Strong is the new skinny
B
elieve it or not, skinny is not a compliment. Most folks don’t have ill intentions when they say that to someone. Years ago, it was unheard of for a female to lift weights. They thought it would make them big and bulky. According to research out of Tufts University, the greater your muscle mass, the greater your longevity potential. Why? One reason is that the more muscle you carry, the more insulin receptor sites you have, and the more sensitive they are. Increased muscle prevents diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Translation: the more muscle you have, the easier it is to have low body fat. And more good news: the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn at rest because for every pound of muscle you put on, you burn an extra 50 calories per day. That can add up! One more note on muscle. Take for example a female weighing in at 132 pounds, with 20 percent body fat. She has about 25 pounds of fat. So if she

gains about eight pounds of muscle mass and loses eight pounds of fat at the same time in 10 weeks, her body fat will be 13 percent at the end of the 10 weeks. Her body will look and feel tremendously better. Gina Rolow, owner of Body By Gina, is a personal trainer. Body By Gina has a new location, at 4000 Fruitvale Ave., Suite 10. Mental struggle leads to learning BY STACEY GRAHAM Community contributor
O
ne of the most difficult aspects of teaching is dealing with the student who has given up. A lack of motivation is a deal killer when it comes to work completion and quality of work. Recently, my sister suggested I read an article on a comparison between Western and Eastern attitudes about education. In a nutshell, Western parents praise and reinforce natural ability with comments like: “Wow! Great job! You’re so smart!” Eastern cultures encourage the struggle with comments like: “Keep working.” As I gazed at my students recently — who are roughly two years behind in reading — I realized many stop before the struggle. I called on one to find out his analysis of an argument. He looked at what he wrote, choked out the brief response and stopped. I asked him to consider the evidence. He toiled. I looked at the rest of the class and asked them if it looked like he was struggling. I heard a resound-
ing, “Yes!” Then I publically celebrated (I do that). I told them that the struggle is where the learning takes place — that’s when the brain is fully engaged. Slowly they’re going to appreciate the struggle, which historically they’ve avoided (and shut down) resulting in gaps in their knowledge. I consider times in my life when I’ve struggled, and I find that both academically and emotionally, I learned so Education columnist much at those times. Keep struggling!
