CSUB experiences a plethora of changes to its athletic department
“W
hole lotta shakin’ goin’ on!” Think Jerry Lee Lewis has it right. Wait. Maybe it’s something else. “Shake, shake, shake. Shake, shake, shake. Shake your ... athletic department up!” Well, that’s not exactly how K.C. and The Sunshine Band worded it. But either ditty does sum up the recent turn of events happening over at Cal State Bakersfield where a plethora of “ch-ch-ch-ch-changes” (David Bowie didn’t want to be slighted) have cropped up. As previously mentioned in this column, longtime athletic director Rudy Carvajal retired and was replaced by new A.D. Jeff Konya and head basketball coach Keith Brown was let go. Additionally, head volleyball coach John Price was dismissed, women’s head soccer coach
Nicole Van Dyke headed for greener pastures as an assistant up on “The Farm” at Stanford and Greg McCall was just announced as the new head coach of the women’s basketball program as Tim La Kose has taken over as head honcho at San Jose State. Whew! Rather dizzying times these days at Sports columnist CSUB. Mr. Konya hasn’t even had time to settle in for goodness sakes. The
MICHAEL ELLIOTT
feeling here is that he has performed admirably in handling all of these situations and the community looks forward with great anticipation regarding the affected programs. Hey, Jeff. Speaking of these shake-ups, put on a little AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” to rock you to sleep at night. It’s a stress reliever. No, really. Yeah, and I’ll bet you’re thinkin’ “Dream On” dude. The Aerosmith defense. SAY WHAT? As of press time and nearly 30 games into the Major League Baseball season the perennially terrible Cleveland Indians are whooping it up carrying around baseball’s best record. What a refreshing occurrence. This franchise of futility has won 13th straight at home and lead the American League Central Division by 4.5 games. And I think they have a
YOUR PHOTOS
shot at the division crown if they continue their solid play as the season progresses. The competition in the Central looks to be off this year, so far, as Kansas City, Detroit, the ChiSox and Minnesota are meddling in mediocrity or worse. I know it’s wa-a-ay early to predict, but why not. Only bummer about their fantastic start is that they are drawing about 12,000 fans per game at home on weekends and 8,000 on weekdays. The city of Cleveland has always had a perceived identity problem and here is a chance for the faithful to rally around a positive entity. Go Cleve. It’s playoff time in the National Basketball Association, National Hockey League and in the East Coast Hockey League. Great times for fans of those sports and it just does not get any better than a seventh game of a seven-game series. And though
personally I’m a much bigger fan of basketball, a seventh and deciding game in hockey is pure joy, exasperation, excitement and drama all rolled into one. Now I’ve come to the main point of this subject: Sudden-death overtime in hockey. It’s chilling! It’s thrilling! It’s nerve-wracking! It’s ruthless! Utter disappointment for the loser and out-of-body exhilaration for the victor. The playoff beards live to see another series for the winners and the defeated lather up for the straight razor. Playoff overtime hockey. Sweet. Observation: From the neck up, New York Yankees first baseman and commoner Mark Teixeira is the spittin’ image of recently-wed Prince William. Did you know that there was a wedding?

nline communities empower people to reconnect with longlost friends — and Tammie Greenberg uses Facebook to interact with individuals she has not seen for decades. Greenberg, 52, also employs this forum to spread awareness of ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the neurodegenerative disease she was diagnosed with in April 2010. Greenberg works with The ALS Association’s Golden West Chapter in informing the public about ALS, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. For her efforts in educating others about the disease, the chapter recognizes Greenberg and is honoring her and her community of friends and caregivers, including employer Aera Energy LLC's corporate nurse Kathy Daniel R.N., her best friend Ellie Tortora of Phoenix, Ariz. who also lives with ALS, and her co-workers, neighbors and online friends, for exemplifying the spirit of “ALS Across America” during May, which is ALS Awareness Month. The “ALS Across America” national campaign honors people fighting ALS and their caregivers as role models. These individuals inspire The Association and the ALS community as they make a positive difference by spreading awareness about ALS and by living their lives to the fullest. People with ALS typically have a survival rate of two to five years from the time of their diagnoses. Greenberg, an executive assistant for Aera Energy LLC, an oil and gas firm, chronicles her experiences with Lou Gehrig’s Disease on her Facebook page. “Facebook has really played a huge role in my support system,” Greenberg says. “Friends I haven’t seen for 30 years are with me now. I can’t stress the importance of this enough — especially now that I am losing my ability to speak.” Through this social networking site, Greenberg enumerates a list of questions and answers regarding ALS’s impact on her life and details how she has gone from wearing high heels daily to utilizing a four-wheel walker for mobility during the past four years. “Just because I’m in a wheelchair at times, I’m still the fashionista I always was,” she says. Although ALS has affected her ability to walk and speak, it has not diminished her zest for life. “I may not be able to walk, but I can fly” she says. “I have flown more since my diagnosis than ever before. The highlight of my life was flying upside down in an open cockpit 1941 Stearman, over the Pacific Ocean, and I didn't throw up. I choose to live by this motto from my personal hero, Randy Pausch of ‘The Last Lecture’ fame — “We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand.'” Greenberg plans to participate in the chapter’s annual Walk to Defeat ALS® in May in San Bernardino and the Walk in October in Bakersfield with her new power wheelchair. She is an active participant in the chapter’s patient support group that she attends monthly in her hometown. At these meetings, Greenberg interacts with others in Kern County living with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and

Tammie Greenberg poses with Tom Harlan, her boss at Aera Energy LLC, in this 2009 photo. she shares how she deals with the myriad challenges of having ALS with other attendees. Greenberg relies on the chapter for the services of a Regional Care Manager Kristin Kyle, a licensed clinical social worker, and credits it with educating her about the services available to her in the fight against ALS. In addition, her generous spirit has impressed those who work with her at the chapter. “Tammie is an amazing person. She willingly educates people about ALS and freely offers her assistance to others battling the disease,” says Kristin Kyle. In one of her online Facebook posts, Greenberg mentions the following to her friends, “If anyone out there knows someone struggling with neuromuscular disease, and if that person could use a friend, then it’s okay for them to contact me. No one should go this journey alone. I’m always on Facebook.” The ALS Association and its nationwide network of chapters will reach out to communities across the country during ALS Awareness Month to educate the public about Lou Gehrig’s Disease and urge people to join the fight to make ALS a disease of the past. As part of ALS Awareness Month, The ALS Association hosted the National ALS Advocacy Day and Public Policy Conference in Washington, D.C. May 810. The conference is the single largest gathering of the ALS community and empowers people with ALS and their families with the ability to play an active role in advocating for a treatment and cure. This outreach to Members of Congress has helped to achieve many significant victories for people with ALS from waiving the 24-month Medicare waiting period for people with ALS to improving benefits for military veterans with the disease, who are twice as likely to develop ALS as the general public. The conference also helped lead to the establishment of a Nationwide ALS Registry and has more than quadrupled annual government funding for ALS research. The Association encourages people with ALS to enroll in the National Registry; visit http://www.alsa.org/alscare/als-registry to find out how. During ALS Awareness Month, Greenberg will continue to inform others across the United States about Lou Gehrig's Disease on her Facebook page. The ALS Association is the only national non-profit organization fighting Lou Gehrig’s Disease on every front. By leading the way in global research, providing assistance for people with ALS through a nationwide network of chapters, coordinating multidisciplinary care through certified clinical care centers, and fostering government partnerships, The Association builds hope and enhances quality of life while aggressively searching for new treatments and a cure.
