Heather Sexton, right, is rescued from the Kern River along with friend Alyssa Gors during a tubing trip down the river.

Stay out: River rescue leads to lessons learned BY MYRIAM VALDEZ Community contributor

O

ne recent summer, Heather Sexton almost died. Sexton, in her 20s, was enjoying her summer vacation with her friend Alyssa Gors, and a ride down the river sounded like the perfect summer activity. In the early evening, Heather arrived at the Kern River having just purchased some individual tubes. She had filled them up with air, but noticed they were a bit smaller than the tubes she previously would use to go down the river. Not dwelling on the smaller tubes or worrying about a life vest and safety helmets, Heather and Alyssa walked to the top of the river, entering under a bridge nearby a rapid. Accompanied by three other friends, the group was not particularly afraid of entering the water near such rapid waters, having ridden down the river in several instances before in the same manner.

However, on this day, the Kern River was ready to claim its next victim. The waters quickly separated the five rafters. Without the necessary safety gear and rafting floatation devices, Heather was pulled away from her friends. Nearby, Alyssa was also struggling. They crashed into a tree and took the opportunity to hold on to one of its branches. Not far, the waters rushed over dangerous rigid rocks. The only way to get out of the river was to swim across those rocks, but Heather knew to stay put. “I just kept repeating to myself, ‘Don’t move’,” said Heather. “I started wondering if anyone was going to be able to help us.” Heather didn’t let her surroundings get the best of her. “It didn’t cross my mind that this might be the end because I was determined to stay put. I was absolutely not going to risk putting myself in danger by trying anything,” she said. Please turn to RESCUE / 2

Donated iPads help keep burn patients connected COURTESY OF SAN JOAQUIN COMMUNITY HOSPITAL

he name for a new program that will bring four iPads to the Chain Cohn Stiles Intensive Care Unit, Grossman Burn Center at San Joaquin Community Hospital came about naturally. The “Keeping Survivors Connected iPad program” is meant to do just that — enable burn survivors and their loved ones to maintain connections to their family, friends, co-workers, and others while they undergo treatment. Thanks to the joint efforts of the Bakersfield Firefighters Burn Foundation and Chevrolet Limited of Bakersfield, burn survivors and their families will have full use of an iPad, and all the connections the device can

offer throughout their stay at the burn center. “As we’ve seen, if there is a child here in the burn unit, one or both of the parents are with them 24/7, as any parent would be,” said Trever Martinusen, a captain with the Bakersfield Fire Department and the executive director of the Bakersfield Firefighters Burn Foundation. “Having these iPads here allows those parents and the patients to use Skype or email, whatever they want, to stay in touch with their other children and family members.” Of course, burn patients of all ages are also free to use the iPads for entertainment, education and keeping in touch with classmates and teachers. Perhaps most importantly, the iPads can provide distraction. In fact, each of the four iPads will be equipped with waterproof cases that can withstand use in the inpatient burn unit’s hydrotherapy room. “If these iPads can be a diversion tool while a patient is undergoing treatment that could be painful, then we are happy to provide those tools,” Martinusen said. The Bakersfield Firefighters Burn Foundation partnered with Chevrolet Limited of Bakersfield — a local car club that started as a social organization but expanded into supporting several charities — for funding the Keeping Burn Survivors Connected Program. The club has teamed up with the foundation for the last 13 years. “The Bakersfield Firefighters Burn Foundation does the barbecue at our annual car show, so the support goes both ways,” said Ralph Renz, vice president of Chevrolet Limited of Bakersfield. “One of our members presented the idea of making a $2,000 donation that would provide iPads to the inpatient unit at the Grossman Burn Center at SJCH and we thought it was a great idea because with our grandkids, we see how reliant society, and especially kids, has become on technology. Hopefully, it can help make

At this point, Heather had let go of her tube. Alyssa had lost hers earlier, and all they had left was the tree branch to hold on to. With the sun setting in a couple hours, Heather knew she was running out of time and energy. “I wasn't sure if anyone would be able to see us,” she recalls. A while later, Heather noticed a group of rafters coming down the Heather Sexton river. Heather and Alyssa waved to the rafters and asked them to call search and rescue. However, Heather was disconcerted as they didn’t seem too concerned with their struggle. “They must have been regular rafters because they didn't seem surprised that we needed help,” said Heather. Fortunately for Heather and

Alyssa, help was on the way. “We saw a helicopter in the sky so we thought we were going to have to be airlifted. My friend was freaking out and I was just in shock,” said Heather. A search and rescue team pulled up on a bridge nearby, coming to the side of the tree where the girls were stranded. After cutting down a few branches that were impeding the rescue, they set up a ramp where the girls where able to climb across one at a time. “I am appreciative for the rescuers as it is a dangerous job to do. They are putting themselves at risk in order to save people they don't even know,” said Heather. In the end, both Heather and Alyssa were saved. And had it not been for their friendship, Heather doesn’t think she would have been able to stay so calm. “Having another person with me helped me through the ordeal. I was lucky enough to have someone there. Unfortunately, not everyone is that lucky,” said Heather. Heather wants others to be mindful of the dangers of the Kern

River and feels lucky to be alive. “Many people told me to stay out of the river and I didn't listen. Now I listen” she said. After her harrowing experience, Heather now has words of wisdom of her own to share with others: “Stay off the river. If you insist on going in, do it with as part of a group raft with a certified guide and under no circumstances should you ever go on an individual raft. You think you can avoid it, but you are not stronger than the river.” Taking her own advice, Heather has chosen to stay safe rather than risk losing her life again. “I have not been in the water since. I actually haven't even been to the river since. It doesn't frighten me to be near it, I just kind of decided its better for me to stay away.”
