of school and are mentored throughout their freshman year. Mentors and mentees meet in person bi-weekly and stay connected at other times through social media platforms, text messaging, and e-mail. Peer Jacks mentors are certified through the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and receive additional training and support from staff as needed. The Peer Jacks program strives to build a community, to facilitate the development of a support network for first year, out-of-state students, to ease their transition to the university, and develop a sense of self-direction by promoting learning beyond the classroom. Students are empowered to achieve autonomy while completing their degree. More information is available at nau.edu/peer More information is online at: nau.edu.

COURTESY OF CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD n the ever-evolving world of media, ethics is a topic that requires constant consideration. For that reason, the Kegley Institute of Ethics at CSUB and Kern Press Club are hosting their second annual journalism ethics panel — this time to discuss issues of privacy in the information age. “Public or Private Information? Right to Know vs. Right to Privacy” will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 11, in the Albertson Room adjacent to the Doré Theatre at CSUB. Admission is free, as is parking in Lots B, C and D after 6:30 p.m. The panel features Lois Henry, columnist for The Bakersfield Californian; Christopher Meyers, director of the Kegley Institute of Ethics; Francis Moore, chief deputy with the Kern County Sheriff’s Depart-

In a time when Wikileaks grays the area between journalism and Lois Henry espionage, and technology allows for mass dissemination of information, the ethical tensions between security and the public’s right to know are growing. “We’ll discuss why privacy is a value, how access to and dissemination of vital information is the moral core of journalism, and why the public’s right to know is not absolute,” Meyers said. few of the interesting topics everyone will learn about if they ‘Like’ our Facebook page,” said David Gordon, assistant director of the Bakersfield Museum of Art and member of the Vision 2020 Image Committee. The group plans to grow the campaign to include locally-themed events and contests for citizens with the most Bakersfield pride. Past Vision 2020 Image Committee efforts include Houchin Blood Bank’s Community-Wide Blood Drive, donations for which have reached record highs; historic trolley tours of downtown Bakersfield, which are on hiatus but set to resume with a new trolley soon; and permanent “Welcome to Bakersfield” signs at the North and South city limits. re you thinking about homeschooling your children, but don’t know what to do or how to get started? Do you worry about legalites, curriculum, socialization and support groups? Do you want to homeschool — but you are afraid to try? Then join me at our Thinking About Homeschooling meetings. Thinking About Homeschooling is a Christian ministry that provides information and support to families who are thinking about/getting started homeschooling. We want to help you get off to a great start! Meetings are held May-September, once a month — but help and support is available year round. This year we will cover the follow-
ing topics: Making the decision to homeschool, legalities and record keeping, choosing and using curriculum, teaching homepreschool and kindergarten, and more. You will be introduced to the local Christian homeschool support groups; learn about legalities; discover curriculum methods and choices, learn how to schedule your day, etc. Our first meeting is Tuesday, May 10, and the topic will be: “Making the decision to homeschool.” For more information, including location and times, contact Susan at 827-0540, or via email at: mentormom@bak.rr.com .
