School involvement today ensures success tomorrow
B
efore we know it, school will once again be underway and I hope the next step for so many students is to find something that interests them. I encourage my eighth-grade students to do their best every day — and achieve the highest grades to help ensure a positive future. I also encourage them to do what every college I know finds attractive: be a well-rounded person. If kids are focused heavily on academics, join a sport, a club, or student body. If they’re involved in sports, join drama, choir, or start a club. If they’re obsessed with something like anime, chess, or fencing, get involved in a group of similarly minded kids and start a club if there isn’t one. The beauty of some high schools is students can get involved in sports they’ve never played. (Unfortunately, some coaches ask things like: “What club team do you play on?” — but that’s not the case with all sports, all schools, or all coaches!) I like to tell the kids that the smartest people don’t run the world, because that’s left to the people who get involved and make things happen. Having raised three children and taught hundreds, I find the most ful-

filled are those who dabble in many things — and embrace several closely. High school graduates this year who are former students of mine list their involvement in so many activities: band— including drum line and color guard, debate, school leadership, performing arts, choir, sports, and an amazing list of volunteer experiences. As adults, I Education columnist find the most interesting people have their hands in many different projects, clubs, and experiences. The bottom line at any age is get involved! Bakersfield inventor exhibits ‘perpetual motion’ motor, others BY CHRISSA CHVERCHKO Community contributor

nventHelp’s INPEXâ, America’s Largest Invention Trade Show, announced that Sam Parlan of Bakersfield has invented the “Personal Computer Case,” the “Bike Lite” and “Perpetual Motion.” These patent-pending inventions were exhibited at INPEXâ 2012, on June 13-15, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. “Perpetual Motion” is a motor that runs on its own power forever and can create energy to power a light bulb forever, according to the inventor. Though Parlan originally thought it was impossible to invent perpetual motion,

he soon discovered how to accelerate mass to infinity. After a long time of experi-

menting, he realized that the math and physics involved is similar to the way dams work. The generators on a dam run on perpetual motion because mass (water molecules) goes up and down on their own. The small Perpetual Motion motor the inventor is building will make about 12 volts of electricity, plus or minus. When creating electricity for a large city, one would need to make several larger motors, similar to the electric wind generators of Tehachapi. According to the inventor, this can be a primary source of electricity. The inventor wants to be known as the good guy who gave the world a clean, cheap,

and new source of electricity. “Ever since I discovered Perpetual Motion, I’ve told people about it, and I’ve only gotten discredited and deprecated,” said Parlan. “I want people to know that I’m a good guy that just wants to provide the world with clean energy.” The inventor also is presenting several other inventions at INPEX® 2012. According to the inventor’s market survey, test results indicated that the “Bike Lite” will be the cheapest, brightest, and best bike lite on the market. Mass production of this Bike Lite is very inexpensive, which would allow this Bike Lite to be a very viable alternative and very competitive compared to
other bike lights already available in the market. The “Personal Computer Case” would allow a desktop computer to be portable just like a laptop. Many people who have desktop computers are unable to transport their computer to another location, but the Personal Computer Case would solve this problem. In one carrying case, an individual could pack their computer and transport it safely and easily. Made of nylon, plastic and foam, the Personal Computer Case would eliminate users having to purchase an additional laptop in order to make their computer portable.

Olympic contender receives $2,500 donation COURTESY OF SAN JOAQUIN COMMUNITY HOSPITAL lympic-bound local wrestler Jake Varner visited San Joaquin Community Hospital (SJCH) on a recent Friday morning, but not because he is ill or injured. Varner made an appearance at a press conference held at the hospital and was presented with a check from SJCH in the amount of $2,500 toward his quest for a gold medal in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London this July. “Jake is a real icon in this community,” said Bob Beehler, SJCH president/CEO. “We have a lot of confidence in him to do a great job at the Olympic Games and we’re thrilled to be able to help with that a little bit.” Varner expressed his gratitude and thanked the community for their continued support. “I really appreciate this,” said Varner, when receiving the symbolic, over-sized check. “My family has always supported me, but so does this community.” Varner’s immediate family – including his father, Steve Varner, a former wrestling coach at Bakersfield High School – was also in attendance. The hospital presented all of them with match-

t’s time to increase your sprinkler time. You may need to step up the length of time on your clock. You may also need to increase the number of days your are watering. In any case, make sure to water long — and deep — to encourage roots down for a well rooted plant. Trees and shrubs can go longer in between waterings if you have “told” them to root deeply into the soil by watering deeply. The rule of thumb is this: dig down four to six inches — if the ground is dry, then water. If the soil is nice and wet, skip a day. (Clay soil does not need water every day). For best results, go out and look — don’t just set the clock and walk away! This week’s gardening tip is from Kathy Robinson of Robby’s Nursery. Do YOU have a gardening tip you’d like to share with our readers? Post your gardening tips and photos of your garden on our web site at: www. bakersfieldvoice.com.

ing “SJCH Supports Jake Varner” sweatshirts. SJCH’s Gift Gallery will also be selling Varner’s own Olympic Tshirts for $20 each, with all proceeds going toward the wrestler’s fundraising campaign. Donations can also be made online through PayPal on Varner’s website at: jakevarner.com. Varner graduated from Bakersfield High School in 2005, and during his time as a Driller, won the California State High School Wrestling Championship title
twice. He then moved on to Iowa State with an athletic scholarship in wrestling. He concluded his final season as a Cyclone with a repeat NCAA 197-pound title. In total, Varner finished his career at Iowa State with a record of 121-10 and ended his senior year with an undefeated record of 310. On April 24, Varner clinched a spot on the U.S. freestyle team during the Olympic Trials competition held in front of record crowds in Iowa City.
