Paw Print City: Pet holiday overload

T

his weekend, I finally got under way a project I’ve been thinking about for quite some time. I’m putting together what I hope to someday be a comprehensive calendar of all things pet-related in the Kern County area. The calendar will eventually include information on meetings for all the committees and groups in the area, adoption dates and places, animal-cause fundraisers, classes for fun things to do with your pets, spay/neuter events, etc. The idea is that any pet lover who wants to adopt/donate/get involved can get all necessary Pet columnist information at

VICKY THRASHER

one place. The tough part about starting a project like this is actually starting it. In my pursuit of having something on the calendar before reaching out to the community groups I am aware of, I did a little digging on the Internet to find dates for pet-related observances. You know the items I’m talking about. Spay Day USA (Feb. 20) is an annual recognized date, bringing awareness to the importance of spaying and neutering. Take Your Dog to Work Day (June 26) is another observance created specifically for the dog loving community. But Love Your Pet Day? Someone came up with the idea that we needed a special day, in this case Feb. 20, to commemorate loving our pets? How about International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day, recognized on Feb. 23? I at least understand the logic of some crafty dog food manufacturer deciding they needed their own day to recognize the virtues of dog food and the army of treats that came behind its

invention, even if I never intend to plan a potluck around it. My personal favorite, in terms of utterly useless critter-related dates, is What if Dogs and Cats Had Opposable Thumbs Day, celebrated on March 3. After a bit of investigation, it appears this holiday was created for no other purpose than to sell electronic greeting cards. Well Cat, the “creators” of this day, have even copyrighted it, so no making your big WIDACHOT Day commemorative T-Shirts without talking to them first. The next time your sweetie tries to get out of celebrating a day you find special by using the “it’s just a holiday created by the greeting card and florist industries to get me to spend money” excuse, just show them a few of these dates and ask them what they plan to get you for International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day. Have a pet-related question or comment? E-mail Vicky at: vicky@pawprintcity.com or visit: www.pawprintcitytimes.com.
