‘Free from Falls’ workshop scheduled

Domino’s Pizza CEO to speak at CSUB BY IRMA CERVANTES Community contributor

alking, balance and coordination problems are common symptoms for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). These limitations in mobility can lead to injuries, and can have a negative impact on quality of life. To help out, the National MS Society, Southern California & Nevada Chapter designed the “Free from Falls” program, which will be offered at Pair & Marotta Physical Therapy’s sports facility at 5337 Truxtun Ave. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 17. “Free from Falls” is designed to help improve confidence, safety and mobility, and reduce the risk of falls by providing a supportive group atmosphere and expert instruction. Aaron Gillies, who has been a physical therapist with Pair & Marotta since 2006 and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist, will instruct the program. He will: • lead a discussion focused on awareness of issues related to falls; • teach participants exercises to improve postural alignment, balance, endurance, and mobility; and, • talk about what to do if a fall happens. The curriculum is designed for people living with MS who are able to walk (alone or with a cane, crutch, or walker), but who may be at risk for falling. There is a $10 registration fee for the program, which will include exercise handouts and a light lunch. For more information or to sign up, please call Christine Grontkowski, community development manager for the National MS Society, at 321-9512 ext. 66401 or email christine.grontkowski@nmss.org.

Ron Hutchinson leads a monthly self help group for MS sufferers.

Join other MS sufferers for fun self help group meetings BY CHRISTINE GRONTKOWSKI Community contributor

R

on Hutchinson has been leading the local MS Society’s breakfast and lunch bunch self help groups that meet in Bakersfield for just over a year, but he’s already a familiar face to many. He’s been attending the meetings regularly for about seven years. “I just really enjoy everyone in the group and their support of each other. It’s a nice association,” Hutchinson

About Multiple Sclerosis Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms range from numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be

predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20

said. The lunch group meets the second Wednesday of each month at noon and the breakfast group meets the fourth Wednesday of each month at 9:30 a.m. Both meetings are held in the private room inside Lorene’s Ranch House & Coffee Shop at 6401 Ming Ave. For information, call Hutchinson at 833-0388 or visit nationalMSsociety.org/cal to find self help groups in your area. and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million worldwide.

alifornia State University, Bakersfield is proud to announce that J. Patrick Doyle, president and CEO of Domino's Pizza, will be the second speaker in the CSUB Distinguished Speaker Series. The event will take place 6 p.m., May 14 in the CSUB Amphitheatre. “The purpose of the CSU Bakersfield Distinguished Speaker Series is to bring to the university and community distinguished individuals from around the world whose achievements have had national and/or international significance,” said Dr. Horace Mitchell, president of CSUB. Doyle follows Elon Musk, CEO and chief designer of Space X and CEO & chief architect of Tesla Motors, who came to campus as the inaugural speaker in the series in November. Credited with driving the turnaround of the company's domestic brand image, Doyle became CEO of Domino's in 2010, and has been with the company for 13 years. He has served in past as president of Domino's USA, executive vice president of Team USA

corporate stores - and executive vice president of Domino's Pizza International for six years, where he was responsible for leading the strong acceleration of this Domino's growth engine. Prior to joining Domino's, Doyle was vice president and general manager for Gerber Products Company's U.S. baby food business, strengthening its core business, as well as launching its Tender Harvest organic line. The CSU Bakersfield Distinguished Speaker Series Advisory Committee is composed of campus and community members, along with Congressman Kevin McCarthy serving as an honorary chair. As a CSUB alumnus ('89, '94), McCarthy continues to support his alma mater and community by collaborating with partners of the university to enhance its programs through initiatives such as the Distinguished Speaker Series. The CSU Bakersfield Distinguished Speaker Series is free and open to the public, but reservations are required. Please email rsvp@csub.edu or call 6542136. Bilingual hospice volunteers needed BY RHONDA FRANKHOUSER Community contributor

O

ptimal Hospice Care has several volunteer opportunities available to compassionate individuals willing to donate a little time, support and friendship to hospice patients and their caregivers. We are seeking assistance in and around the Bakersfield area for many of our programs, most specifically, in the Lamont, Arvin, Taft/Maricopa, Shafter, Delano, Wasco, and the Kern Valley communities. In addition to the on-

going need for more home and facility visitors, we are in need of bilingual speakers, notary publics, hairstylists, musicians/singers, and pet therapy teams as well veterans who are willing to offer support for other veterans nearing the end of life. Orientation training and volunteer support systems are provided free of charge. If you are interested in learning more about our programs, please email rfrankhouser@optimalcares.com or call the volunteer department at 7164000.

That means millions of people are not getting the nutrition they need! How can you help? All you have to do is visit gotmilk.com. Starting now until the

end of the year, you will be able to buy much needed milk and donate it to a family who doesn’t have regular access to it. By entering your zip code, you can ensure the donation stays in your community. Funds will be converted into vouchers that will be delivered to our Food Bank and into the hands of families. The vouchers can be redeemed at local grocery stores. Also, from April 14 through May 25, America's Milk Companies will match your donation's gallon-for-gallon! With a small donation, you can help get fresh, nutritious milk to hungry families in our community.
