So yummy you’ll want to lick the bowl!

S

ummer is almost here, and it's time to get ready for all the lovely little gems of summer. Soon it will be time to grub on fresh tomato and basil bruschetta, sauteed squash, and grilled corn on the cob. My little garden is in full bloom and is just teasing me with the promise of robbing them of their goodies. All except my strawberries — they are kind of the busy bees of my garden right now. I have strawberries galore from my little strawberry patch in the backyard. So much so that I am forced to get creative — which in this case has resulted in the most perfect, easy, fast dessert/snack imaginable! Ok, this may sound weird for some who have never thought of pairing sweet with sour, but I made balsamic syrup and drizzled it over ripe, sliced strawberries. It’s a party in your mouth! But really, it’s a slightly tangy, almost citrusy syrup that compli-

ments strawberries so very well. Here’s what you do for the syrup: Sliced Strawberries & Sweet Balsamic Syrup 2 cups sliced strawberries 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar (use the cheap stuff!) CANDICE 1/4 cup sugar Add ingredients to a ROGERS small pan on high heat. Columnist Bring to boil. Boil and stir for three minutes — your liquid should start looking syrupy and should coat the back of your spoon. If it doesn’t, boil for a little longer. Let cool, then drizzle over sliced strawberries. Enjoy! Ridiculously easy, and so good!

Candice Rogers aka “The Old Lady At Heart” works in the agriculture industry as an Entomology Research Coordinator and in her off hours she devotes time to preserving the past and adding her own personal flare to traditional arts once attributed to a more simple generation. She enjoys blogging and showing others how fun these traditional arts can be. Her goal is to encourage others to slow down and get back to the basics — while learning from her own mistakes and laughing with her along the way. Do YOU have a special recipe you enjoy making with friends and family? We’d love to try your recipes — and see photos of you and your favorite cooks stirring, chopping, dicing and baking. t 5 a.m. Friday morning on April 8, I wake up to feed my dogs and get on the rode to compete with my dogs, 3-yearold Border Collie Joe — and two Kelpies, 5-year-old Spooky and 9year-old Deerwoods Sheila. We have already missed one trial of the three trial series. Being one trial behind I know I have to be better then everyone else because everyone is one score ahead of me. But I really just want to have fun with my dogs — and just keep them safe. When putting a little 35-pound dog up against four 500-pound cattle, the main thing is to keep my dogs safe while putting the cattle where they should be on the course. Everything just seemed to fall together that day. Sheila won her cattle and my

dog won his sheep classes. Jump to May 6. It’s time to do it again. We load up and head out to Task Farms in Leona Valley, Calif., where Sheila wins her cattle class and her sheep class. Joe wins his sheep class — earning his L1 sheep title. Sheila also wins High Scoring Dog on Cattle and High Scoring Dog on Sheep, bringing home the Belt Buckle for the three trial series in the Cattle and The Combined Sheep & Cattle category. You really just have to love a dog that gives you everything they have when you really need it. I would like to thank Terry Kenny for putting on this series, Ken Dugon from judging the trial, and my dogs Sheila and Joe. ‘Temptation:’ An adventurous tale, painless way to learn some history BY KATHERINE ROSS Community contributor

T

ake a virtual vacation to Merry Olde England, in the romantic days of the 19th-century, hobnob with spies, and meet a dashing hero or two. It’s a painless way to pick up some history, along with an adventurous tale which alternates between the present day and the past. Lauren Willig’s The Temptation of the Night Jasmine is actually the fifth book in her recent Pink Carnation series, PHOTO PROVIDED which takes off from the legendary Katherine Ross French-Revolution-era spy, the Scarlet Pimpernel, and creates an even richer tapestry of heroic espionage. Best of all, in Willig’s books there are both male and female spies, and in a variety of locations. Of course, Willig’s spies also use flower pseudonyms. The Temptation of the Night Jasmine adds new characters to the world of the Pink Carnation, but it’s not necessary to have read the earlier books to enjoy her later additions to the series. In this book,

Robert the Duke of Dovedale returns to England from India. Not only is he coming back to his grand country estate, but he also has a secret agenda: he is pursuing a murderer who might also be selling secrets to the French. Robert’s mission is complicated by the beautiful Lady Charlotte Lansdowne, who quickly becomes involved with him and his secret mission, in spite of all his best efforts to keep her out of danger. At the same time, this historical romance is framed by the present-day exploits of the hapless Eloise, who finds love while pursuing graduate research on “Aristocratic Espionage during the Wars with France.” The English manor at which she finds valuable letters and diaries (chronicling the adventures of Robert and Charlotte, among others), most delightfully comes complete with a dashing English hero — Colin Selwick, her host. American Eloise clashes whimsically with British culture, in between bouts of poring over old papers and discreetly trying to learn more about Colin. Eloise’s minor escapades are far surpassed by those of her 19thcentury counterpart, the chronically-underestimated Charlotte. There can be little doubt that good will triumph, with the honors equally divided between the hero and heroine. Flower power has just joined the book world! Katherine Ross is a librarian at the Beale Memorial Library, which provides many great reads, to suit all readers.

Have YOU read a good book lately that YOU'D like to recommend to our Voice readers? We’d love to hear your recommendations. Post your book reviews at: www.bakersfieldvoice.com.

Sheila, a 9-year-old Kelpie, wins high marks at a recent herding competition.
