‘Viking’ boosters send fond farwell to outstanding band member COURTESY OF THE WEST HIGH SCHOOL BAND BOOSTERS arewell to Jesse Salas, a West High Viking Regiment Band member heading up to the University of California, Berkeley after graduating from West High on May 30. Jesse started playing the saxophone in fifth grade at Sandrini Elementary continuing on to Actis Junior High and then to West High to play in the West High Viking Regiment for four years. The list of Jesse’s involvement in high school is impressive: National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Math Honor Society, National French Honor Society, French Club, AB Club, Science Bowl, Roots and Chutes, Math Club, Video Club, Mock Trial, Academic Decathlon, Physics Olympics, Link Crew, cross country, track, pep band, jazz band, honor jazz band … the Regiment; playing numerous solos

throughout the year. Jesse can also rap as preformed at the last band competition dinner of the year — and he’s an outstanding graduation speaker. His outside school commitment is being a member of the Captain Crunch and the Cereal Killer Band — a group of former and present West High Students. The group took second place at Jerry’s Pizza in the Battle of the Bands contest earlier this year. Jesse is also awaiting notification about his Guinness Book of World Records playing the Flight of the Bumble Bee the fastest on a saxophone. This West High grad also logged in over 100 hours of community service. One teacher that stands out to Jesse is Mr. Steve Mettler, his band director for three years. Mr. Mettler states: “Jesse Salas has been bitten by the music bug! That is the best way to describe his drive

and work ethic for all things music related. In my experience as a musician and educator, students like Jessie are somewhat of a marvel; I am reminded about that fire I once had at a young age. He continues to impact those around him not just in music, but in his unique sense of humor and his academic achievement. From what I

He helps you with anything you need help with from altissimo to algebra. He makes you laugh and pumps you up, he is an awesome guy.” His current band director Mr. Mickey Murray said: “Whenever Jesse is seen playing with the WHS jazz band he always has a cool, tranquil composure.” But Jesse says it’s his parents who have “inspired him to excel in everything that he does.” Jesse Salas, THANK YOU for your contribution to the West High Viking Regiment.
