First Book fundraiser will be held Saturday, May 30, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Russo’s Books at The Marketplace, 9000 Ming Ave. First Book is devoted to providing low-income children and their families with their first books. How can you help? Russo’s Books will donate 10 percent of the day’s book sales to the First Book Bakersfield’s Advisory Board, a local nonprofit organization working with existing community-based tutoring, mentoring, and family literacy programs to provide ongoing book distribution to children. The event will feature celebrity readers throughout the day, along with preschool and elementary school-age
storytime. The volunteer advisory board was formed in January 2001 to act as a liaison between the community, local educational programs and the national First Book non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. Since then, First Book Bakersfield has placed more than 4,000 books in the hands of more than 250 children annually. The children supported by First Book are hardest to reach and are found in literacy programs based in libraries, housing projects, school–based programs and other initiatives. Pre-school through second-grade teachers apply for grants in August of each year, with books distributed to children each month from October through March. He currently plays baseball and he is all over. He plays everything from pitcher, to shortstop, to outfielder. He tries his hardest in everything he does. He gets very good grades and is on the honor roll. Before baseball season, he played soccer. He is a great defender as well as goalie. In school, he is always enrolled in whatever intramurals that they have going on. He is practically a fish — considering he's always in the water when it comes to pools. He is a very athletic young man and I am so proud of him.

Jr. high students venture New England states BY PEGGY DEWANE-POPE Community contributor
A
couple dozen junior high students for a week crammed into busses, planes, and hotels could sound like a nightmare for some, but after touring Boston and New York with them, I’m hooked. Students from Warren, Stonecreek, and Actis junior high schools ventured through the New England states during spring break taking in Revolutionary War sites, Ground Zero, the United Nations, and Wall Street, bringing to life all the history curriculum and daily news. Students, teachers, parents and a librarian ate up the sights and sounds with the enthusiasm of a hungry teen at an all-you-can-eat buffet! Our tour guide seemed determined that we get a taste of the East Coast in a matter of days, making certain we saw Paul Revere’s home, the Old North Church, Lexington, and Concord and The Old Manse House where American novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne once
lived. The battle of Bunker Hill, the Salem Witch Trials, and some of the many Boston colleges joined the mustsee list. Now my 16-year-old can say she “went” to Harvard, as did her parents (both of whom graduated from Cal Poly, truth be told!). New York took a couple hours to get to — a trip traversing Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut as well as a chunk of New York. Is that possible, we thought, when pondering the trip from San Diego to the Oregon border at an astounding 14 hours of driving — all in California? This East Coast business is compact! Good, clean fun at the self-serve dog wash
I
t was time. Actually, it was far, far past time. My shoulder affliction which began earlier in the year has successfully kept Darby from seeing the inside of a bathtub for a while now, but if we waited much longer he might start to draw flies. Not that Darby appeared altogether opposed to that option. The mere smell of the shampoo, as I the pull the bottle out of the bathroom cabinet, is enough to make him run for the furthest corner of the house and cower, as if this will be the magic time that I won’t notice his 35 pounds of stinky furriness. It’s always the same thing, and neither of us enjoys it. Not to mention that when one bathes an unwilling dog, not only do you have to clean their funky little body, afterwards you end up cleaning the entire bathroom. Maybe not you — you may have one of those “special” dogs I’ve heard of, the ones who don’t shake shampoo and hair halfway up the walls
of the bathroom. Me? I’m not that lucky. But this time would be different. We were headed to the Self Serve Pet Spa, a dog wash located in the northwest, just behind the Promenade at 2816 Calloway Drive, where you bring your pooch and they supply everything you need for bath-time fun; the tub, shampoo, conditioner, ear cleaner, eye drops, after-bath perfume, breath spray, towels and a professional-capacity dryer. The sprayer quickly got him wet, all the way down to his skin, which can be tough to do with longer-haired breeds. Having both hands free to work made shampooing him a breeze. My usual grunts and less-than-family-friendly utterances were replaced by soothing words about how good he was being, and how lovely he was going to look. The woman in the stall next to mine and I started joking that this was not what our dogs expected when they saw the leash that morning. We began to have fun. The combination of the posturefriendly bathtub, the surge of water from the sprayer, and having two free hands meant Darby set a new time record for finishing his bath. Rather than sigh as he shook out his fur, I could
sit back and laugh, even urge him on. My clothes were protected by the plastic apron Self Serve Pet Spa provided, and I didn’t have to calculate how many more towels I was going to need to clean the walls. As for Darby? He was … happy. At least as happy as I’ve ever seen him on the inside of a bathtub. The professional dryer worked its magic as well, getting his coat drier than I ever did at home. We skipped the perfume and breath spray, since I figure those items are more for my benefit than his, and out of the building we went, Darby’s tail flying high and my spirits considerably lifted by having a travel-worthy dog.
